CHAPTER 1 ENTERING A WORLD WITHOUT WIRES 11Why Wi-Fi Is ImportantThe 802.11 standard is important because millions of people all over the world areusing this standard. They use it to connect without wires to the Internet when theyare on the road and away from their home or office. They are also using 802.11 tocreate wireless networks in their homes and offices.Although Wi-Fi is only a few years old, it’s important because it provides an assuranceof compatibility for 802.11 devices. Each Wi-Fi device will “talk” to every otherWi-Fi device—and the Wi-Fi Alliance has certified that this is the case! (For moreinformation about the Wi-Fi Alliance, see the sidebar “The Wi-Fi Alliance” earlier inthis chapter.)The Wi-Fi Alliance makes the unequivocal statement that “Wi-Fi labeled equipmentwill work with any other piece of wireless networking gear that also has the Wi-Filogo.” Without the assurance of Wi-Fi compatibility, you would probably go madtrying for interoperability in a world of widely divergent wireless devices.Every device with the Wi-Fi logo is also tested for functionality and durability by anindependent testing laboratory. Finally, the Wi-Fi Alliance, and the companies that form the Alliance, are engagedin an ongoing effort to expand wireless standards, and make wireless computing amore secure and enjoyable experience.Understanding Wi-Fi NetworksYou’re on the road and you’ve found a location with a Wi-Fi broadcast device thatyour mobile computer can talk to. A Wi-Fi broadcast device is variously referred toas an access point, an AP, or a hotspot. With your access point located, you’re ready to sit right down, establish a wirelessconnection, and start reading your email and surfing the Web, right? Not so fast, partner. It’s really important to understand that being able to “talk” with a wireless accesspoint just means that you can “talk” with a wireless access point. It doesn’t meanthat you can connect to the Internet unless the wireless access point is itself connectedto the Internet. So if Starbucks or whoever wants to provide you with the chance to surf on their turfwhile you sip that latte, Starbucks needs to provide an Internet connection.Generally, this connection is wired, and uses a cable or DSL (digital subscriber line)telephone line for high speeds.A high-speed wire brings the Internet to the location, and a Wi-Fi access pointbroadcasts the wireless Internet connectivity to wireless devices (in technogeek-speak,the wireless devices are generically referred to as clients).
