Poetry Workshop: Reading, Writing, and
Revision
Tuition: $259 CEUs: 1.6
Instructor: Alexa Selph, MA in English, Poet and Freelance Editor
8 sessions: Mon, Sep 24–Nov 12 / 7:00–9:00 p.m.
All art, whether poem, play, or painting, is shaped by attention to
craft and tradition. This class will focus on the elements that make
a poem a poem—form, meter, metaphor, and musicality. You will
learn how regular reading of poems by established poets strengthens
your writing. Most important, as the poet Stephen Dobyns has said,
“the poem exists not in that first burst of creativity, but in revision.”
We’ll talk about strategies that can elevate the process of revision
from a chore to a joy. There will be exercises and assignments designed
to inform and inspire. Textbook not inlcuded in tuition. No
previous background in literature required. Textbooks: The Discovery
of Poetry: A Field Guide to Reading and Writing Poems and
Next Word, Better Word: The Craft of Writing Poetry
to have on hand and how to work with them. Practice how to “mark
up” a document clearly and how to handle documents that are “delivered”
electronically. Tuition includes lunch. Please have with you
Principles of Dramatic Writing
Tuition: $259 CEUs: 12.0
Instructor: Vicki Armour-Hileman
7 sessions: Tue, Oct 30–Dec 11 / 7:30–9:30 p.m.
In this course, students will explore the principles that underlie all
dramatic writing—plays, TV scripts and movies. At its most basic,
dramatic writing is about telling a story through scenes. This course
will take students through a process for finding the heart of a story
and crafting scenes that will surprise and move the audience. Because
the scene is a fundamental building block of all stories, this course will
also help writers of fiction or narrative nonfiction improve their scenewriting
ability and sense of story structure. Textbook not included in
tuition. Recommended textbooks: Story: Substance, Structure, Style
and the Principles of Screenwriting and Writing for Story.
