CONTEMPORARY CINEMAThe World of Goopi and Bagha( Goopy Gawaiyaa Bagha Bajaiyaa / dir: Shilpa Ranade/ Hindi/ 2013/ 79 mins.)AnimationDIRECTOR BIOShilpa Ranade teaches Animation at the Industrial Design Centre (IDC),IIT Bombay. An alumnus of IDC, she later completed her M. Phil inAnimation from the Royal College of Art, London. Shilpa Ranade hasdirected short animation films for Channel 4, UK and her films havetraveled all over the world winning accolades in some of the mostprestigious film festivals. The World of Goopy and Bagha is her firstfeature.
SYNOPSIS:Banished from their respective kingdoms for causing a disruption with theircacophonous musical “talents,” singer Goopi and the dholak-playing Baghaaccidentally meet deep in the heart of the forest. Somehow enthralled bytheir dreadful music, the king of ghosts grants them four magical boons andsends them on to new lives in the neighbouring Kingdom of Shundi. Thanksto their new gifts, Goopi and Bagha are appointed the court musicians, butare quickly caught up in a dispute between the King of Shundi and his longlostbrother. It will be up to them to use their boons (and their brains!) toprevent war between the kingdoms — and win the hands of two beautifulprincesses. The story was earlier adapted as live action feature by Satyajit Rayin 1968.The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.
