Originating in the early part of the nineteenth century,<br />

Cocktails began as a simple mix of spirits, sugar, water<br />

and bitters, but over the decades they have become far<br />

more inventive and extravagant. There are many methods<br />

of making cocktails; shaken and strained, stirred, layered,<br />

crushed, blended, fl amed and even thrown. Here are a<br />

few of our current favourites for you to try at home.<br />

T I P S<br />

Double Strain<br />

After shaking your cocktail, ensure there are no ice fragments in it by<br />

straining it twice. A professionally made cocktail is simultaneously poured<br />

through a ‘bar strainer’ placed directly on the shaker and a ‘fine strainer’<br />

into the glass. Two tea strainers work well if you don’t have a bar strainer.<br />

Great for a crystal clear Martini.<br />

Muddle<br />

To ‘muddle’ means to firmly press fruits, herbs or spices in the bottom of<br />

a glass to release their flavour. A good alternative to a bar muddler is<br />

to use the flat end of a rolling pin.<br />

Glass Chilling<br />

Before preparing a cocktail, simply fill the glass with ice to chill it. Discard<br />

the ice just prior to pouring the cocktail. Commonly used when preparing<br />

a Martini.<br />

Sugar Syrup<br />

Dissolve sugar in boiling water using equal parts sugar and water<br />

(e.g. 1 cup of sugar dissolved in 1 cup of boiling water). Use spring or<br />

filtered water to ensure the best taste. Caster sugar dissolves easiest.<br />

Pre-mixed sugar syrup can be purchased from any <strong>Dan</strong> Murphy’s store.<br />

Make a Shaker<br />

If you don’t have a cocktail shaker, a large, thick-walled jam jar is<br />

a great substitute.<br />

Keep it Cold<br />

Shaking a cocktail on ice for a full 20 seconds or until the cocktail shaker<br />

gets ‘iced up’ will ensure your cocktail will be super cold and provide<br />

optimal presentation.<br />

Baileys Chocolatini<br />

Ingredients<br />

50mL of Baileys Irish Cream<br />

10mL of Smirnoff Vodka<br />

5mL of chocolate liqueur<br />

Ice<br />

Method<br />

1. Drop several ice cubes into a shaker.<br />

2. Pour Baileys, Smirnoff Vodka and<br />

chocolate liqueur over the ice.<br />

3. Shake together.<br />

4. Strain into a chilled martini glass.<br />

Domaine de Canton is an infusion<br />

of Cognac, ginger, herbs and<br />

spices, honey, vanilla and<br />

ginseng. Perfect on its own,<br />

with soda or in any cocktail.<br />

Half a fresh lime (cut into 4 wedges)<br />

Method<br />

1. Squeeze and drop lime wedges<br />

into an old fashioned (short) glass.<br />

2. Add sugar and stir until sugar dissolves.<br />

3. Add Sagatiba, Domaine de Canton<br />

and ice.<br />

4. Stir and serve.<br />

Baileys Iced Latte<br />

Ingredients<br />

50mL Baileys Irish Cream<br />

25mL shot of coffee<br />

25mL milk<br />

A teaspoon of sugar<br />

Ice cubes<br />

Method<br />

1. Mix the ice, Baileys, coffee, milk<br />

and sugar.<br />

2. Stir it well and pour into a tall<br />

latte glass.<br />

3. Add cream on top of the cocktail and<br />

sprinkle with chocolate shavings.<br />

Tips<br />

Garnish your<br />

chocolate shavings<br />

or chocolate flake.<br />

If you don’t have<br />

chocolate then try a<br />

sprinkling of cocoa powder or hot<br />

chocolate powder.<br />

Cointreau Blush<br />

Ingredients<br />

30mL Cointreau<br />

Pink grapefruit juice<br />

Soda water<br />

Fresh lime juice<br />

Method<br />

1. Pour Cointreau into a tall glass.<br />

2. Add a squeeze of fresh lime.<br />

3. Top with pink grapefruit juice and<br />

a dash of soda water.<br />

4. Serve with ice in a tall glass.<br />

White Lady<br />

Ingredients<br />

20mL Cointreau<br />

40mL Gin<br />

10mL lemon juice<br />

into a cocktail shaker.<br />

2. Stir 3 times clockwise and<br />

1 anti-clockwise.<br />

3. Place ice in tumbler glass and<br />

pour through a strainer.<br />

6 lime wedges<br />

Method<br />

1. Pour Wild Turkey over ice<br />

in a large glass tumbler.<br />

2. Squeeze 6 lime wedges.<br />

3. Top up with ginger beer<br />

or dry ginger ale.<br />

LYCHEE MARTINI<br />

1. Add ingredients to cocktail shaker.<br />

2. Shake with ice and fine strain into<br />

3. Garnish with a lychee.<br />

1. Mix all the ingredients except the<br />

ginger beer in a jug.<br />

2. Add cubed ice to chill and garnish<br />

with slices of blood orange, fresh<br />

mint leaves and assorted berries.<br />

3. Top up with ginger beer and serve.<br />
