Dedication
My grandpa, Harry Mitchell, was a good man. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, bowling,
horseshoes, and playing cards. He was liked by many, was easy to talk to, and got along well
with everyone he met. He enjoyed old westerns and war movies and was good at roofing and
keeping the books for his golfing and bowling leagues. His motives were not complex and his
needs were simple. He worked hard all his life and was a good provider for his family. I never
knew Grandpa in the early years when the times for family and country were harder. I only
know what has been shared with me – not all was a bed of roses, but by the time my sister,
Crystal, and I came into his home in 1971, life was stable and Grandpa‘s retirement from the
steel mill was near.
Grandpa was born March 29, 1919 in Clarion County, Rimersburg, Pennsylvania—son
of Taylor Roy and Gertrude Mohney Mitchell, and grandson of English immigrant, Wilson
Mitchell. By 1930, the Taylor Roy Mitchell household was living in Struthers, Ohio. Grandpa
quit school when he was in the 10 th grade; he began his post-school life selling apples, making a
dollar a day, and taking a fancy to his neighbor, Alma Grigsby. After courting for 4 ½ years,
Harry and Alma decided to elope to New Castle, Pennsylvania to get married on January 27,
1940. Two weeks had passed before they told their parents that they were husband and wife.
Shortly after their marriage, Grandpa began working at Youngstown Sheet and Tube as a Cutoff
Machine Operator, making 75 cents an hour. Before the year ended, Grandpa and Grandma
had their first child, my mom, Carolyn Joyce Mitchell. Shortly after the birth of their second
child, Harry Edwin (my uncle Ed), life had to be postponed because of World War II. Grandpa
enlisted in the Navy on May 22, 1944—getting his training as a Landing Craft Operator at Great
Lakes, Illinois.
Grandpa didn‘t dwell on war stories but one particular one he did tell me about was
when he was tasked to monitor the seas for submarine activity from a lifeboat off the side of the
ship. At some point he had dozed off, and was then subsequently rudely awakened by machine
gun fire from his own ship going off over his head. This is the best I recall of the particulars but
it sure made a lasting impression on my grandpa. Another harrowing experience he shared
concerned his participation in the Battle of Iwo Jima. As a Landing Craft Operator he
experienced first hand what we can only imagine—to have neighboring buddies blown out of
the water while trying to ferry marines to a hostile shore. Grandma always talked about the time
when Grandpa returned home after the war—he left with a full head of hair and came back with
none. She also talked of how my Mom heard grandpa talking to my grandma when he came
home after his January 1946 discharge from the Navy—Mom asked who that strange man was
in the house.
After 35 years, Harry E. Mitchell retired from the steel mill in 1975. Although retired,
he continued to supplement his income with roofing jobs. I assisted him on numerous occasions
by transporting the 80 pound bundle of shingles from ground to roof. Grandpa was fearless
when it came to walking around on the roofs and hammering nails along those treacherous
edges—me, I tried never to look down.
In 1977, my sister and I moved out of the home of our grandparents to live back with our
mom in Washington State. I continued to periodically return to Ohio after joining the Air Force
in 1978, visiting with my grandparents and family; golfing, fishing, and playing cards with my
grandpa. The last time I saw him was when I came home from England in February 1993 to
attend his funeral. I sure do miss my grandpa.
MITCHELL
The first Mitchell that I begin my research with is Wilson Mitchell, born 1789 in Lancashire
County, England (Coniston), he was a copper miner—mining was a prevalent occupation for our
Mitchell ancestors in England. I am still researching possible parents of Wilson in the Lancashire region.
My strongest circumstantial candidates are William and Martha Wilson who where married in
Hawkshead, Lancashire on December 14, 1773—the ―Wilson‖ namesake has it‘s likely beginning from
this union. On July 11, 1818, Wilson married Martha Atkinson, who was born 1798 in Cumberland
County, England (Ulpha). Martha was the daughter of Joseph and Frances Atkinson of Ulpha. I first
located the Wilson and Martha Mitchell family in the 1841 Church Coniston, Lancashire County,
England census, but have not found any death information on Wilson and Martha at this time. Wilson
and Martha were the parents of John Mitchell (1827 – 1899). John was born in nearby Kirkby Ireleth in
Lancashire and was the father of Wilson Mitchell (1865 – 1940), immigrant ancestor of our American
Mitchell line.
Wilson (the elder) and Martha Atkinson Mitchell remained in Cumberland after their marriage
for a number of years based on the baptism records of at least two sons, William (christened 26 February
1820), and Robert (christened 2 May 1824)—both christened in Ulpha. By the time my X3-greatgrandfather,
John Mitchell, was born in 1827, the Wilson Mitchell family was living in the region of
Kirkby Ireleth, Lancashire County, England. Sending for documentation of John‘s birth I was provided a
June 10 th 1829 baptism record from the parish of Kirkby Ireleth—―John and Wilson, sons of Wilson
Mitchel, Labourer of Beckstones and Martha‖ 1 . Another son, Thomas, was was also baptized in Kirkby
Ireleth—he was baptized February 20, 1832.
John Mitchell lived in Cleator, Cumberland County, England by the time of his November 26,
1859 marriage to Frances Kewley. Frances was the daughter of Thomas and Ann Kewley of Egremont in
Cumberland. Thomas Kewley was a copper miner in Egremont, he was born on the Isle of Man. Frances
was the only known child of Thomas and Ann—her mother Ann died in 1855 of ―general debility‖ and
Thomas died in 1893. By 1861, John and Frances were living in Egremont.
John and Frances Kewley Mitchell had three children; Ann born in 1859, Martha born in 1862,
and Wilson born in 1865. Ann (named for Frances‘s mother) married William Routledge in 1893
Egremont. Martha (named for John‘s mother 2 ) married Humphrey Nixon in 1901 Egremont. John‘s
younger brother, Abel, also lived in Cleator according to his 1854 marriage to Sarah Jenkinson. Abel
later lived in Egremont with his brother, John. At least one brother of John and Abel immigrated to the
United States—Thomas Mitchell, born in 1830, settled in the region of Clarion County by 1855. Thomas
Mitchell was recognized for distinguished service during the Civil War. Wilson Mitchell, son of John
who was christened on July 16, 1865, in the Shire of Cumberland, Egremont, England, followed his
uncle Thomas to Clarion County, PA in 1887 3 .
On October 22, 1887, Wilson Mitchell married Minnie Carnahan in Clarion County, PA. Minnie
was the daughter of Taylor and Barbara Watterson Carnahan of Clarion County. Wilson and Minnie
were the parents of nine children. In 1918, Wilson and Minnie moved to Mahoning County, Ohio
(Youngstown), where they remained until their deaths. They were transported to the Rimersburg
Cemetery in Clarion County, for burial. Their son, my great-grandfather Taylor Roy Mitchell, married
Gertrude Mohney in 1915 Clarion County, PA. Gertrude was the daughter of James and Mary Emigh
Mohney. Some time after the 1920 census, Taylor and Gertrude eventually followed Wilson and Minnie
Mitchell to Mahoning County, Ohio, where they remained until their deaths.
Special thanks to Betty Lockhart 4 of Youngstown, Ohio (great-granddaughter of Thelma
Mitchell) for her contribution to this family file. Also, many thanks to Patrick Collar, greatgrandson
of James and Lottie (Mitchell) Mohney, for his help.
Terry Davis (Carolyn Mitchell, Harry, Taylor Roy, Wilson, John, Wilson Mitchell)
1 Ceremony performed by Rev Wm Sandwith curate of Woodland.
2 The Mitchell‘s of England tended to name the oldest sons and daughters after the parents on both sides.
3 W. Mitchell arrived in the port of New York on May 11, 1887 from Liverpool, England on the S.S. Helvetia.
I believe that Robert Mitchell was the brother of Wilson Mitchell (b. 1789). William (b. 1811) is possibly the son of
Robert but not confirmed.
6
William Mitchell married Hannah Lindsay on 20 Jan 1842 in Lancashire; they had a son named Wilson Mitchell.
7
Grace Atkinson may have a connection to Martha Atkinson Mitchell – wife of Wilson (married in 1818).
14 William Wilson, future husband of Martha Mitchell. Martha daughter of Wilson and Martha Atkinson Mitchell.
15 Joseph Mitchell fits in as a son of Wilson and Martha Atkinson Mitchell but I have not yet found proof of the link.
16 Martha Atkinson Mitchell, widow of Wilson Mitchell – living with her oldest daughter, Dorothy. Dorothy died Dec
Quarter in 1876 at the age of 58 in Ulverstone District, Lancashire (death record Vol 8e page 500).
17 This William Mitchell unrelated to the Mitchell‘s of this research – family recorded so that they will not be mixed up
into Mitchell records of later census reports.
James Mitchell not connected to Mitchell‘s of this research at this time – I believe there is a family connection to the
Mitchell‘s I find in Kendal, Westmoreland – possibly a brother to Wilson (b. 1789) raised a family in Kendal.
19
I originally recorded this Mitchell family because of the name ―Wilson‖ in the family – but it turned out that John
Mitchell married Rebecca Wilson.
20
Reported as a widower in the census. It appears Thomas Kewley married his much older wife, Ann, some time
around the early 1830's. The information I have, thus far, shows that Thomas and Ann only had one child, Frances.
Frances Kewley, born around 1834 in Egremont, married John Mitchell, born in Kirkby Ireleth, Lancashire, England. I
am researching a lead on a possible Thomas and Ann Kewley son, James, born in 1832.
21
This John Mitchell family is unrelated to the Mitchell‘s of this research at this time.
According to the Civil War records of Thomas Mitchel – he married Mary Ann High in Fleetwood, Lancashire,
England March 1, 1854. A different sources states that he married Mary Ann in Schykill County, Pennsylvania (I
cannot locate a marriage record from either place). I am tracking a lead on the possible parents of Mary Ann being
Anthony (b. 1801 Lancashire) and Ann High (b. 1806) of Church Coniston, England (there is a 3-year old Maryan in
their household in the 1841 Church Coniston census). Thomas Mitchell‘s biography from Clarion Co, PA states he was
the son of Wilson and Martha Mitchell. Thomas is the uncle of Wilson Mitchell (b. 1865) who later immigrated to
Clarion Co, PA in 1886.
43
James and George Mitchell recorded because they live around Wm Mitchell who ended up in Clarion Co, PA by
1870. I am looking at the possibility that James, George, and Wm. may be a related Mitchell branch.
44
Thomas was recognized for distinguished service during the Civil War enlisting Sept. 17, 1862 in the Union Cavalry,
Co. C 14 th Regiment – discharged on May 30, 1865.
51 I have no idea if George is related to Wilson Mitchell, but he reported arrival to the states in 1887 and was naturalized
in 1894. Prior to moving to Mahoning County he lived in Syracuse, Meigs County, Ohio. Getting George‘s and
Wilson‘s naturalization records are a future point of research.
52 Wilson reported arrival into U.S. as 1887 and naturalization as 1893.
They had a family of eleven children, nine of whom are now living.
Mr. Mitchell enlisted in Company C, Fourteenth Pennsylvania Cavalry, and served to the
the firm of J. B. Stephens and Thomas Mitchell, and developed the Pine Run Coal Mine, giving
employment from 125 to 150 men.
He was elected burgess of the borough for the third time in 1886. 58
Church Coniston
CHURCH CONISTON township and chapelry comprises a romantic district, with a village
of scattered houses built on the sides of eminences, at the head of Coniston lake, four miles
W.S.W. of Hawkshead. From the margin of this lake is obtained a view of the Vale of Yewdale,
with its stupendous crags and venerable tree; and near to it is the valley of Tilberthwaite, where
the fells on either side appear like one mass of blue slate, from the great number of quarries made
in them for its extraction. Some hundreds of the inhabitants are constantly employed in the slate
quarries and copper mines of this neighbourhood, 400 being employed at the copper mines; and
the average quantity of excellent ore raised monthly is about 250 tons, which as well as the slates,
are boated down the lake to Nibthwaite, and then carted to Greenodd or Ulverston for shipment.
Coniston Old Man, and other lofty mountains, are in this neighbourhood. The ascent to the old
man is generally made from the inn at the head of the lake. A beacon erected on the summit of
this mountain forms a very prominent object.
The Chapel, at Coniston, which was rebuilt and enlarged in 1819, is a neat building, with a
small tower and two bells. It contains about 300 sittings, of which 120 are free, provided by £125
granted towards its re-erection, by the Incorporated Society for building churches and chapels.
The living, which is a perpetual curacy, in the gift of T.R.G. Braddyll, Esq., and now in the
incumbency of the Rev. Thomas Tolming, is worth £117 per annum.
Here is a Baptist Chapel, erected in 1837, and enlarged in 1841. A handsome school was
built at Coniston, by subscription, about twelve years ago, but owing to some misunderstanding
between the clergyman and the parishioners, it is at present closed up.
Coniston Hall, the ancient seat of the Flemings, of Rydal, in Westmorland, is an antique
mansion, on the border of the lake, supposed to have been erected during the reign of Elizabeth.
This estate came into the possession of the Flemings, in the time of Henry III, by the marriage of
Richard le Fleming with an heiress of Adam de Urswick. A court baron is held occasionally for
this manor. The hall is now occupied by Mr. Joseph Irving, farmer. Here is also a neat mansion
called Hollywarth Cottage, the residence of John Barratt, Esq., managing partner for the Coniston
59 I need to follow up on this information – could be the origination point for the ―Wilson‖ Mitchell namesakes.
Kirkby-Ireleth
Copper Mining Company. On the western bank of Coniston lake a large hotel was erected in
1849, by J.G. Marshall, Esq., from a design furnished by Mr. Thompson, of Kendal, architect.
Tent Lodge is another pleasant dwelling, now unoccupied, on the banks of the lake, but in
Monk Coniston township.
We beg here to present the reader with a short biographical notice of Miss Elizabeth Smith, a
lady of extraordinary talents and acquirements, who resided at Tent Lodge, from 1801, till her
death in 1806. Miss Smith was born at Burnhall, near Durham, the residence of her paternal
ancestors, in December, 1776. In 1785, her father removed with his family to Piercefield, a seat
which he possessed near Chepstow, but the depreciation in value of public securities, and the
general disturbance of commercial affairs in 1793, caused the failure of many long-established
houses, and amongst them was that of the banking establishment of Mr. Smith. "This untoward
event compelled him to relinquish Piercefield, and for many years after the family might be said
to have no settled abode. In 1794, Mr. Smith procured a captain's commission in the army, and
proceeded to Ireland, where his regiment was stationed, and where he continued for several
years;" but the family took possession of Tent Lodge, in 1801, and "here the greater part of Miss
Smith's pieces were composed, and most of her translations from the Hebrew and German made."
Miss Bowdler, who published a brief "Account of Miss Smith's Life and Character," says that at
the age of thirteen she was well acquainted with the French and Italian languages, and had made
considerable progress in the study of geometry, and some other branches of the mathematics. In
1793, Miss Smith had begun the study of German, and during the following winter acquired some
knowledge of the Arabic and Persian languages. She also learned the Spanish language, and in
1794, began Latin and Greek. She studied the Hebrew, with the assistance of Parkhurst, "but she
had no regular instruction in any language except French," and yet she was subsequently enabled
to read fluently the most difficult Latin and Greek classics; possessed so critical a knowledge of
German, as to translate without the aid of a dictionary, almost any author in that language; and her
intimate acquaintance with Hebrew is evidinced by her translation of the Book of Job and other
portions of the Bible; in the notes to which pieces she proves likewise her familiarity with Arabic,
&c." She died August the 7th, 1806, at the early age of 29 years; and her remains lie interred at
Hawkshead, in the church of which parish, a small white marble monument is erected to her
memory.
Lewis's Topographical Dictionary of England, 5th Ed. Vol. 1.
Kirkby-Ireleth 60 (St. Cuthbert), a parish, in the union of ULVERSTONE, hundred of
LONSDALE, north of the Sands, N. Division of the county of LANCASTER, 4 1/2 miles (N. W.
by W.) from Ulverstone; containing 3449 inhabitants. The parish is separated from the parish of
Millom, in the county of Cumberland, by the river Duddon which falls into the Irish sea; it
comprises, exclusively of waste land and common, about 1000 inclosed and cultivated acres, with
a tolerable portion of woodland. The soil is of a clayey nature, alternated with tracts of lighter
quality, and there is some good meadow land; there are some quarries of dark blue slate of good
quality, which is conveyed by the river to distant places. It is in contemplation, by making an
embankment for the West Cumberland and Furness railway, to reclaim nearly 6000 acres of land
near the mouth of the Duddon, which are now covered by the tides. The living is a discharged
vicarage, valued in the king's books at 5.6.8 pounds; net income, 125 pounds; patrons and
appropriators, Dean and Chapter of York. The church contains several ancient monuments, and
the windows exhibit some beautiful specimens of stained glass. There are chapels at Broughton in
Furness, Woodland, and Seathwaite. John Dodgson left 300 pounds for the use of the poor, and
for education.
EGREMONT (St. Michael), a market-town and parish, in the union of WHITEHAVEN,
ALLERDALE ward above Derwent, W. Division of the county of CUMBERLAND, 42 1/2 miles
(S. W. by S.) from Carlisle, and 293 (N. W. by N.) from London; containing 1750 inhabitants.
This place is of great antiquity, and the neighbourhood is supposed to have been the scene of
various conflicts between the Saxons and the Danes. At the time of the Conquest, Ranulph de
Meschines, to whom William had granted the whole county of Cumberland, gave the great barony
of Copeland (now called the barony of Egremont) to his brother, William de Meshines, who
erected his baronial castle on the site of an ancient Danish fort. The remains of this fortress, to the
north-west of the town, though not extensive, exhibit traces of antiquity and strength: they consist
chiefly of the gateway-tower and vaulted entrance, of circular arches in the Norman style;
portions of the outer wall, inclosing a quadrangular area; the postern, and three narrow gateways,
communicating with the outworks, which are of a later date. The town is situated within less than
three miles of the Irish Sea, and consists principally of one spacious street: the houses are in
general ancient, but many improvements have been recently effected, and a new bridge has been
built over the river Echen. The clothing business appears to have been anciently carried on here;
the principle articles of manufactured at present are checks, linen, canvas, sail-cloth, and paper;
the tanning and dressing of leather prevail to a limited extent, and in the parish are mines of
ironstone, from which about 100 tons of ore are raised per day, and shipped at Whitehaven, for
the supply of the iron-foundries of South Wales; limestone and red freestone are found in the
neighbourhood, and a considerable quantity of lime is burnt. The market is on Saturday, and is
well supplied with corn: the fairs are on Feb. 18th for horses, the third Friday in May, and Sept.
18th for horned cattle, sheep, &c.; on the three days following the last fair, a festival is celebrated,
during which the inhabitants are allowed to sell ale without a licence: statute fairs for hiring
servants are held at Whitsuntide and Martinmas.
The town was anciently a borough, and returned members to parliament in the 23rd of
Edward I., but was on its own petition disfranchised, in the 24th of the same reign; the burgesses
possessed many other privileges, of which all records are lost. A borough serjeant, two bailiffs,
four constables, two hedge and corn-viewers, and assessors of damages, are appointed at the court
leet of the lord of the manor, held in April, at which time a customary court is also held; a court
baron is held every third Friday, under the Earl of Egremont, for the recovery of debts under 40s.
The town is a polling-place for the western division of the county. The living is a discharged
rectory, valued in the king's books at (pounds) 7.12.1., and in the patronage of the Wyndham
family; net income, 249 (pounds). The church is an ancient structure, of which the east end is in
the early English style, and the remainder chiefly Norman; it has a low tower. There is a place of
worship for Wesleyans; and a National school is supported by subscription. Near the ruins of the
castle is a cairn of stones, called Woful Bank, which seems to have some reference to a battle
fought prior to the Conquest.
Miscellaneous Isle of Man, England Records (Kewley)
[From Manx Families, A.W.Moore, MS 1889]
Lamothe’s Family
John Dominique (b 1731, obit 1807), son of Sieur Arnaud & Marguerite Perez of Bayonne in
the Basses Pyrenees, was the progenitor of the Manx Lamothe‘s. On the 30th of June 1760, he
went as surgeon on board the privateer brig St. Lawrence, of 10 guns. She captured several
English vessels, the crews of which rose and took possession of the St. Lawrence, bringing here,
on the 9th November in the same year, into Douglas. Dominique with the rest was imprisoned in
Castle Rushen, but was released on parole. When H.M.S. Delight came to take off the prisoners in
January 1761, he ‗having gone on an exploring expedition into the Island 1 was not to be found
and so the Delight sailed without him. He was then re-imprisoned in Castle Rushen, but it is said
that his medical skill proved so successful in the case of the Governor‘s wife that he was soon
released, and, as after the conclusion of peace in 1763 he remained in the Island of his own free
will, he continued the practice of his profession there. In 1763, he married Susanna (born 1741,
1 From account of the family by J.C. Lamothe
[From Manx Families, A.W.Moore, MS 1889]
Stole or Stowell of Ballastowell
This name was formerly Stole, and the name of their property Ballastole. Both have now
become Stowell. The family of this name was found slatted at Ballastole in Maughold at the end
of the 17th century. None of them were men of any mark till we come to one Thomas,1 who was
chiefly notorious for having had 16 children (1 daughter and 15 sons) by his second wife Ann
Browne (born 1739, died 1783), the eldest and only daughter 2 of Robert Brown, father of the
Revd Robert Brown, afterwards Vicar of Braddan. By his first and third wives, he had no issue.
The eldest son John was born in 1762. He was connected with the earliest attempts at a weekly
newspaper in the Island and was chiefly remarkable for several clever satirical poems on local
politics. The best of these are ‗Salad‘ and ‗The Retrospect,‘ which, with others, were published by
him ‗at a private press‘ in 1795. He married Mary, the youngest daughter n0 of Lewis Geneste
(the elder) and had issue two sons, William who married a Miss Forel and died without issue, and
Joseph, a medical man, who died unmarried. John died in 1799, at the early age of 37. The second
son was Thomas (born 1764 and died 1821). He was an able and active lawyer. In 1792, he
published the Statute Laws and Ordinances of the Island. In 1796, he was sworn in as Acting
Attorney General, and in 1804, he became Clerk of the Rolls. He build Hampton Court, Braddan,
and lived there. He was married three times, (1) to Alice, eldest daughter of Lewis Geneste,
whose youngest daughter married John Stowell (see above). By her he had one daughter Nessy,
who married the Revd Thomas Howard, and afterwards Rector of Ballaugh. He married (2)
Elizabeth, daughter of William Callow, merchant, and had issue several children all of whom died
young except Elizabeth who lived (unmarried) till 1882, and Amelia, also unmarried who died
before her. (3) He married Hester Clark 3 by whom he had one son Joseph Percival, who died in
1832 without progeny. The next son was Hugh, Rector of Ballaugh 4 (see Manx Worthies) and
who married Amelia (died January 9, 1814), a younger daughter of the above William Callow and
had issue Hugh, afterwards Canon of Chester (see Manx Worthies); and … who married the Revd
William Gill, Vicar of Malew and had issue. She died in 1886 at the age of 87. Hugh, Canon of
Chester, married in 1828 Ann Susannah Lacy Ashworth and had issue (1) Hugh Ashworth, died
1887, Vicar of Breadsall, who married Annie Isabella Lamothe (born 1835) and had issue,5(2)
Thomas Alfred, Rector of Salford, and (3) Lucy married Mr Tayleur, and others. The next two
brothers, James and William, were twins. James was the Captain of a merchant vessel. He married
Ann Redfern and had issue only one of whom John married and had a son, a clergyman. William,
a merchant, married Ann Hendry and had issue William Hendry and two daughters, one of whom,
Cecilia, married … Phillips n1. William Hendry was Principal and Theological Tutor of
Rotherham College and afterwards of Chestnut College. The next son, Joseph, was born in 1772
and was the eighth of 15 brothers. Of the remaining seven we know nothing. A memoir of him
was written by his brother Hugh, who was greatly attached to him. From it we learn that he was in
early life educated by the Revd. Philip Moore at the Douglas Grammar School and as he was a
clever and forward boy, he became a great favorite. On his preceptor's death in 1783, he went to
the Castletown Academy, then under the charge of the Revd Thomas Castley, M.A., a man of
considerable erudition. In 1792, he became tutor to Governor Shaw‘s children, and in 1794, he
was ordained as a preacher. He seems to have excelled as did his more distinguished brother and
nephew. In 1795, he married Elizabeth, daughter of Dr. Dominic Lamothe of Castletown and had
issue (1) Thomas of Ramsey, surgeon, who married Ann, daughter of William Courie, Master of
Taubman‘s school and had issue Joseph,6 Mariann,7 Elizabeth,8 Amelia,9 Hugh,10 Fredick. He
was a surgeon in Ramsey. (2) Ann married Thomas Kewley of Castletown. (3) Betsey married the
Revd. … Qualtrough, Vicar of Rushen. (4) John Lamothe, afterwards Vicar of German.
Joseph, shortly after his marriage, opened a school in Castletown, which he conducted with
great success till he was appointed to the headship both of the grammar and mathematical schools
at Peel. In June 1801, he was seized by typhus fever and died on the 15th of that month. John
Lamothe, the son of the above, was Vicar of German from 1839 to 1881. He resigned the living in
1881 and died in the following year. He married (1) Miss Greenor [or Grunor] of Shirtyeland[?]
41
and had 2 sons, the Rev J E and the Revd H., and 4 daughters, and (2) he married Margaret
Fletcher of Newcastle-on-Tyne.
1 Edward Stoile married Anne Casement 1726 and had issue … Thomas born 1733.
2 JMO: Robert Brown & wife Ann Cosnahan had 9 children, 5 of whom were daughters.
3 JMO: 3rd wife Hester Clark was dau of Captn Joseph Clarke & Esther Moore, born 1790,
died 1850, md 1809 to Tho. Stowell. Hester & Tho are mentioned in the 1813 will of Hester‘s
great aunt Ann Durie Fine
4 Another son William (born 1765, died 1813) was a Captain in the Merchant Service.
Newspaper giving account of his death says: ‗His active and humane exertions in all cases of
shipwreck and casual misfortune have endeared his memory to the community.‘
5 (1) Rev Hugh F. LaMothe, Rector of Wigton, Kents[?] and has issue Hugh Oswald
Douglas, Frederick Bromfield Lamothe and Annie Isabelle. (2) Ernest Alfred married his cousin
A Brief History of Laxey
Laxey 67 is a widespread village on the eastern side of the Island. Its name is derived from the
Norse word "Laxa" or salmon river, as apparently in early times great catches of salmon were
taken from the river there.
Today Laxey is largely a residential area, but during the last century it became a thriving
mining village. Today, very little evidence of this is to be seen, the mines have long since closed
down, but fortunately there is still preserved in all its glory the famous Laxey Wheel, said by
many to be the biggest in the world.
The Laxey Wheel, or Lady Isabella as it is known, was constructed in 1854 by John
Casement, a native of Laxey and a brilliant engineer. It was designed by him to pump the surplus
water from the mines and, by cleverly using the natural fall of the mountain streams as a power
source, he produced this widely acclaimed remarkable engineering feat. The wheel has a
circumference of 227ft, a diameter of 72 1/2ft and a breadth of 6ft and was capable of raising 250
gallons per minute from a depth of 1200ft. The horizontal pumping rods, supported on wheels
running on rails, are carried from the wheel to the mine shaft on a viaduct - a distance of 200yds.
This magnificent piece of engineering is still in perfect condition and attracts thousands of people
each year, who come to see it working.
The Laxey mines, which included Zinc, Copper and Silver as well as Lead ore, were worked
for many years, and in the later half of the nineteenth century were very prosperous. Ore to the
value of £2,068,000 being produced between 1831 and 1884. They extended to a depth of around
1800ft.
67 Laxey, Isle of Mann is the reported birth location of Thomas Kewley, father of Francis and wife of John Mitchell.
Valley that her family found the remarkable Joanne‘s House in Bonita Springs, and most recently
Hope Hospice in Ft. Myers. Lois‘s daughters decorated her hospice suite for each holiday and
season along with family photographs, lighted pink flamingos, and fresh flowers. The lanai
offered a constant view of the Florida sun, a relaxing lake, and palm trees. During the past 3
months, her daughter, Janet and husband, Moe Vari, were loving caregivers. Their condominium
became the Ft. Myer‘s hotel and taxi service as the family came to say goodbye to their Mother
and Grandmother.
Lois was born on December 1, 1926, in New Castle, PA, the only child of the late Archibald
situated on a hillside above Yellow Creek. Neighborhood children could always be found at the
skating on the creek. In 1958, the house was in the Parade of Homes. It had the areas first
microwave oven, and featured wool carpet that was the same as the carpet in the White House.
Lois worked with her husband, Ken, in their land development, and new home construction
business-- Holiday Realty and the Frontier Land Company. They built over 500 homes in Poland,
Boardman, and Campbell. They operated the Holiday Bowl, Holiday Health Spa, the Embassy,
Hello Listers,
I am a new subscriber to Genealogy.com but have recently come accross this Mitchel info
and thought it might be of use to someone out there.
Received this will of Robert Barwise in the quest in searching for my John Barwise born
1750. Is there anyone out there on the list who is researching Mitchel in the parish of Dean,
Cumberland, England.
Does anyone recognise this Robert or any of the people named in it? The place was very hard
to read and I cannot find a Kirby/Kurby at Dean, Cumberland, UK. It looks very much like
Thursby but that is too far away to be the correct place, could have been a farmhouse.
WILL OF ROBERT BARWISE
PARISH OF DEAN, CUMBERLAND, ENGLAND.
In the name of God Amen. The thirty first day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand
seven hundred and ninety three. I Robert Barwise of Kirby? in the parish of Dean and county of
Cumberland, being very sick and weak of body, but of perfect mind and memory do make and
ordain this my last will and testament, in the form and manner following.
First I give and bequeath to my daughter Mary Mitchel 70 the wife of Joseph Mitchel the sum
of ten pounds, of good and lawful money to be paid six months after my decease, also a chest
which was formerly her mothers.
Likewise I give and bequeath to Joseph and Robert Mitchel sons of Joseph Mitchel and
Susannah Mitchel daughter of Joseph Mitchel aforesaid, the sum of twenty shillings each, to be
paid twelve months after my decease.
Likewise, I do constitute, make and ordain my son John Barwise only and sole executor of
this my last will and testament, paying all my debts, legacies and funeral expenses. I have
hereafter set my hand and seal, the day above mentioned.
Robert Barwise his signature and seal.
Signed, sealed, published, pronounced and declared by the said Robert Barwise as his last
