AMCS Bulletin 5 ReprintON MORE EARTHWORMS FROM MEXICAN CAVESG. E. Gates251 Silver Road, Bangor, Maine 04401The proportion of autochthonous, Mexican, megadrilespecies known only from types secured in caveshas been mentioned at least once in previous publications(Gates, 1971). The number of types for eachspecies has been small. A dedicated band of spelunkersnow has turned up another new species and in anice series of 20 well preserved specimens. It is especiallyfortunate that the series is long enough to enablea description of neural components in the circulatorysystem, a set of blood vessels different from anyhitherto recorded for earthworms.ACANTHODRILIDAEEodrilus albidus, nom. nov.P. O. Ljungstrom has kindly informed me thatEodri/us a/bus Gates 1970, was preoccupied byAcanthodri/us a/bus Beddard 1895, later transferredto Notiodri/us Michaelsen 1899, thence to Eodri/usMichaelsen 1907, in 1913 back into Acanthodri/usagain, with a relapse into a reconstituted Eodri/us in1937, presently, according to one author, in Dip/otremaas a subgenus of Notiodri/us! The Americanendemic has belonged in none of those classical andneoclassical congeries but until such information asis necessary to enable rational assignment of thespecies to a properly defined genus, the former genericname is retained though it perhaps should be enclosedin quotation marks. There does seem to be a need fora convention about use of generic names strictly nolonger available that cannot be replaced until muchadditional information (that often cannot be expectedfor an indefinite period, perhaps of years) is finallyavailable. Further "orphaned species" are to be expectedas inadequately characterized type species arereexamined in conditions that will allow genera to beproperly defined rather than as in the classical system(and suggested revisions) by relatively unimportantpairs of simple key characters along with derogationof much conservative somatic anatomy.Eodri/us sp.Cueva de la Capilla, 13.5 km NW Gomez Farias,Tamaulipas, 11 January 1971, 0-5-0.
