<strong>GRABOW</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>BRANDT</strong>The Grabows of this research have been traced back to themid-eighteenth century in Germany’s Federal State of Schleswig-Holstein. Germany is made up of 16 Federal States(Bundesländer) which have their own governments with their ownconstitutions. Schleswig-Holstein is known as the ―L<strong>and</strong> betweenthe two seas― <strong>and</strong> is divided into five regional districts: the North Sea coast, the Balticcoast, the interior, Holstein's Switzerl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> the Duchy of Lauenburg. The federal stateof Schleswig-Holstein is in the far north of Germany <strong>and</strong> its capital is Kiel. There are anumber of towns <strong>and</strong> municipalities that surround the immediate vacinity of Schleswig-Holstein, Kehrsen that was the location for Grabow, Br<strong>and</strong>t, <strong>and</strong> associated families.Molln, Gudow, Klein Zecher, Kogel, Horst, Hornbeck, Sophienthal, <strong>and</strong> Kehrsenare the primary towns <strong>and</strong> municipalities within <strong>and</strong> around Laurenburg (County) wherethe Grabow <strong>and</strong> Br<strong>and</strong>ts lived <strong>and</strong> died—many of these places were within 10 kilometersof Kehrsen. Agriculture, coal/iron/salt mining, <strong>and</strong> the shipping industry were theprincipal economy of means in Schleswig-Holstein. Most Grabow <strong>and</strong> other familymembers reported their occupations as Laborer in German records.The earliest Grabow ancestor of record within this documentation is JochenJohann Grabow <strong>and</strong> his wife, Anna Dorothea Grabow who were married in Germany onOctober 21, 1757. Jochen <strong>and</strong> Anna were the parents of Joachim Grabow who marriedMarie Dorothea Rosenthal (daughter of Heinrich Rosenthal), in Kehrsen, Germany, onApril 25, 1784. Thanks to the research provided by Doyle Br<strong>and</strong>t, his records fromGermany really fill in Grabow <strong>and</strong> Br<strong>and</strong>t family data beginning with Joachim <strong>and</strong> Marieson, Johann Heinrich Christian Grabow (1799-1865) <strong>and</strong> his wife, Christena SophiaCatherine Mirow—parents of our immigrant forefather, Johann Jurgen Heinrich Grabow.Johann Jurgen Heinrich Grabow (Johann, Sr.) was born July 1, 1828 in Gudow,Germany <strong>and</strong> baptized September 6, 1828 in Sophienthal. On September 4, 1853, sixmonths after the birth of their first son, Johann Jr., Johann <strong>and</strong> Marie Christina DorotheaSchrader married. Marie (Mary) was the daughter of Johann Jochen Schrader <strong>and</strong>Margareth Dorothea Reimers <strong>and</strong> had a child, Anna Catherine Maria Stolzenberg, from aprevious marriage. Johann Sr. <strong>and</strong> Mary had 3 known children prior to their 1869immigration to the United States—one child, Anna Catherine Dorothea Grabow, died in1860 shortly after her 1859 birth.Johann Grabow, Sr., his wife, Mary, <strong>and</strong> two sons Johann Jr. <strong>and</strong> Heinrich,arrived in the port of New York on March 24, 1869—they traveled on the steamshipMinnesota from Liverpool <strong>and</strong> Queenstown. It appears that Johann Sr. <strong>and</strong> Maryintended to follow Johanns childhood friend, Johann Heinrich Br<strong>and</strong>t (Henry) <strong>and</strong> hiswife, Anna Maria (daughter of Marie Schrader <strong>and</strong> step-daughter to Johann), to America.Henry <strong>and</strong> Anna Maria immigrated to the states shortly after the January 21, 1860 birth oftheir illegitimate daughter, Anne Marie Christiana Br<strong>and</strong>t in Molln, Germany.The Grabow <strong>and</strong> the Br<strong>and</strong>t families settled in the German community of SarpyCounty, Nebraska <strong>and</strong> can be seen neighboring each other by the time of the 1870 census.Family ties were even more tightly bound when Johann Jochen Hans Grabow (Johann Jr.)married his half niece <strong>and</strong> daughter of Marie Schrader Grabow, Anne Marie Br<strong>and</strong>t, onDecember 18, 1879 in Sarpy County. Earlier in the same year Johann Jr.’s brother,Heinrich, had married Anna Sophia Ehlers, daughter of Jacob <strong>and</strong> Helena Peters Ehlers.Grabow <strong>and</strong> Br<strong>and</strong>t - 4
In 1895, tragedy struck the Johann Sr. family with the untimely death of his son,Heinrich. Heinrich left behind a family of eight young children, the oldest being 15 yearsold. Heinrich’s widow, Anna, remarried Fred Hartman about five years later <strong>and</strong> theyboth remained in Sarpy County until their deaths.Within two months of his son Heinrich’s death, Johann Sr. lost his wife, Marie, ofnearly 42 years. After the 1900 census, Johann Sr. follows his son Johann, Jr. to theterritory of Oklahoma—where they settled in Kingfisher.After the turn of the century most of the Johann Grabow <strong>and</strong> Henry Br<strong>and</strong>tfamilies in America began to disperse from the area of Sarpy County, Nebraska. Somewent to New York, while others went to Oklahoma, Kansas, <strong>and</strong> elsewhere. Kingfisher County, OK transcription of an official court recordDEPOSITION OF WITNESS TAKEN IN AN ACTION PENDING IN THE COUNTY COURTWITHIN AND FOR THE COUNTY OF SARPY, IN THE STATE OF NEBRASKA, UPON THEAPPLICATION FOR THE PROBATE OF THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF MARIA<strong>BRANDT</strong>, DECEASED, IN PURCHANCE OF THE FOLLOWING AGREEMENT:It is hereby stipulated by <strong>and</strong> between the proponent <strong>and</strong> other parties interested in the applicationfor the probate of the will, by their counsel John F. The following is an extract from a Nov2005 email I received from Edward Highers that concerns Henry Grabow:It appears that my gr<strong>and</strong>father Henry Grabow <strong>and</strong> his brother John Jergen Grabow married sisters. JennieDorthea Glissman <strong>and</strong> Serena Elizabeth Martha Glissman have the same last name. There was a story about twobrothers (twins) who married two sisters (twins) in our past. Although the two brothers appear to have marriedtwo sisters they don’t appear to be twins.There is no doubt that Heinrich J.C. Grabow, Jr. disappeared in 1928. My mother was four years old at thetime. The story has haunted our family throughout her life <strong>and</strong> our upbringing. We have exhausted all leads,rumors <strong>and</strong> guesses as to his demise or whereabouts. He liked to gamble <strong>and</strong> we were told he won a lot ofmoney <strong>and</strong> some say a mortgage to a farm in a poker game at the Owl’s club in Oneida New York one evening.He was never seen again after leaving. One rumor stated that his belt buckle was found in the ashes of the Owl’sClub Furnace. Short services will be held at the German Evangelical Church tomarrow <strong>and</strong> the remainsshipped to Gretna, Nebr. For burial.Addendum: Information received from Rusty S<strong>and</strong>ers (Undertaker at the time of July 5, 1989)taken from a very old record book showed that the cause of death was old age. He was 79 years old.The price of the casket was $75.00, something else cost $8.00, the embalming $25.00, the hearse$10.00, for a total of $118.00. Mr. Bracken would have been the Undertaker at Kingfisher, OK. 29August 11, 1906- The remains of John Grabo, Sr. were shipped to Gretna, Nebr., for burial. In the year of 1879, the 18th day ofDecember, he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Br<strong>and</strong>t of Nebraska, where they lived 18? years <strong>and</strong>then moved to Oklahoma. Departed this life at the Tri-City Hospital in Oceanside,California, May 23, 1966, at the age of 28 years, 1 month, 29 days.She lived her twelve years of high school in the Longdale community with her family until she wasunited in marriage to Alva Dawayne Shaw on December 5, 1954. To this union were born two sons<strong>and</strong> one daughter: Michael Dawayne 9, Joseph Alvin 5, <strong>and</strong> Anita Ann 6.She <strong>and</strong> the three children accompanied her husb<strong>and</strong>, Sgt. Alva Dawayne Shaw while serving theUnited States Marine Corp for the past twelve years.
