Aboriginal and TorresStr ait Islander Public ArtThe Kaurna people are the Aboriginalpeople of the Adelaide Plains whosecountry spans from Crystal Brook andPort Wakefi eld across the AdelaidePlains to the southern tip of Cape Jervis.Mudlangga (the Lefevre Peninsula) andYertabulti (Port Adelaide) areas belongedto the Wirra Kaurna group who wouldcamp especially along the Port Riverduring the summer months and thentravel across the Port Adelaide Enfi eldarea up to the hills during the winter.As Uncle Lewis O’Brien, a local Eldersays, “the Kaurna’s strong spiritualattachment to the land is understoodthrough stories of the ‘dreaming’ whicharen’t just fairy tales; they speak aboutour country, our law and our knowledge”.It is this intangible cultural and spiritualknowledge that has defi ned anddetermined places of cultural signifi cance;in the environmental, sensory and culturallandscapes of the Kaurna people in theCouncil region and is refl ected in thePublic Art which we are proud to display.Public Art is a striking way of reclaimingAboriginal and Torres Strait Islanderpeople’s ‘spirit of place’ in today’surban landscape.
