2 premier sleeve valvesIntroduction1. Premier Valves has for the past 20 yearshad the backing of Von Roll, who has beenmanufacturing Sleeve Valves for more than 70years. The current design of the IES/Von RollSleeve Valve is a combination of efforts by VonRoll (Switzerland), the Department of WaterAffairs and Forestry (South Africa) and IESValves (South Africa). Sleeve Valve ConstructionClosedOpenFigure 2.1: SmallSleeve Valveon Dam Outlet(HydraulicallyOperated2.1 Small Sleeve Valves (100 - 300)Small Sleeve valves have a stainless steel body and an aluminiumbronze sleeve. Linkages are 3CR12 (or stainless steel can bespecified). All dissimilar metals are insulated to limit any galvanicattack.Sealing of the sleeve valve is achieved by a front seal and two rearseals. The front seal is a large o-ring clamped in position by astainless steel clamping ring to prevent it being removed by highvelocity water. The rear seals are smaller o-rings housed in the valvebody (see figure 2.3). The use of o-rings allows users to purchasespare seals virtually anywhere.The aluminium bronze sleeve is greased between the back seals (seefigure 2.3).Small sleeve valves can be operated hydraulically (as shown in figure2.1), manually (from a pedestal or as specified by the customer)or by Electric Actuator. Alternate means of operation can beaccommodated, please submit details of your requirements to ourEngineering Department.Position indication can be provided by means of a cable and weightarrangement or by means of an electronic positioning system. If thevalve is operated hydraulically the electronic positioning system canbe mounted inside the hydraulic cylinder. For cast in-situ hoods, pleasesubmit details of your requirements to ourEngineering Department. Hoods can bedesigned with removable sections or asrequired. Figure 3.1 shows a cast in-situhood with a removable section. Hoods arefabricated in 3CR12 corrosion resistantsteel (stainless steel can be specified).4. 4. Corrosion ProtectionThe sleeve valve body is paintedwith a polyamide cured epoxywhich overlaps the stainless steelportions and bronze welding onthe body ribs to ensure properprotection.
