FLOATING POWER PLANTS

THE POWER SOLUTION THAT TAKES FLEXIBILITY ONE STEP FURTHERA common denominator for all Wärtsilä’s powerplants is world-class flexibility. Our powerplants are based on diesel, gas or dual-fuelengines that are designed to run on varioustypes of liquid and gaseous fuels. They allowfor switching fuels according to cost andavailability. The plants’ output can also easily bemultiplied by installing more units in parallel.Options such as steam production, combined cycle and desalination provideeconomic optimisation.Controlled combustion and an unequalledelectrical efficiency form the foundation forthe environmental friendliness of all Wärtsiläplants. When required, various NO X andSO X reduction options are available, makingthese plants comply with the most stringentenvironmental standards anywhere in theworld.Uniquely fast starts, stops and loadramps ensure fast load following. You canrely on an uninterrupted power supply andexcellent energy efficiency in any use – frompeaking power to baseload.Still, we have even more to offer. Wärtsiläfloating power plants take flexibility onestep further; not even the location is a fixedparameter anymore. In an ever-changingworld Wärtsilä provides you with solutionsthat anticipate challenges and help youmaster the situation, come what may.2

BARGING IN NICE AND EASYThe Haripur floating power plant inBangladesh took part in improving the criticalpower situation then prevailing in the country.Site work was minimal since no onshorefuel tanks were required. The engines arecooled with onboard radiators. The plantwas commissioned as an engineering, procurement and construction contract withNECP Haripur Ltd.Electrical output148.6 MWeEngines9 x Wärtsilä 18V46Delivered 2001THE REIGN OF THE SULTANLa Sultana del Este was ordered byEmpresa Generadora de Electrididad Haina,S.A. in the Dominican Republic. Wärtsilä’ssolution featured operational commitment, environmentally advanced performanceand highly efficient thermoelectric powergeneration operating with heavy fuel oil.Electrical output148.6 MWeEngines9 x Wärtsilä 18V46Delivered 2001THE DOCTORS THAT STEERCLEAR OF HURRICANESA survivor of many hurricanes, Dr Bird II issafely moored next to its older counterpartDr Bird I in the Jamaican bay. This is thefirst power barge that Wärtsilä designedfrom scratch in order to satisfy the ownersrequirements on fuel storage capacity, andeasy operation and maintenance. Dr Bird isa powerful lifesaver, providing electricity forJamaica’s national grid.Electrical output123.5 MWEngines8 x Wärtsilä 12V463 x Wärtsilä 18V46Delivered 1994 and 20054

THE POWER TIGERS OF BANGLADESHThe Khulna power plants are equipped with nineteen Wärtsilä 32liquid fuel generating sets, nine for Tiger I and ten for Tiger III. Allof the equipment was designed and constructed for operation inextreme site conditions, at high temperatures and in sea water. The floating baseload power plant was designed to burn heavyfuel oil as the main fuel, with light fuel oil as a standby fuel. When natural gas becomes available at the site, the plant can beconverted to operate on gas with a liquid pilot fuel.Electrical output110 MWEngine type 9 x Wärtsilä 18V32and 10 x 18V32Delivered 1997ALWAYS NEW, GOLDEN OPPORTUNITIES IN SIGHTThe barge-mounted plant in Papua New Guinea is equipped withWärtsilä 20V32 engines operating on heavy fuel oil. The customer is LihirGold Limited, a leading global gold company, and the power plant provideselectricity to its Lihir Island gold mine. Since the power plant is an interimsolution to the company’s power needs for the site, the power plant ismounted on a barge so that it can later be moved to another location whenno longer needed at Lihir Island.Electrical output71.4 MWEngines8 x Wärtsilä 20V32Delivered 2011A PIONEER IN ITS PRIMESeaboard’s Estrella Del Norte power barge in the DominicanRepublic has been a continuous success story for a good 20years. By introducing the latest technological improvementsavailable, Wärtsilä has maintained the heavy fuel oil plant’sposition as one of the most reliable power plants in the country. With an expected lifespan of 30–35 years, the barge enginesshould be able to produce a total of 10 million MWh before theirretirement.Electrical output40 MWEngines5 x Wärtsilä 18V322 x Wärtsilä 16V32Delivered 19905
