Local Implementation Plan YUENDUMU24Published 30 September 2011SAFECOMMUNITIESHighlightsThe Yuendumu Police Station has five officersand is responsible for patrolling an area of about120,000 km 2 , assisted by a night patrol service.The community is keen for laws to be enforcedso that children and families are safe.Community strengths••Yuendumu has a men’s cooling-off house, anda women’s refuge managed by the YuendumuWomen’s Centre Aboriginal Corporation.••Mt Theo Centre provides substance abuseeducation, intervention and counselling,and diversionary programs.Desired community outcomes••Laws are enforced, ensuring children andfamilies are safe.••Reduce grog and drug abuse.••Street lighting, better roads and roadsignage to ensure children and familiesare safe at night.••Children and families are safe movingaround the community.••Locals are equipped to respond to localemergencies and disasters.Commitments••The Yuendumu Mediation and Justice Group,made up of eight Indigenous elders andrespected people, aims to help strengthenfamily relationships and develop strategiesthat promote community safety and addressfamily violence.••The Yuendumu Youth Centre providessnooker and other diversionary activities.The community is well known for its sportingtalents, and an undercover basketball courthas been built.The community and all levels of governmentare committing to a number of actions toaddress the community’s priorities, including:••Develop Alcohol Management Plan.••Maintain and improve street lightingas required.••Development of appropriate emergencyresponse strategies.Details of Yuendumu’s safety priorities and actionsare in Schedule A.••A family wellbeing program provides projectsto change behaviour and attitudes ofindividuals and the community.
