Emotional health is just as important as physical health. Loss from miscarriage, ectopicpregnancy, stillbirth, or newborn death is unexpected and can cause a wide rangeof emotions including shock, helplessness, guilt, and grief. Memorial Health Centercoordinated its 11th annual “A Walk to Remember,” dedicated to the memory of infantslost during pregnancy or infancy. It entails a 30-minute walk, a brief memorial, and timefor discussion, emotional healing, and support.Yikes! 8% abnormal.Never ever forgotten.Prostate cancer kills one manevery 19 minutes. As the babyboomer population ages overthe next ten years, the number ofmen dying from prostate cancer willincrease dramatically. For this reason,Memorial Health Center is dedicatedto helping detect this cancer in its earlystages when it is often curable.Since 1996, Memorial Health Centerhas held a free prostate cancerscreening for area men. This year, 222men participated in the free screening, which included a prostate-specificantigen (PSA) test of the blood anda digital rectal exam (DRE). Resultsfrom the screening revealed 18 men(8% of those screened) had eitherabnormal PSA scores or abnormalDRE results.Because early prostate cancer has nosymptoms, screening tests like the PSAand DRE are the most common meansof detecting the presence of prostatecancer. Abnormal results indicatethe need for additional testing todetermine if cancer is present. The 18 men whose results wereabnormal were contacted by phonewithin two days of the screening;the remaining men received a letter.Memorial Health Center laboratory, emergency services, infection control, and marketing staff planned andexecuted this year’s free prostatecancer screening, ultimately devotinghundreds of staff hours to ensure itssuccess.Especially important to the screening’ssuccess was the generous participationof urologists Dr. David Bluesteinand Dr. Roy Brandell of the UrologySpecialists of Wisconsin, who donatedtheir time and patient care to the event,as well as the participation of severalvolunteers who kept the screeningorganized and running on time.“Every year over 230,000 men arediagnosed with prostate cancer andover 30,000 die,” Dr. Bluestein says.“It is my hope that lives will have beensaved with this program.”COMMuNITY BENEFITs & ANNuAL REpORT | JuLY 2008 - JuNE 2009 | 5

Remembering thosewho made a difference.Edwin DammPleased with the care he received atMemorial Health Center, Edwin Dammof Stetsonville remembered the local healthcare organization in his will. MemorialHealth Center humbly accepted a checkfrom his estate for $37,455 this past fiscal year.According to Elmer Balko, Damm’s close friend and financialassociate, Damm received his health care at a differentorganization until an open house held at Memorial HealthCenter convinced him to make a switch. He and his wifewere impressed with the services offered and changed theirhealth care to Memorial Health Center.Providing financial support to organizations and causeshe believed in was a way of life for Damm. He will beremembered best for his belief in the importance of highereducation.“Edwin was a generous man,” says Balko. “He wanted tohelp other people. He wanted to share what he was ableto accomplish in his life with the community.”Like Damm, Memorial Health Center is committed to thewell-being of the people living in the communities it serves.Damm passed away August 10 at the age of 94.Walther Meyer, MDDr. Walther Meyer was recruited as aphysician to Memorial Health Center(then known as the Medford Clinic-Hospital) by his father in 1947. Hisassistance in Medford was to be temporaryuntil a new doctor could be found. But, more than sixtyyears later, he was still caring for the people of Medfordand its surrounding area.Dr. Meyer was one of five individuals who took action toform a non-profit hospital corporation for the MedfordClinic-Hospital in 1958. He was also a key figure in thedevelopment of medical services for the new MemorialHospital of Taylor County in 1962 (later renamed MemorialHealth Center).By the time Dr. Meyer retired from his Memorial HealthCenter clinical practice in June 1998, he delivered 6,719babies (exceeding Medford’s population by 2,000), spanningfour generations! ⎯ But he never retired from medicine. In addition to doing consulting work and making housecalls when circumstances warranted, he continued hisgeriatric medical practice treating a number of MemorialNursing & Rehab Center residents on a weekly basis. He alsoremained active in providing the community with educationabout nutrition and wellness.Dr. Meyer enjoyed people; he enjoyed caring for them. Hisdedication could be described as exceeding the standard ofexcellence.Dr. Walther “Walt” William Meyer was born in May 1922 inMedford to the late George F. and Irma M. (Walther) Meyer. He died at the age of 86 on March 30, 2009.26 | MEMORIAL HEALTH CENTER | An Aspirus Partner
