The Preparation of the Sermonhad finished his training in the well-known seminary he had attended, this man had immediately prepared a series of sermons on varioustheological and doctrinal subjects. He had a sermon on justification, another on sanctification, another on providence, another on eschatologyand so on. In other words he started with a subject, and thenlooked for a text through which he could deal with it. But what he wasactually doing was to give lectures on 'justification by faith' and so on.That is what I mean by not preaching on subjects.I venture to go a step further, and to expose myself to some criticism,by saying that on the whole I do not believe in preaching througha catechism. There are those for whom I have great respect who dothis regularly; but I suggest that this is not a wise procedure, chieflyfor the reason that it tends to produce a theoretical attitude to theTruth, an over-intellectual attitude to the Truth. Iwould place this under the heading of instruction and deal with it ina series of lectures. But, still better, it seems to me, is to tell the peopleto read and study the Catechism for themselves and then consider ittogether in discussion groups.I say all this because I believe, as I have been indicating, that inpreaching the message should always arise out of the Scripturesdirectly and not out of the formulations of men, even the best men. After all, these catechisms were ,roduced by men and men who wereconcerned to emphasise certain things in their peculiar historical situation, over against certain other teachings and attitudes. At their best, therefore, they tend to be incomplete, they tend to have a particularemphasis; and therefore they tend to leave out certain things. But myfinal argument against preaching through the Catechism is that thesame object can be achieved by preaching from the Scriptures in theway that I have indicated; for after all,the catechisms derive from theScriptures. The function of a catechism, I would have thought, ultimately,is not to provide material for preaching; it is to safeguard thecorrectness of the preaching, and to safeguard the interpretations of187
