That led to the idea of building a “roll on, rolloff” ship able to carry passengers as well as everytype of cargo, including general merchandise, farmimplements, wool and livestock.Plans for such a ship were drawn up in Britain andEvans Deakin Ltd in Brisbane won the contract to buildthe M V Troubridge, named after the lighthouse onTroubridge Shoal. It cost £1.3 million ($2.6m) to build, was 290 feet (88m) long, 50 feet (15m) wide and 1996gross tonnes. The Troubridge had a lateral thrust bowpropeller and twin rudders, which enabled it to berthstern first without tug assistance. The Troubridge was officially welcomed in PortAdelaide on 7 November 1961, with a ceremonial tripdown the Port River and a new cargo terminal openedin Leadenhall Street. The ship left for its maiden voyageto Kangaroo Island and Port Lincoln the following day.The Adelaide Steamship Company had purchased 18prime movers, 88 trailers and a 20 ton low loader fortractors, all of which were designed and built in SouthAustralia, and could be loaded on board the ship.Adapted from: Fitted for the Voyage: The AdelaideSteamship Co / Michael Page.Value those dusty old treasuresAntique expert Paul Bartlett brings his extensiveknowledge of all things old to Semaphore Library from2-4pm on Sunday 6 November. It’s a chance to learn about antiques and collectablesand hear Paul tell you how that dusty old artefact maybe worth a mint.He will talk for around 30 minutes on antiques andcollectables before making himself available forvaluations, so bring along those personal treasuresto have them valued. The civic authorities of the chiefseaport bought a fine quarry 12 months ago for £2,300,and it is so situated that the heavy traffic must becarried over the Main North road. The Port Council isthoroughly up to date, and proposes to use tractionengines and trains, but the district council is candidlyopposed to them. The opposing interests, of course, are pretty substantial. There is the quarry, and the Port roads want the stone. The cost of railway carriage is definitely prohibitive, andworks out at 4/- a ton. The traction scheme is on a basisof 1/10, and the 2/2 extra makes just the differencebetween a good financial proposition and a bad one. What the difficulty really resolves itself into is: “Shouldany local governing body be allowed to throw a logacross the road of legitimate advance in transportation?”The district council made it clear that it did not wantthe traction engines in any shape or form. They wouldfrighten the horses, set fire to loads of hay while passingthem, and distribute sparks in the grass; in fact, werepositively dangerous to life and limb…the metalled roadwould not be wide enough to allow a wagon of hay anda traction train to pass with safety, and…the Dry Creekbridge would not stand the strain.Mr. C. C. Deland, of a Sydney firm that dealt in tractionengines, argued…the modern methods of transportationhad come to stay, and that people and horses andloads of hay would get used to the mechanical teamsas they had to motor cars. These witnesses made anappeal to commonsense and logic and not to prejudice.“You hold in the North Road the key to one of themain arteries of trade in South Australia’’ they said,“and by opposing our interests you are opposing theinterests of South Australia.” The whole effect of the PortCorporation’s pleading was that there was absolutelynothing to fear, and that was backed up by generousoffers to the district council in the way of cheap stone, widening the track and, indeed, putting down a newtrack altogether.Tuesday 14 November 1911 The Register(Adelaide, SA: 1901-1929)Port Adelaide Enfield Council comprises a Mayor and17 Councillors, distributed around seven wards that take in theDue dates for submissions:whole of the City. your communityAll aboard withCook’s EndeavourStep back in time to one of the great ages in exploringwhen the HMB Endeavour sails into Port Adelaide inFebruary on its first ever circumnavigation of Australia.Set up as a “floating museum”, the ship is a perfectreplica of Captain Cook’s famous vessel of discoveryand acclaimed as one of the world’s most accuratemaritime reproductions. It gives a rare and real glimpseinto the life of a sailor during Cook’s epic 1768 1771world voyage. The Endeavour’s home berth is at the Australian NationalMaritime Museum, which maintains the ship for thepublic to experience 18th-century square-rig voyagingand seamanship. This is its most ambitious voyage yet –setting sail in April 2011 to circumnavigate the country, visiting major and regional ports across Australia. It will arrive in Port Adelaide on 14 February, and beopen to the public from 16-23 February.“It gives you an amazing sense of history and whatit was really like on Cook’s discovery voyage, howthey lived, and ate, and worked,” says Museumspokeswoman Shirani Aththas. “There were 90 crew onboard for a three year voyage - it’s amazing they wereable to live at such close quarters in such conditions forsuch a long time.”South Australians will have the chance to inspect theship – including the crew’s quarters, where they sleptin hammocks hung closely together, and the moreluxurious cabins occupied by Cook and botanist JosephBanks. Volunteers are also wanted to act as guides(you’ll get full training) or to be overnight ship keepers, sleeping in the crew’s quarters and getting the chance togo on watch.Find out more at the Endeavour website:www.endeavourvoyages.com.auRecord-busting PortFestival weekendIt was a record-breaking weekend in Port Adelaide forthe third biennial Port Festival. Early figures estimatethat over 27,000 people flocked to the Port for the8-9 October festival, which featured over 50 events.“This is a tremendous example of the strong communityspirit we have here in Port Adelaide” said SpecialEvents Coordinator Matthew Rose. “The feedback fromattendees, residents, participants and local businesseshas been overwhelmingly positive.” Local cafes andpubs were bustling with customers all weekend and theSA Maritime Museum had its biggest ever weekend in its25 years of operation.Attendance at art galleries, markets, performances andfamily activities was strong, with many events bookingout. In turn, threeholes have been modified and a number of generalcourse improvements made.Golf course architects Crafter + Mogford Golf Strategies, together with the project team, golf professionalGary Masters and the Port Adelaide Enfield Council, developed the new design while Urban Superwayconstructed it.The design has introduced a par 5 with the course nowfeaturing additional interest for golfers plus better safety,an important consideration given the proximity ofSouth Road. The restrictions to the northern-end of the course havenow been removed, with players able to enjoy the fullnine-holes, including the three new holes.Further construction along South Road near Days Roadwill be finished before the wetland area is completed. The wetland, at the northern-end of the golf course, will be planted with reeds and sedges to filterstormwater, as well as featuring a boardwalk for thecommunity to enjoy. When complete, the walking trail will follow thegeneral alignment of South Road running the lengthof the golf course. The surrounding recreation areaprovides playground and BBQ facilities, skate parkand toilets. Please call the Pro-Shop on 8268 5753 for all golfbookings or visit www.regencyparkgolfcourse.com.au.The South Road SuperwayThe $812 million South Road Superway project is thebiggest single investment in a South Australian roadproject as well as the state’s most complex engineeringroad construction project to date. The project will deliver a 4.8km upgraded transitcorridor featuring a 2.8km elevated roadway fromthe Port River Expressway to Regency Road, due forcompletion in in December 2013.For further information about the South Road Superwayproject please call 1300 638 789 oremail dtei.southroadsuperway@sa.gov.au.
