coracoid process not developed; lateral process of the weberian apparatus with a broad notch<br />

between vertebra 4 and 5; transverse process of the fourth, fifth and sixth vertebra fused to the<br />

weberian apparatus with a flat shape; the canaliculi of the cephalic lateral line extremely<br />

ramified; hyomandibular and metapterigoid separated, with the quadrate forming the border of<br />

the upper ride of hyomandibular arch. Mental barbels short, the internal pair not reaching a<br />

vertical line through the eye, the external pair not reaching the pectoral origin.<br />

The general appearance is shown in the figure 2 and measurements are presented in table 1.<br />

Pseudoplatystoma garciamarquezi is a large species surpassing 1500 mm standard length<br />

(Dahl 1971), the holotype is 759 mm SL. Body elongated and subcylindrical. Body cross<br />

section at the level of the dorsal subcylindrical with the belly flat, becoming compressed<br />

laterally at the caudal peduncle. Ventral profile straight from the lower jaw to the caudal<br />

peduncle. Dorsal profile straight from the posterior part of the dorsal fin to the base of caudal<br />

fin.<br />
