EMIGH and HORNING
Much of the information I have on my Emigh and Horning lines are still in the
verification stage - I have data, but need documentation 1 . From the information I have
gathered from internet sources and census records the Emigh's are focused in the region of
Dutchess County, New York after arriving into the United States from Germany. Early
Emigh information can be obtained from a book titled, "Settlers of the Beekman Patent" Vol
4, by Frank Dougherty. Frank shows Johann Nicholas Emigh, born around 1680 -1685 in
Dennenfel, Germany, as the earliest Emigh settler of the Dutchess County area known as "the
Clove". Nicholas is reported to be the son of Hans Veltin Emich. Nicholas married Anna
Catherina (Mueller) Miller on September 4, 1709 in London, England. Catherine was the
daughter of Henrich Mueller/Miller of Staudrum. My family branch comes from Nicholas
and Anna’s son, Hans Jury (George) Emigh (1727 – 1810).
Hans (George) Emigh was born and raised in the Beekman Patent area of Dutchess
County, New York. Things are not quite as clear at this point, he may have made a move to
Greene County, NY where his son John G. Emigh was reportedly born in 1756.
John G. Emigh seems to have moved around some before I located him in the 1820
census in Berkshire County, Massachusetts (Egremont). John G. remained in Berkshire
County until his 1824 death. His son George began his family in Berkshire County and
eventually made a move to Norwich County in Oxford, Ontario, Canada. George died in
Norwich in 1843 and his children ended up all around Canada and the United States. His son
Samuel reportedly ended up in Michigan, William and Henry remained in Canada, John is
said to have moved back to Egremont, MA and the son of my direct line, George, ended up in
Pennsylvania by 1850.
It wasn't until the 1850 Federal Census when I first located George, living with
Herbert and Eliza Hughes in Erie County, Pennsylvania. I am still trying to determine if
Lucy Eliza Rider Hughes 2 is a sister to George Emigh.
My Horning line was well established in the Pennsylvania in the early 1700's after the
arrival of Georg Ludwig Horning from Germany in 1732. After a time in the Philadelphia
region, the Horning's of this research settled in Montgomery County, PA for some time.
According to internet sources, George Ludwig's son, Elias, is the Horning branch I follow
from. My own documentation and research records begin with Elias's son, John Horning.
John was born 24 December 1792 in Montgomery County, PA and died 25 April 1869 in Elk
County, PA. From John's will, I know he spent some time in Northumberland County, PA.
The 1800 index lists a Christian Hornig of Northumberland - I do not know if there is a
family link. There is a Christian Horting 1802 death recorded in Lancaster County, PA—
coincidentally, the same year of death as George Ludwig Horning. I find John Horning with
his daughter, Esther (possibly named after his mother, Esther Weyerman) in 1850 Elk
County, PA. Esther Horning, the younger, married George Emigh in 1854. George and
Esther Horning Emigh were the parents of my great-great grandmother, Mary Emigh, who
married James Buchanan Mohney in 1880 Elk County, PA.
Terry Davis (Carolyn, Harry Mitchell, Gertrude Mohney, Mary Emigh, George Emigh)
1
Many thanks go to Frank Emigh for his very informative documentation on ―The Emigh Family‖ – much of the
research I have obtained and surmised has been verified and confirmed. Special thanks to Patrick Collar, whose
willingness to share has aided my research greatly.
2
Lucy Eliza Hughes had two children before her marriage to Herbert Hughes – their last name was Rider – I still
need to find out who she married first and what her name was before it was Rider.
Eliza Hughs (b. 1812) most likely sister of George Emigh (b. 1823). Need to find early documentation on her to
confirm a family connection and maybe verify possitively the parentage of George.
7
Catherine Horning Miller, daughter of John and Polly Horning, appears to be a widow in this census.
8
Samuel Horning (Sep 6, 1771-Feb 1,1855) married Martha Shannon (Feb 12, 1778-Apr 25, 1815) at St. James,
Perkiomen, Montgomery Co, PA. Samuel is son of Michael and Hannah Roberts Horning.
9
The Derr family is linked to the Hornings somehow – most likely to Susannah, wife of David Horning.
David Horning of Montgomery County, PA most likely linked to John Horning (b. 1792) family and Amos
Horning who later comes to Clearfield County – but a confirmed connection has not been made yet.
11
Amos Horning – family connection not made at this time but he and family ends up in Clearfield Co, PA in 1880.
Amos reported married Sarah Z. Hoch.
12
Jane Horning Iddings, daughter of John and Mary Horning.
13
George Emigh married Esther Horning September 1854 , the daughter of John and Polly Horning. George and
Esther lived in Elk County, PA (where Esther's parents were) - later, George and Esther moved to Clearfield County,
I do not know where this particular Charles Emigh fits in – if he does at all.
30
All indicators point to this Samuel as the son of George C. Emigh – family connection not made at this time. An
additional circumstantial clue is a May 1883 Civil War pension record (from Blair County, PA) in the file of George
Emigh – it has George C. Emigh’s name on it.
31
George ―Shiner‖ Emigh is the son of John Emigh (from first unknown wife) and grandson of George and Esther
Horning Emigh. George was reared by his grandparents and worked most his life as a laborer and trackman for the
railroad. George repurchased the house and land of his grandfather that was sold to settle his estate. Shiner’s
daughter, Lottie June currently resides in the house in Penfield.
George Emigh
Biographies
Father of Mary Emigh, youngest son of 5 and 3 sisters to George J. Emigh, grandson of
Johannes (John) G. Emigh, great-grandson of Hans Jury/George Emigh, great-great-grandson
of Johan Nicholas Emigh who emigrated from the Palatine area of Germany to New York in
1710. George’s parents, George and Sarah, moved to Norwich, Oxford County, Ontario,
Canada some time before 1820. It is assumed that the elder George left the United States due
to his allegiance to the British at a time when post-revolution sentiment was running strong
against Loyalists (about the time of the War of 1812). The Emigh’s joined a Quaker
settlement that was established between 1811 – 1820 by Peter Lossing and Peter DeLong.
Peter Lossing was the grandson of the Peter Lossing who married Anna Maria Emigh, sister of
Hans Jury/George.
A number of Emighs signed Canadian citizenship documents. It is believed, but not
confirmed, that young George signed an oath of Canadian citizenship on Jan. 19, 1842 –
George J., Samuel and John had signed their names for citizenship in 1840. George J. Emigh
died at Norwich Feb. 4, 1843.
Around 1849/50 the elder Georges children scattered (believed to be around the time of
the death of their mother, Sarah). William and Henry remained in Canada, Samuel believed to
move to Michigan, John believed to return to Egremont, MA, and the younger George was in
Erie County, PA by 1850.
George was living with Herbert and Eliza Hughs (and Eliza’s two children from a
previous marriage) in 1850. A family relationship has not been made at this time.
George purchased a parcel of land from John Green and wife on Nov. 29, 1851. The land
was situated in Centerville, now known as Kersey, Elk County, PA (Deed Book C, page 412,
Elk County). In 1852 he sole the property to Towsend Fall (Deed Book C, pages 415 and 416,
Elk County).
George married Esther Horning, daughter of John and Polly Horning, in Sept 1854 Elk
County, PA. 34
On September 5, 1864, George enlisted as a Private in Co. C, 211 th Regiment of the
Pennsylvania Infantry. His military record indicated he was 42 years old at the time of his
enlistment, that he was born in Massachusetts, was 5 feet 8 inches tall, fair complexion, brown
hair, and blue eyes. He enlisted for one year and was mustered out June 2, 1865 at
Alexandria, Va.
George and family moved to Penfield, Huston TWP, Clearfield County, PA around
Spring 1886. He purchased land in Penfield from Evo DeMay, on April 12, 1886, and from
Lucien Bird, on August 31, 1886. He died in Penfield on January 14, 1904. He and his wife
Esther Horning Emigh are buried in Bundy Cemetery.
Much of the information on George’s parentage and early years has been filled in by
strong circumstantial supposition. Very little factual data, prior to 1850, has been acquired to
date.
Mary (Polly) Emigh
Christening records verify given name. Mary was called ―Moll‖ by some family members. Mary was
known to be illiterate her whole life. She enjoyed having books read to her and she was also an ardent listener
to the Lone Ranger series on radio, and was quite fond of western movies. She was also noted for smoking
cutty pipe tobacco in a corn cob pipe. She was a great baker and at one point in time kept a tamed black snake
for a pet. After her husband’s death in 1930, she lived with different children. At the time of the 1936 flood,
she resided in Freeport, Armstrong, Co., PA with her son James and family. The story is told that she refused to
leave the house when the flooding was going on – two grandsons picked her up in her rocking chair and put her
on a row boat to get to higher ground. In another story, while residing with her son, James, Mary was playing
cards. In a game she thought she had won, when she found out she lost she started walking to Saxonburg (a
town 12 miles away in Butler County) to a home for the elderly. James picked her up and declared to the family
that they would not play cards anymore. In her later years Mary’s hair was worn below her knees.
Emigh and Horning - 20

Andrew J. Barnhart
Andrew Barnhart was born in Chatauqua county, New York, in 1829. He made his home
with his father, Peter Barnhart, till he was twenty years of age, when he purchased a tannery
and run it two years. Seized with the western fever, which is always prevalent in the east, he
sold out and went to Michigan and leased a farm for two years. The state of his wife's health
induced him to return. Mrs. Barnhart died soon afterwards. One year after this event, he
purchased a tannery in his native town and continued his first business about two years, when
he sold out and returned to Michigan and engaged in the boot and shoe business in
Schoolcraft. This he continued fourteen years, when, selling his stock, he purchased a farm in
the vicinity and moved upon it one year, and when he sold, returned to Schoolcraft, where he
remained two years. In April, 1868, he came to Buchanan county and purchased a half interest
with his brother, in a farm of three hundred and sixty-five acres, in Summer township, with a
view of going into the dairy business. But at the expiration of five years, finding it not
sufficiently remunerative for the amount of time and money invested, he rented the farm and
moved to Independence. Here, after about one year spent in prospecting, he engaged in the
grocery business, in which he still continues. In the year 1878 he purchased a half interest in a
creamery in Fairbank township, which he still owns. In 1880 he added four more creameries,
one being situated in Perry township, two in Black Hawk county, and one in Independence.
The ones in Fairbank township. and in this city are run by six horse power steam engines; the
others run by tread horse power. He runs eighteen teams, besides a great deal of hauling done
by outsiders, and gives employment to thirty men. He makes as high as three thousand pounds
of butter daily through the best portions of the season. He ships principally to New York city,
but frequently to Philadelphia.
Mr. Barnhart married his first wife in New York State in the year 1851. Her maiden name
was Theresa Cheney, who died in 1854. He married his second wife, Miss Alice E. Rider, in
New York State, in 1856. They have two children - Maurice W., born July 9, 1863; now
engaged with his father in the creamery business in Independence. Frenella I., born March 5,
1868. Mr. Barnhart, affable as a dealer, has a kind word for every one and the highest respect
of all his acquaintances. Politically, he is a Greenbacker, and was one of seven men who first
represented that party in this township. 35
35
A.J. Barnhart – son-in-law of Herbert and Lucy Eliza Rider Hughs (married to daughter Lucy Rider). Biography
John Clark Emigh
John Clark Emigh is buried at Oak Creek Cemetery in Raymond, Lancaster Co.,
Nebraska. He was the first U.S. Mail carrier out of Raymond, Nebraska. He moved there in
1895. It should be noted that John Clark Emigh was born on February 11, 1848 but his
marriage affidavit dated March 3, 1872 shows him to be 22 years of age which would indicate
that he was born in 1850 or his age as recorded on that document is in error. The following is
an article from the Fresno (California) Bee dated February 11, 1944.
FRESNAN, 96, RECALLS LINCOLN'S DEATH AS SADDEST DAY
John C. Emigh, 3436 Madison Avenue, retired farmer who remembers the day Abraham
Lincoln's assassination as the saddest in his life, celebrated his ninety sixth birthday
anniversary today with his usual open house for friends and relatives. He turned from chatting
with guests to listening on the radio whenever war bulletins were broadcast; however, with
three grandsons in the armed services, Emigh is following this conflict with as much interest
as the Civil War of his youth which gave him the opportunity to see the martyred president. "I
was a boy of 14, working on the farm near Johnstown, Pennsylvania, when Lincoln came to
speak in a little town near us," Emigh said. I remember it seemed to me then one the most
wonderful speeches I ever heard. That tall, rugged man looked to me like a strong old farmer,
and I liked him. I remember he said if the Confederates would come back to the Union they
could keep their slaves but they did not and later he freed the slaves. The day we heard of his
death I still remember as the saddest day of my life. My father told me and turned away and
could not talk for awhile. Finally, he said he would stop working for that day because he was
feeling too badly to go on." Emigh recalls many days sometimes passed before his farmer
neighbors in Pennsylvania obtained details of Civil War conflicts, a far cry from the almost
instantaneous radio and newspaper coverage of today. "This is my fourth big war, not
counting the Indian fights," he said. "But I do not think it will last much longer. I think in a
short time the Axis is going to go pop." His grandsons in the service are Private First Class
John Barksdale, infantry, stationed in the Pacific and John A. Emigh, naval electrical
instructor, now in San Diego (California), both of Fresno, and Corporal Norris Emigh,
infantry, who is fighting in Italy. Retired a quarter of a century ago, after 70 strenuous years
as a farmer, homesteader, restaurateur, mail carrier and founder of Webster, Kansas, Emigh
now Spends his Winters in Fresno with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. L.A.
Hatler, and his Summers with his son, John Emigh of Selden, Kansas. "Travel" he said, "is
my hobby, and I indulge it whenever I have the opportunity without being unpatriotic and
crowding our soldiers and sailors out of a place. And I do not need any one to go along with
me either." Emigh recalls that as a middle western homesteader he twice shook the hand of
President Theodore Roosevelt, once when Teddy was campaigning for the vice presidency in
1900 and when he sought the White House on the Bull Moose ticket in 1912. However, he
does not consider either Lincoln or Roosevelt the best speaker he ever heard. That palm he
gives to a man, "almost a neighbor," whom he met frequently during a quarter of a century in
Nebraska and Kansas but for whom he never voted. "There never was any one on a platform
like William Jennings Bryan," he said. The aged Fresnan said he never has failed to vote in a
presidential election and this year will be no exception.
FERMANAGH TOWNSHIP
On the 18th of October, 1798, he sold ―Armagh‖ to Elias Horning, a native of
Montgomery County, whose father, John Horning, was a German, who had purchased a large
tract of land in Montgomery and Bucks Counties. He had thirteen children, who, with one
exception, settled on their father’s land. The father lived to the age of one hundred and twenty
death of his father. After receiving the share of his father’s estate, he migrated to the Juniata
Looking for information on the Horning's from PA. My GGGGrandmother was Elizabeth
Horning, married to Dr. C. R. Earley. She was born in Sinnemahoning, PA in 1826. She died
in 1918 and her obituary lists her parents as John & Mary Love Horning. It also lists her only
living brother as Elias (I believe his real name was James Elias). I have several pictures of her
George J. Emigh's siblings were William Emigh (my great-great-great grandfather), Samuel
Emigh (went to Michigan per 1850 census) John Emigh m. Harriet Forster (went back to
Egremont Mass) Henry Emigh, George (the Younger) and three females (no names). I would
like to find out what Charity's maiden name was, also William's wife Sarah Ann (possibly
Topham?) any help will be appreciated and I will share any info. that I have. Thanks again,
please help if you can.
Amy, I have the names of George J. Emigh's sisters as Elizabeth, Eleanor, and Mary. I
have Eleanor b. 24 September 1795. I don't have maiden names for either Charity or Sarah
Ann. I do have the Father of John (Johann) and back to Germany. I will share any info that I
have also. Lou 40
Dear Terry:
I found that quite fascinating about what your discovering on Wilson Mitchell. Years
ago, before I learned about what part of England he came from, I noticed the biography in the
Clarion County, Pa book, and didn't think much then other than that sometimes when people
came to this country, if relatives were already established here, they went to where they
resided first. Then I forgot about that biography. I think that Thomas Mitchell may be his
uncle to do to the fact that when Wilson Mitchell, arrived, if he had no family already here,
why Clarion County, Pa. and not New York or Chicago? I hope you are able to find evidence
that Thomas is his uncle.
I've made some contact on searching the ancestry of our John Horning. Linton H. Love
from Ontario, has a fascinating website on the descendants of Ludwig Horning ( who arrived
in Philadelphia, Pa in 1732). he so far has 801 descendants listed, he has more info, but not all
is listed yet. On his site there are several John Hornings who maybe are John Horning. These
John's were born in Pa. in the 1790's to. He could only guide me, for what was on hand with
him. When he returns to Ontario in May (he is in florida for the winter) he is going to check
into helping us out. All his information is back in ontario. He has researched more on the lines
that settled in Canada, and would like to rsearch more on those that remained in Pa. He
believes that the most likely canidate for our John Horning is: a John Horning, b. Providence
Township, Montgomery County, Pa., the son of John Horning (1755 - 1803) and Elizabeth
Haal (various spellings) (1761-1824). I was in Elk County , Pa. today and photographed the
cemetery. If John and polly horning have headstones I think they fell over and lay flat on the
ground under the snow. I will go back and investigate when the snow melts. At the library in
Ridgway I found the following: I will send you photocopies from the book it's from.
Charles Richard Earley, M. D., b. May 1, 1823 Scio, New York, d. May 16, 1898, buried
pine grove cemetery, with wife. Married 1849 to Elizabeth Horning of Fox Township.
According to the biography he was a remarkable man, active in medicine, politics and
bussiness, his whole life. During the Civil War he raised a company of volunteers "the Kersey
Rifles", and was a surgeon during the Civil War.
This is the line of George Emigh who died in Clearfield Co, PA in 1904. Several census reports showed the birth
location of George as Mass. – while others showed NY. Eliza Hughs of the 1850 Erie Co, PA census (who George
is living with) could be the sister, Elizabeth, mentioned in this response to Amy Atwood’s Genforum entry.
Follow up on Herbert and Eliza Hughes
I recorded the following to determine if there is a family connection between Eliza
Hughes and George Emigh (see 1850 Erie County, PA census). I tracked Herbert and Eliza
Hughes in the 1860, 1870 and 1880 census reports. Based on the census records and an
autobiography I found on her son-in-law, Andrew J. Barnhart I learned a few things about
Eliza - but not if she was George Emigh’s sister. I discovered that Lucy Eliza Hughes was
previous married to a man named Mr. Rider and had at least two children from him, Mary
Alice Rider and Silas Rider (both born in NY). I am still trying to verify if Lucy Eliza Rider
Hughes was an EMIGH before her first marriage.
North of Gardner Hollow
LOCATION: A stone's throw northwest of the dwelling house of Charles Ferris a halfmile
north of Gardner Hollow on the road to Verbank.
INSCRIPTIONS: 25 in number. Copied November 10, 1923, by J. Wilson Poucher, M.
D., Miss Violet Barbour, Miss Margaret DeM. Brown, Miss Caroline Ferris and Miss Helen
W. Reynolds.
REMARKS: This is a large walled enclosure, containing many unmarked field-stones
beside the marked stones listed below. Through the enclosure runs a property-line (indicated
by cobbles). North of this line the property owner has removed headstones from the enclosure
and used them in fences, horse-block, etc. South of the line the owner is Mrs. Amos D. Baker.
Mrs. Baker has a tradition that this burial-ground belonged originally to a Lutheran Church,
and she states that her father (John Williams, born 1803) attended services in the building in
his boyhood, the building being torn down approximately 1815-1820. The several histories of
Dutchess County make no mention of a Lutheran Church in Beckman but at page 233 of liber
2 of deeds in the office of the County Clerk is recorded a deed, dated September 10, 1749,
whereby Colonel Henry Beckman made a gift of site, church building and burial-ground at
this very spot for a Lutheran congregation. Further information about this congregation might
possibly be gleaned from records of the Lutherans in New York City.
Tracking the Horning Line
The following information was shared on the internet site of Linton Love, at
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~linlove/, email address love2057@rogers.com.
The line of Ludwig Horning has a lot of potential as a link to John Horning (b. 1792). One of
John’s sons has the middle name of Elias, and one of his daughters was named Esther—this
circumstancial link has me pursuing anything I can find on Elias (1761–1826 Juniata Co.,
PA) and Esther Weyerman Horning; Elias was a son of Ludwig Horning and is reported to
have had a son named John for whom I have no other information.
Ludwich Horning
This is an attempt to trace ALL descendants of our ancestor LUDWIG HORNING who
arrived in Philadelphia. Pennsylvania, on 11 August 1732. In reading this you can be sure of
two things. The first is there will be mistakes. These will be due to my carelessness or
misinterpretation of records or they may be due to some of the conflicting information in the
old files of the genealogists who were doing their research in the late 19 th or early 20 th
centuries The other fact is there will be many Horning relations who are not in this record as
yet. .
Unlike the method used in tracing one’s own direct line, I did not have access to
immediate past family history for many of these families. It was difficult to trace the families
who started to spread out of Pennsylvania to other states except my own line who came to
Canada. Luckily some very kind researchers among the Horning relations were able to supply
information which is now in this database. The following persons, listed in no particular order,
supplied information on their family lines for which I owe them many thanks..
Dorothy McCabe of Vancouver, B.C.
Gloria Oakes of Ancaster, Ontario
Donald Horning of Collingwood, Ontario
Paul Kuzyk of Hamilton, Ontario
Vona Smith of Vancouver, B.C
Charlotte Moore of Millgrove, Ontario
Rosanna Davis of Hacienda Heights, California.
Jamie Smith of Ravena, New York
Brad Murphy of Kitchener, Ontario
If you find your family is not included but have information that would help to extend
these files, I would greatly appreciate if you would get in touch with me. If you see mention of
deeds, wills, maps or photographs that I have in my files, I would be pleased to send you
copies with no obligation on your part, if you would make the request.
As of 15 December 2004, there are 1,642 Horning related individuals in this database. I
have a list of about 50 more who I believe are in our line but I have not been able to connect
them to a family as yet. I sincerely hope you will find some of your ancestors in these pages,
and I especially hope you will find some new and interesting details about them. Please don’t
hesitate to get in touch if you have questions or corrections. Maybe we can fill in some of the
blanks with your help.
