Collagenicshead office in Darlingtonis on (01325) 367367SPENDING a lunch hour having injectionsin your face isn’t everyone’s idea of fun. Butif the result is a profile that looks ten yearsyounger, a lot of women would be willingto put up with the discomfort. And 30 minutes is all it takes to have dermal fillers, consultation and all. They can go wrong, of course, leading to the dreadedeyebrow droop, or the overblown lips that led to actressLeslie Ash being ridiculed in the press, whichmakes finding a well qualified practitioner so important. And you can’t get much better qualified for thejob than Alison Matthews. Not only was Alison trained in the art of cosmeticinjections in Harley Street, but she’s been a nurse nearlyall her working life, formerly in hospitals in the regionand now with GPs in Darlington. “I’ve got twojobs, both ends of the spectrum really. I work for Collagenicsmaking people look better and with the NHSdoing chronic disease management. One of my nursingcolleagues actually uses Botox to alleviate thesymptoms of children with cerebral palsy and I’velearned a lot from her.”Alison sometimes finds herself giving health adviceto clients who come in for the injections and says a lotof people are reassured when they find out she has amedical background. Collagenics also has a team ofdoctors on call in case their practitioners have anyqueries. “You can ring them any time of the day for advice,”she says. “I’ve even rang one when he was halfway up a mountain.”Every client has to fill in a consent form with medicalhistory, which can throw up problems. Alison noticesthat I have keloid scarring on my chin, whichmeans that dermal fillers are out. “You can have collageninstead, but we always do a test on the arm tomake sure that you don’t react to it. You need to waita month and then come back,” she tells me.Fillers and collagen are used on the lines around thelips, while Botox is used on the brow and around theeyes. “I use collagen for one treatment only at the moment– it’s great for those little lip wrinkles,” says Alison.“But Botox is a real line tamer. It’s a beautifulproduct which works really, really well. You can createsome wonderful looks for very tired eyes, droopingeyelids and the frown lines that everyone hates.”To prove a point, Alison injects the lines on my brow, which have turned into furrows from squinting at acomputer for too long, and continues up my foreheadto lift my eyelids. The result isn’t instant, but after acouple of days the difference is noticeable and I’m veryhappy with the result. It’s a very natural look, but mylines have definitely been ironed out – there’s a smoothrunway down the middle of my forehead – and myCollagenics nurse practitioner Alison Matthewsbrows have lifted. It’s quick and easy and not toopainful and I can well understand how it could becomeaddictive.Botox parties have hit the headlines big time overthe past few years, as women throughout the countryditched Tupperware and Body Shop evenings in favourof something a little more extreme. But they have beenlargely unregulated and come the spring new regulationswill mean that Botox and collagen injections canonly be administered at registered premises. “It’s toprotect the public from any rogue practitioners,” saysAlison.“Changing someone’s look is a huge responsibility.I won’t take any risks. If I’m not happy with what someoneis asking me to do, I just won’t do it, but most peopleare happy to take my advice. I let them look in themirror every step of the way, but from experience Iknow what it will look like in two days time when theswelling and redness has gone.”If they’re still unsure, clients should take a good lookat Alison. The 43-year-old mother of three has herblonde hair scraped back into a ponytail, but her browis virtually unlined. She’s a great advert for cosmeticfillers.“But we don’t use anything that’s permanent anyway,so if you don’t like it, it will go away. The resultsusually last for six to nine months.”
September 2005 www.healthspectrum.co.ukN E HEALTH11THE COMPLETEMEDICAL BEAUTYPACKAGEWhat are the differenttypes of filler used?DERMALfillers tend to be broadly classified as being eithernon-permanent or permanent in their effect by bothmanufacturers and practitioners using these products. The two most widely used products in the UK are collagenand hyaluronic acid. Both these fillers are used by thousandsof practitioners on millions of patients across the world. Theirresults are generally safe and very effective.NON-PERMANENT FILLERSIn 1981, Collagen was the first filler approved in the US for softtissuefilling by injection. It is made from bovine (derived fromcows’ skin) collagen and is currently known in the UK as CollagenInstant Therapy. The collagen is taken from the cow and then purified to sucha degree that it resembles the collagen which occurs naturallyin our own skin. It is necessary to have a skin test before thistreatment, however, as some patients may be allergic to bovinecollagen.Collagen instant therapy comes in different thicknesses, dependingon the depth of your wrinkles or loss of firmness inyour skin. You will sometimes hear Collagen Instant Therapycalled by the brand names Zyderm® and Zyplast® by yourclinic.Your practitioner may discuss some other collagen only basedfillers which are available in the UK which include:Cymetra – Collagen derived from human skin.Isolagen – A new technique where collagen producing cellsare grown from small samples taken from your own skin, andthen injected back into your lines/wrinkles.The leading dermal filler used by most UK practitioners is ahyaluronic acid based product. This particular brand is manufacturedusing bacteria. Again, this product comes in differentthicknesses and is called Restylane® or Perlane®.Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found inthe spaces between the cells of body tissues in all animals. Ithas already been used widely in general medicine to help eyesurgeons perform cataract operations, and for injection intoarthritic joints to aid movement. It is estimated that 30 millionpatients around the world have been treated with some form ofhyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid has now largely replaced collagenas the favourite filler of UK cosmetic experts. This is becauseit is more likely to be compatible with our bodies than collagen, and so people are less likely to be allergic to it and do notrequire a test prior to use.PERMANENT OR NON-RESORBABLE FILLERSThese are newer fillers that can give a longer lasting effect, oreven a permanent effect, and may be recommended in somecases by a practitioner.Lip expert: Rita RakusDR RITA Rakus, who has beendubbed “the lip queen of London”will be visiting the Beauty Oasis, justoff Grange Road in Darlington, onFriday, October 14.
