Aboriginal and TorresStr ait Islander Public ArtThe Kaurna people are the Aboriginalpeople of the Adelaide Plains whosecountry spans from Crystal Brook andPort Wakefi eld across the AdelaidePlains to the southern tip of Cape Jervis.Mudlangga (the Lefevre Peninsula) andYertabulti (Port Adelaide) areas belongedto the Wirra Kaurna group who wouldcamp especially along the Port Riverduring the summer months and thentravel across the Port Adelaide Enfi eldarea up to the hills during the winter. As Uncle Lewis O’Brien, a local Eldersays, “the Kaurna’s strong spiritualattachment to the land is understoodthrough stories of the ‘dreaming’ whicharen’t just fairy tales; they speak aboutour country, our law and our knowledge”.It is this intangible cultural and spiritualknowledge that has defi ned anddetermined places of cultural signifi cance;in the environmental, sensory and culturallandscapes of the Kaurna people in theCouncil region and is refl ected in thePublic Art which we are proud to display.Public Art is a striking way of reclaimingAboriginal and Torres Strait Islanderpeople’s ‘spirit of place’ in today’surban landscape. The City of PortAdelaide Enfi eld is proud to set thebenchmark for its largest metropolitancollection of Aboriginal and Torres StraitIslander Public Art and by providingopportunities for the ongoing connectionto land, stories and culture through acreative Arts medium.23Reciprocity (20)This symbol indicates Aboriginal &Torrens Strait Islander Public Artworks

How a Communit y Art ProjectBecomes a Public TreasureHow signifi cant is Community Art andwhat is it that sets it apart from otherPublic Art across the city?A person could be forgiven for initially notnoticing any differentiation between thetwo but there is something of signifi cancethat props Community Art onto itsown distinct pedestal – and that is theprocess. Community Art is all aboutprocesses. In fact the end result, howeverbeautiful, stands in the shadow of theshining light of the collective and creativemind that hatched it; the community– from its embryonic beginning to itscelebrated completion.Members of the community who haveparticipated in such projects have foundthem rewarding on many levels; physical, social, mental and spiritual. CommunityArt projects don’t have to be of titanicproportions and they don’t have tocost a fortune or require you to haveextraordinary artistic talent. They need tobe engaging, rewarding and fun! They arefor everyone, people from all walks of lifeand for any age group. To quote a participant of the ‘Mind andBody Mosaic Stepping Stone’ CommunityArt Project to celebrate Mental HealthWeek in 2005:“It’s nice to share decisions. The coloursare wonderful; they get inside youand sing a bit.”25Footprints (66)

This document linksthe broader commitment of the City ofPort Adelaide Enfi eld to commissionpublic artworks across the PortAdelaide Centre, Semaphore Roadand beyond.
