Wärtsilä X40The Wärtsilä X40 is a marine low-speedengine designed for providing excellentfuel consumption features and operationalflexibility. This is attributed to the provencommon-rail injection system which canbe considered as the most advanced forthis engine category. Wärtsilä has over adecade’s experience from common-railinjection technology, making the WärtsiläX40 the optimum choice for handysizevessels that focus on efficiency. The Wärtsilä X40 is a marine dieselengine with a 400 mm cylinder bore. Thepower output is in the range of 4,550 to9,080 kW and the engine is available in5–8 cylinder configurations.TYPICAL APPLICATION AREASThe Wärtsilä X40 is the optimum choicefor handysize vessels, such as chemical/product tankers, bulk carriers, containerfeeders and LPG carriers. This new engine offers fuel consumptionbenefits of up to 3% compared with aconventional mechanical main engine, depending on the sailing profile.OPERATIONAL FEATURESThe Wärtsilä X40 offers high efficiency due tothe high stroke-to-bore ratio. Wärtsilä’s wellproven electronically controlled common-railtechnology plays a key role in enabling shipowners to reduce fuel costs, mainly throughthe flexibility of the fuel injection and exhaustvalve operations. A unique feature of Wärtsilälow-speed electronically controlled enginesis the possibility to control each fuel injectorseparately. This flexibility results in lowerfuel consumption across the entire operatingrange, especially at low and part loads. Inaddition, different engine tunings are availablein order to meet specific requirementsaccording to the customers’ particularneeds (standard, delta and low load). Otheradvantages of this technology include stablelow running speeds (down to 12% of nominalspeed), smokeless operation, and improvedcontrol of exhaust emissions. For cylinderlubrication, an oil feed rate of 0.6 g/kWh canbe achieved.ENVIRONMENTAL COMPLIANCEThe engine is fully compliant with IMO TierII requirements. It can also be equippedwith a SCR catalyst to meet IMO Tier III NO Xemission levels, and a scrubber to reduce SO Xemissions to 0.1% – even with high sulphurfuels. The introduction of the EEDI indexalso puts an emphasis on CO 2 emissionsand total vessel efficiency. The internalengine efficiency of Wärtsilä X40, and thepossibility to apply various Power Take Off(PTO) arrangements for onboard electricityproduction, make it easy for shipyards to meetthese new requirements. Thanks to Wärtsilä’scommon-rail technology, the engine has novisible smoke at any load.TOTAL COST OF OWNERSHIPMinimum total cost of ownership can beachieved by low engine and operational costsduring the lifetime of the engine. The WärtsiläX40 is designed for exceptional reliabilityand for long periods of maintenance-freeoperation. It also allows extended TimeBetween Overhaul (TBO) of the criticalcomponents, to as much as 5 years. Theservice-friendly design will reduce downtime,

maintain vessel operation and cut operating costs. Together withCondition Based Maintenance (CBM) and service agreements, theoverhaul interval could be even further extended, thus minimizingmaintenance costs and maximizing the revenue-earning capability ofthe vessel.The key benefi ts of the Wärtsilä X40 include:• Economical fuel consumption over the whole operating range/lowcylinder oil consumption• Advanced proven common-rail concept for high performance• Long overhaul intervals (5 years)• Reduced CO 2 , SO X and NO X emissions, off ering shipyards excellentopportunities to fulfi l EEDIWÄRTSILÄ X40 CASE STUDYHandysize product tanker route: Black Sea – MediterraneanRoundtrip comparisonWÄRTSILÄ X40Main data:Cylinder borePiston strokeSpeedMean effective pressure at R1Piston speedFuel specifi cation:Fuel oil 700 cSt/50°CISO-F 8217:2005, category ISO-RMK700Cyl.5678DimensionsmmRated power, principal dimensions and weightsOutput in kW at146 rpm 124 rpmLength AmmR1 R2 R3 R45 6756 8107 9459 0804 5505 4606 3707 2804 8255 7906 7557 7204 5505 4606 3707 280IMO Tier II5 0505 7506 4507 150400 mm1770 mm124–146 rpm21.0 bar8.6 m/sWeighttonnes109125140153B C D E F* G2 590 950 6 335 1 660 7 700 1 425SP-EN-DBAC215318 / 05.2012 Bock´s Office / ArkmediaSailing profi le• Laden leg: 15.0 knots/85%engine load• Ballast leg: 12.5 knots/50%engine loadVoyage assumptions• Loading: Constantza• Discharging: Tarragona• Distance: 1,698 nm/legFUEL COSTS PER ROUNDTRIP (kUSD)End pointStart pointBrake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) in g/kWhFull loadRating point R1 R2 R3 R4BMEP, bar 21.0 16.8 21.0 19.8BSFC Standard Tuning 175 169 175 173Part load, % of R1 85 70 85 70 60Tuning variant Standard Standard Delta Delta Low-LoadBSFC 171.4 171.0 170.7 169.5 167.2* Standard piston dismantling height, can be reduced with tilted piston withdrawal.160100% 97%kUSD12080400Mechanical main engine(Reference)HFO price = 650 USD/tonneWärtsilä X40, 7 cylinderWÄRTSILÄ ® is a registered trademark.
