We never heard another word from the firstthree, who had apparently mistaken our own team's radiomessages for theirs and sent three non-official conveyances.Whoever they were, they worked for freeThursday night! The other nits were incidental, but you shouldknow that we've made notes. The dinners as usual ran toolong. Larry Arnn says the way to fix this is to have bothsalad and the dessert on the table when we sit down —we'll try the salad but it would have been sacrilegious toadvance-plant the delectable hazelnut mousse in itschocolate tulip cups. (Hardly any were left untouched.)Mr. Buckley's speech was selectively inaudible becausetwo of seven speakers were accidentally mute; we compensatedby sending every attending party a tape. Thereception for Professor Schlesinger's speech was in thePlaza Bar, which was too crowded to stand and too darkto navigate. But skillful organization left very little else tocriticize. Among a broad array of speakers I was glad towitness the abundance of that Churchillian quality Iadmire most: humor and courtliness among people ofentirely opposite political persuasions. They proved, asChurchill did, that political discourse can and should becivilized and decorous. The Conference organizers cannot be thankedenough. Barbara Langworth conceived of most of theevents, while Parker Lee applied his years of corporateconference experience to achieve precision throughout. Our volunteers were superb. The result was the smoothestrun conference in history. As several said later, Bostonproved that this Society has come of age as a mature, settledorganization, confident in its values and goals, andsecure in the devotion of those who serve it so selflesslly.SUPPORTERS & SPONSORS• Corporate Support: Philip Morris Companies Inc., HollandAmerica Lines Inc., Books on Tape Inc., Pol Roger Champagne,Alfred Dunhill Ltd., Churchillbooks, Frederick Wildman & Sons.• President's Club: Mr. Fred Farrow, Mr. & Mrs. Gary J.
