<strong>GENERAL</strong> <strong>PRACTICE</strong> <strong>RESIDENCY</strong> TRAINING PROGRAM IN DENTISTRYThe University of British Columbia and two <strong>UBC</strong>-affiliated teaching institutionsoffer positions in a one or two-year hospital based dental residency program(GPR) beginning in June of each year. The affiliated institutions are VancouverGeneral Hospital (VGH), a tertiary care facility and trauma center, and the B.C.Cancer Agency (BCCA), the center of oncological research, education and carefor the province.INTRODUCTIONThe VGH Oral Health Centre dental service and GPR program are integratedand provide essential services in the emergency department as well as handlingthe priority needs of admitted patients and medically complex patients referredfrom the community.VGH ORAL HEALTH CENTRE CLINICThe VGH Oral Health Centre is the operational hub for the GPR program and allaffiliated resident activities following an exciting and major reorganizationdesigned to optimize resident experience.The emphasis of the residency is on the provision of care to patients requiringthe uniqueness of a hospital environment. In turn, the GPR program is hospitalbasedand all resident activities relate to the evaluation and provision ofadvanced oral care to patients who are medically complex, hospitalized, havecomplex oral-dental problems outside the typical scope of community dentalpractice, and patients presenting to the VGH Emergency Department.At the VGH Oral Health Center each resident is assigned to an on-site VGH“Dental Hospitalist” specifically tasked with supervising, educating and offeringessential training tips in the Emergency Department, on the wards and in theambulatory clinic. In addition residents will participate in regularly scheduledoutpatient clinics including orofacial pain, oral mucosal disease, organ transplantsupport, complex prosthodontic reconstruction, endodontics and oral andmaxillofacial surgery.EMERGENCY ROOMResidents will attend to emergencies in the Emergency Department (ED) with thementoring of an experienced staff person who will be on-site for complex casesor if a procedure needs to be done. This is an unprecedented opportunity forresidents to experience the ED in a supported manner and will optimize thelearning experience.


COMMUNITY CLINICSDepending on the schedule, residents may attend a limited number of selectcommunity clinics to broaden skill sets, contribute to unique <strong>UBC</strong> affiliatedcommunity initiatives, and to help prepare for future practice in urban and ruralsettings.All community rotations have been revised and are fully mentored byexperienced on-site clinicians. The clinics have been pre-selected to offer thebest educational and training experiences and to help residents prepare forpotentially challenging future practice environments.Three residents per year may also be selected to participate in rotations toVietnam. This international experience will broaden the scope of learning toinclude an understanding of regional disease processes, treatment approachesand cultural competency.GPRs AND THE <strong>UBC</strong> GRADUATE SPECIALTY PROGRAMSResidents will have the opportunity to work with world-class faculty at the <strong>UBC</strong>dental school. Residents will rotate through specialty clinics within the <strong>UBC</strong>graduate dental specialty programs (endodontics, periodontics and orthodontics)working alongside graduate students in a well-mentored environment. Residentswill gain experience using specialized equipment including microscopes and<strong>UBC</strong>’s Cone Beam CT.OFF SERVICE MEDICAL ROTATIONSResidents will attend off service rotations in select medical specialties that mayinclude plastic surgery, ENT, anesthesiology, internal medicine and emergencymedicine. Residents will receive orientations to prepare for and enhance theseexperiences.OPERATING ROOMSResidents will spend time in the VGH and <strong>UBC</strong> hospital operating rooms (ORs)where they will have the opportunity to observe, assist and/or deliver supervisedcare to patients undergoing comprehensive general dental care delivered in theoperating room setting. Residents will have the opportunity to observe or assist inmajor elective maxillofacial reconstructive surgery and participate in emergencyOR procedures including incision and drainage of major face and neck infectionsas well as treatment of fractures, cysts and tumours.


ORIENTATION AND EDUCATIONAL COMPONENTSThe initial orientation period is rigorous and focused on bringing residents up tothe level required to function within the hospital environment. The curriculuminclude training in:history and physical examination (including heart, lung andabdomen)ordering and interpretation of blood and other lab testsordering and interpretation of CT scansmanaging orofacial infectionsappropriate antibiotic use (oral and IV)oncology careemergency caremanagement of dental alveolar traumahospital protocolsAdvanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).hands-on course on starting IVs.The ongoing educational opportunities throughout the year focus on practical andclinically relevant hospital based skills and activities. This includes resident orstaff seminars, grand rounds, morbidity and mortality rounds and casepresentations. There will also be monthly training and simulations in ACLS.Didactic lectures will be available on single drug IV sedation as well opportunitiesfor qualified residents to gain clinical experience in administration. While theresidency is not offering a set certification course for IV sedation it is possible fora highly motivated resident to become certified in single drug sedation. Thequalified resident would have to have outstanding clinical skills, pass the IVsedation examination, the ongoing ACLS megacode practical examinations andaccumulate the required number of qualifying cases.APPLICANTSApplicants to the second-year General Practice Residency (Resident II) mustbe enrolled in or have completed a one-year GPR/Internship or have hadconsiderable experience in hospital dentistry connected with their privatepractice or academic position. The second year training will be focused in oneor more areas of interest selected by the resident from Oral and MaxillofacialSurgery, Oral Medicine, Geriatric <strong>Dentistry</strong>, Orthodontics, Community OralHealth and/or Oral Oncology. This position carries the designation of “ChiefResident”, involves some administrative duties in the residency program andrequires the provision of leadership to the first year residents.


BACKGROUND ON VGH and BCCAThe Vancouver Hospital and Health Sciences Centre – VGH Site is the majortertiary referral centre for the Province of British Columbia with 1303 beds,including 198 extended care beds, 20 short-term assessment beds and 55discharge planning beds. The hospital’s major services are bone marrow andsolid organ transplant, trauma and spinal cord injury, placement of cardiac andorthopedic implants, renal dialysis, and the management of medically andimmune compromised patients.The B.C. Cancer Agency’s Vancouver Cancer Centre consists of an outpatientclinic that registers 5700 new cancer patients per annum and a hospital unitcontaining 20 beds. There are three fully equipped dental operatories and a fullyequipped maxillofacial prosthetics clinic. General anesthetic facilities areavailable in two operating rooms for both ambulatory and inpatient care. TheAgency provides a program of consultation, preventive, restorative andrehabilitative treatment to all registered patients whose need arises from canceror the treatment of cancer.ADMISSION REQUIREMENTSCandidates must satisfy the requirements of the College of Dental Surgeons ofB.C. for registration. Graduates of all Canadian and American dental schools areeligible to apply.Foreign dentists, other than U.S. trained graduates, must possess a certificateissued by the National Dental Examining Board of Canada and must meetimmigration requirementsThe General Practice Residency program is now underthe direction of Dr. Larry Goldstein, an Oral andMaxillofacial Surgeon. Applications may be obtained atwww.dentistry.ubc.ca, under education/postgraduateprograms.ACCOMMODATIONThere are no facilities for housing residents at any of the hospitals.REMUNERATION


The stipend for a Resident I is $48,565.20 per annum. When applicable, paymentper month is added for "on-call" services plus allowances for travel. Additionalbenefits include the provision of uniforms, 20 days of vacation (four weeks),medical, dental, extended health, on-call travel allowance, long-term disability,and life and malpractice insurance plans. All vacation requests must besubmitted in writing for approval.FEESThe residents selected are registered as graduate students in the Faculty of<strong>Dentistry</strong> and with the College of Dental Surgeons of B.C. for which separatefees are paid. Membership in the Professional Association of Residents isrequired. There is an ACLS course and textbook fee and a GPR program fee.APPLICATION AND INFORMATIONThe application forms and information sheets are available on the web site atwww.dentistry.ubc.ca under education/post-graduate.ENGLISH PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTSApplicants who received their dental degree from a school where English was notthe primary language of study must present evidence of proficiency in English.One of the following tests of English proficiency is acceptable:TOEFLThe minimum TOEFL score required is 580 paper-based or 93 internet-based,taken within twenty-four (24) months prior to the time of submission of theapplication. TOEFL score sheets must be sent directly from the EducationalTesting Centre in sealed and official envelopes. Photocopies of test scores arenot acceptable.IELTSA minimum overall band score of 6.5 is required with a minimum score of 6.0 ineach component of the academic (not general) IELTS test. IELTS score sheetsmust be sent directly from source in sealed and official envelopes.
