New Staff & NewsIntroducing ... Sharon CarlHaving been involved with the College now for over 12 yearsI have seen many exciting changes as the College hasdeveloped programs, buildings and staff.Initially utilising the Distance Educa tion unit, I educated myown children for a few years before transferring into the DayCollege. At that point I began work at the College as aTeacher Aide. Today I am based in Administration where Ihave all of the fun jobs!Marketing and Finance. Some of my favourite activities include:Photog raphy, Newsletter and Year Bookcreation. Helping in Sick Bay. Talkingwith students. Helping staff.Things I like to think about:Why is the word “abbreviation“ such along word?Japanese Visit CancelledRiverside will not be hosting Japanesestudents in Term 3 as previouslyplanned. Due to Japanese government fundingchanges.CHANGING BUSES OR TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTSAny students who are booked for regular collection onbuses must advise their driver of any changes to theusual arrangements. If a phone call is not made or a letter brought to theoffice or driver, the usual arrangements will stand. For any further enquiries, please contactMrs Janita Shipp at the office.A very green fundraiserHow about this for a great idea!!!A Living Fundra iser. Veggie / herbsand growing kits! How much funwill this be ... Watching your ownplants grow and then eating them!Seeds sell for $4 a pa cket and growing kits sell for $6 eachpack. This is a simple hea lthy fundraiser that the Collegecan use towards our Fiji Mission. Seeds and growing kitscan be purchased from Reception. Further details aboutthe seeds and the fundraising concept, please visit :http://www.livingfundraisers.com.au/veggie_seeds.htmlThis year we have students and staff who suffer from allergiesand they must be very careful not to come into contact withcertain foods. Therefore we request that where possible, thefollowing foods: Eggs, Peanuts and Seafood be avoided atthe College. We value the well-being of each one inour Riverside community, let’s make theCollege a safe place to be.Thank you!Year 12 DE Student returns from Student ExchangeLanguages have always interested me, so spending a year inBelgium with a host family, learning about the culture, people and language was one of the best things I have done.In 2009, I chose to go on a student exchange program toBelgium, the main reason being because I wanted to lea rnFrench, but didn’t want to go to France. I spent a year overthere and met the most amazing people and had the time ofmy life!It was pretty tough to begin with, wha t with jet lag, foreignpeople, and an unknown language. But as the weeks wentby, I slowly began to feel more comfortable. What amusedme the most, was that after six months or so, when youcould speak fairly fluently, strangers would hardly know youwere foreign and were often surprised when you told themyou were Australian!Going to another country and being away from everythingyou know gives you the chance to discover new things. Andnot just about another culture. I learnt more about people ingeneral, about the world, the intricacies of language andmost importantly, about myself. I gained a lot moreself‐confidence and independence, especially as I had to relyupon myself to get things done. All in a ll, 2009 was a fantastic year for me. If you wantto do something like this, I’d definitely encourage you. It’ssomething you’ll never regret. There are plenty of exchangeprograms such as WEP, Rotary and AFS, and you can choosewhere you want to go and for how long. It’s a rewardingexperience and will open doors to you.Happy journeys! Au revoir! Our College Display/Schoolwork Section at theFraser Coast Show was“Highly Commended”Staff & News10Please advise the College if you change your emailaddress
