Ipswich Grammar SchoolAnnual Report

VolleyballAUSTRALIAN VOLLEYBALL SCHOOLS CUP 2010In preparaon for the 2011 GPS season,Ipswich Grammar School Volleyball wasfortunate enough to have aended theAustralian Volleyball Schools Cup inMelbourne during early December 2010.This was the rst me we have sent a teamto this spectacular event. The AVSC is thelargest school sport event in the southernhemisphere with well over 4000 studentsparcipang last year. Having only oneYear 12 student, three Year 11 studentsand ve Year 10 students, we nominated in the Open BoysThird Division in which we fought very hard to secure asilver medal. This tournament was an awesome experiencefor these nine boys as well as myself, Mr Strathdee andMr Bur, and was an excellent opportunity for us to earnvaluable game experience leading into the GPS season.AVSC roster: Stuart Morrison, Hamish Strathdee, AlanHarrison, Curs Minns, Colby Cooke, Zachary Forsyth,Mahew Dayes, Nathaniel Smith, James Beveridge.TEAM REPORTI am proud to say that as a cohort of 13 teams this year,IGS Volleyball had six teams nishing in the top three withintheir divisions! We had a good season, however our win/loss percentage was down 10 per cent from last season’s62.7 per cent to 52.9 per cent, pung us in an aggregateh place overall in GPS Volleyball for the season.YEAR 8Having had 60 boys trial for a place in these teams, therewas a big group of players to choose from and eventhough we were able to select many ne volleyballers, it isunfortunate that there were many who were not successfulin their trial. Mr Horridge coached the 8As again this yearand with outstanding performances from Sebasan Kylaars,Alistair Snow, Brodie Baeumler and others, as well as theinjecon of Josh Hooton from the Bs team, they were ableto secure equal second place for the season. The 8B and8C teams coached by Mrs Piy and Mr Amos respecullyhad excellent seasons, claiming outright rst place in eachof their divisions. The 8B MVP for the season was TomPearson, with Jacob Sanderson namedMost Improved. The 8C MVP honour wasawarded to Jack Ausn, and Most Improvedwas Jamie Stephens.YEAR 9Aer having done so well in 2010 – thisyear’s 9B and 9C teams did not lose a matchlast year – our Year 9 cohort was expectedto do very well in 2011. We struggled to ndconsistent form this season, however MVP performancesfrom Daniel Busch of the 9As, Harrison Harms of the 9Bs andEugene Ofori of the 9Cs and Most Improved performancesby Ethan Page, Raphael Vargas and Glen Beazley helped IGSwin many hard-fought sets. Mr Burt and Mr Maclean’s 9Asearned themselves equal fourth posion, while Mr Wiltonand Mr Trezise placed sixth and equal h respecully.YEAR 10Our 10A team coached by IGS Old Boy and former First VIplayer Finn Stagg performed very well this year against whatis always a strong division in GPS Volleyball. Consistentperformances by MVP Peau Vakauta andup-and-coming stars Joel Berry and TomFurminger helped the boys achieve a 4-3fourth place record for the season. MostImproved for the season was earned byPresco Fraser, who stepped up aer aninjury to starng seer Nicholas Muir.Mr Buereld’s 10Bs had an excellentseason, only losing one match and earningthemselves rst place. It is interesngto note that the match they lost this yearagainst ACGS is the only match they have lost in three years– that’s a 20-1 record for their GPS careers. MVP and MostImproved honours were earned by Mitch Cahill and SeanAdcock respecully. The 10Cs, coached by Mr Lightbody, achieved equal second place for the season despite havinga few players replaced partway through the season due toother commitments. MPV for the season was Ben Russeland Most Improved was Thomas Cochran.YEAR 11Mr King’s 11As had a shaky start to the year howevermanaged to win their last three matches in a row againstBBC, ACGS and NC, earning themselves equal sixth placeon the ladder. The MVP was Dhugald Snow and MahewDayes, having improved out-of-sight since 2010, earnedMost Improved honours. All of these boys played very wellthroughout the season and honourable menons must goto Tuni Leahy as well as Mitch Roeeler, who earned severalpoints at the net and saved many points with his passing. The 11Bs were coached by Mr Marsman and aer narrowlosses to BGS and TGS nished a very respecul equalsecond for the season. Chrisan del Casllo was voted teamMVP and Tom Walsh was named Most Improved.2nd VIStarng the season away from home against arguably theirstrongest opponents, our boys lost 19-25; 22-25 to BSHSand 14-25; 18-25 to BGS despite showing signs of cohesionand commied teamwork. Capably led by the acons ofjump-serving passer-hier Hamish Strathdee and the vocalencouragement of ulity Zac O’Meara, the team rallied intheir next three matches but could not get across the line, narrowly losing in three sets against TGS (13-15 in the nalset), BBC (12-15 in the nal set) and GregoryTerrace. They nally demonstrated theirtrue potenal with a convincing 2-0 resultagainst ACGS, followed by a 2-1 victory overNudgee College at the tail-end of the seasonto suggest the year was one of missedopportunies.Full roster: Hamish Strathdee Captain andMVP, Zac O’Meara Vice Captain and Best andFairest, Mitchell Anderson, Stuart Adcock,Jaeger Brodie, Brayden Currie, Jordin Gillen, Nic Hooper, NicRemmelt, Chris Ryan, Richard Schilt, Jacob Vandermolen.2011
