Page 12—<strong>Harby</strong> <strong>Newsletter</strong>, June 2013Gainsborough – Capital of Engl<strong>and</strong>Hard to imagine now, but Gainsborough’s place in history wasdefined a thous<strong>and</strong> years ago this July when it was brieflythe capital of Engl<strong>and</strong>. In 1003 Danish Prince Svein OttoHaraldsson began conquering territory in Engl<strong>and</strong>, defeatingthe armies of the English King Ethelred ‘The Unready’ whofled the country in 1013. The Anglo-Saxon English nobilityacknowledged Svein as King <strong>and</strong> he established his highoffice <strong>and</strong> Capital of Engl<strong>and</strong> at Gainsborough Castle, on thesite of the Old Hall, whilst his army encamped at ‘CastleHills’ at Thonock. So briefly, in late July 1013, Gainsboroughbecame the capital of Engl<strong>and</strong>.Svein was popularly known as Tiugeskaeg, meaning ‘Forkbeard’ after his long cleft beard <strong>and</strong>there’s a pub in Gainsborugh today called Sweyn Forkbeard. Despite his military successes<strong>and</strong> marvellous name, his reign was cut short as Svein was accidentally killed in February 1014when he was thrown from his horse. He was succeeded by his son King Canute who famouslytried to turn back the tide.Saturday Swap Coffee MorningA variety of unwanted items were brought forpeople to take away at the Saturday Swap.There was great interest in the book <strong>and</strong> DVDtable, with homewares, toys <strong>and</strong> gardeningequipment also being available.<strong>Newark</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Sherwood</strong> <strong>District</strong> <strong>Council</strong> funded a visitfrom the Energy Efficiency Mobile Exhibition.The next Saturday Swap Coffee Morning will be onSat. 28 th September
