P. garciamarquezi belongs to the “fasciatus-group”, whose members share the distinctive colour pattern as was originally described by Linnaeus (1766) for P. fasciatus: “black and white stripes on each side. Abdomen white. All fins sprinkled with black spots”. The unique feature of this group, as was mentioned by Linnaeus, is the series of dark vertical bars distributed along the sides, that extend down onto the ventral portion of the body, and are accompanied by pale bars. This condition is shared by P. fasciatus (Linnaus 1766), P. punctifer (Castelnau 1855) and P. “fasciatum-Orinoco”, the last now recognized as a new species. In this group the cranial fontanel is short, not reaching the anterior part of the supraoccipital process. Table 2.
