EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW AT A SINGLE GLANCE! SEASON
2009
Welcome on board
You have booked one of our Penichettes ® or Europa for your next holiday, and we are delighted to
welcome you to the world of inland waterways. Be assured that we will do our utmost to ensure that your
holiday is a complete success.
Waterway holidays though are quite different to camping holidays or staying in a hotel; they do require all
members of the crew to play their part, both in handling and in looking after the boat: it is this which
makes them so special. We have produced the Captain’s Handbook to introduce you to this very special
sort of holiday. It results from many years’ experience, and is regularly updated. With this in mind we
always welcome your feedback.
This manual should answer all the questions you may have before you leave but if there's anything we
have left out or any detail that is not clear, please, don't hesitate to ask and our experts will be delighted to
assist. Read the ‘Manual’ carefully before you take the boat. It will make the initiation easier and more
efficient. Many practical and theoretical aspects are explained in this book.
Remember that the whole team at each of our bases is there to help. They will do all they can to make
your holiday a truly memorable experience.
We wish you a very enjoyable cruise on the Pénichette ® or the Europa!
BEFORE THE DEPARTURE
ACCESS DETAILS AND OPENING
HOURS FOR THE DEPARTURE DAY
You will find all the access details to reach the bases in the
last part of this book.
All the formalities and the boarding take place every departure
day from 2pm to 6pm. The bases are also open on
these days between 9am to noon. People arriving by plane
or train, can come and leave their luggage.
Some of our bases have particular opening hours (please
see their respective details at the end of this book):
Chioggia, Loisy, Valence-sur-Baïse, La Suze-sur-Sarthe,
Châteauneuf, Mikolajki
There is no point in arriving before 2pm because the registration
and the boarding cannot start before this time, the
morning being reserved for the return of our previous
clients and the preparation of the boat for the following
ones. Equally, if you think you are going to arrive late, it's
vital that you ring the base to let us know. If we're aware,
and you're only a little delayed, we will stay until you get
there. If you're going to be very late, we will give you
instructions about going on board, and we will do the handover
the following morning.
RECEPTION
As soon as you get to the base, go to the office with your
paperwork. It will take between a quarter and a half an hour
to sort out the following formalities:
➲ Filling in the hiring contract
➲ Filling in the ‘boating permit’ in France and the
‘Charterbescheinigung’ in Germany
➲ Paying the all inclusive package if you choose to do so
or
➲ Paying the damage deposit or taking out the damage
waiver
➲ Paying the fuel advance
➲ Hiring bicycles
➲ Hiring dinghies (Germany and Ireland only)
➲ Booking one or more spaces in the car park
and
➲ Paying for the pets charge (if applicable)
➲ Paying for the optional cleaning service
➲ Arranging your return to your vehicle if you are doing a
one-way trip?
➲ Paying for the services you are taking at the base before
you start
➲ Learning points of technical or touristic interest about
your chosen route.
➲ Boat handling – theory
The services you are taking must be paid at the base
before your departure. Our office staff will be delighted to
advise you about your cruising plans, and they will also tell
you about any special factors which might affect the
waterways you will be going on. Once the paperwork is
done, you will be shown your boat, and you’ll be able to
stow your belongings.
Advice:
We suggest you empty your suitcases straight away and
put them back in your car; otherwise they will take up
valuable storage space on board. If you come by train or
plane, ask the base to keep your cases until you return.
PARKING
➲ Nearly all our bases can arrange an enclosed and / or
covered car park (see information about your base). For
some of our bases, there is a limited space, therefore it’s
recommended to book your parking in advance (see information
on the bases).
➲ The fee charged is for parking your car and not for caretaking.
➲ Please note that our bases do not accept responsibility for
theft, loss or damage to your car whilst it is parked. Parking
is always at the owner's risk. We do NOT accept responsibility
for any injuries to people either Don’t forget to lock
your car and to switch the radio and lights off.
➲ If you want to go to a base to get your car back out of the
departure days, please do call the base and organise a
appointment, it could be closed otherwise.
➲ See chapter on the bases at the end of this book.
BEFORE THE DEPARTURE
THE SHOPPING BASKET
SERVICE
For those who wish, we can put together a shopping basket
of essential items to be onboard when you arrive.
We will pass your order to a local supplier. They will
process your order and deliver it to your departure base,
or even to your boat, on the day you set off. The supplier
undertakes to provide you with a detailed bill when he
hands over your purchases. You should pay the supplier
directly. Please arrange to pay in cash. If the supplier
isn't at the base when you arrive, you can leave cash payment
for your goods with the receptionist at the base.
Please, note that this service is not available at the bases
of La Suze sur Sarthe and Valence-sur Baïse; for
Chioggia you would have to pay a fee of € 5.
How to order:
➲ Fill in the form at the end of the book.
➲ Tick the boxes of the products you want to order; please
provide maximum information and any brand names
(please write legibly).
➲ Detach the page from your manual.
➲ Send it to your departure base (by fax, email or post),
the address of which is shown in the base access details,
10 days before your stay. You can also use the form on
our website (www.locaboat.com).
BICYCLES
BEFORE THE DEPARTURE
Bicycles are a great complement to a cruise. The towpaths
alongside the canals encourage the use of bicycles. They
allow you to move away from the river or canal, when you
stop, so you can go and discover the surrounding countryside.
They are very useful to go shopping in the cities and
towns nearby. The bases have more than 700 bicycles for
you to choose from. You will find 2 categories of bicycles at
your departure base: mini-bikes for children and hybrid
ones for adults. It is nevertheless better to reserve your
bicycles in advance directly with your departure base.
Helmets for adults are not supplied.
HIRING OF DINGHIES (in Germany and Ireland)
PETS
Dogs and other domestic animals are welcome on board. Verify that the animal is vaccinated and make sure you provide essential
equipment for your animal; you will not find it on board nor at the base. At your departure, you will have to pay, for each animal,
depending on the bases:
Locaboat’s bases: € 20/animal, however long you stay on board;
Cardinal’s bases: € 10/day/animal for the first 4 days then € 2/day/animal for the following days.
Please ensure that your pet does not sleep on the bedding!
Mini-Bikes for Child: wheels 16’’ or 18'’, single speed, for children
of 5 to 12 years.
Hybrid bikes: 26’’ wheels, 3 or 4 speeds, mud guards, luggage
carriers.
Baby-carrier, adaptable to the adult bicycle, will be put at your
disposal free of charge (weight maximum 22 kg).
BASKET for shopping attachable on the front of the bicycles;
available free of charge, subject to availability.
Our Advice: 1 bicycle is included in the ‘all included’ package
per day per week
VAT incl. VAT incl.
Mini-bikes for children € 3 € 21
General purpose bikes € 6 € 42
Important: In a dinghy or a small boat, everybody MUST wear a lifejacket. It is definitely forbidden to be in a dinghy while
it’s being towed. Attention, the number of dinghies and motors is limited. Order early!
Ireland:
A rowing dinghy of 2.50 m is included in the boat hire price.
Reservation is highly recommended
➲ You can replace it by a bigger dinghy of 3.50 m or
➲ 4.50 m equipped with oars or with an outboard motor.
Germany:
No dinghy is included with the hiring package. It is possible to
rent a rowing boat of 3 m long, which you can equip with a sail.
➲ This useful addition will be particularly appreciated by
fishermen, ornithologists and lovers of nature.
➲ It will allow you to go in the most hidden corners or to land
while your boat can remain at anchor in a well sheltered bay.
➲ For your children, this will be an object of additional joy for
exploration.
per day per week
DIESEL – ADVANCES OF DIESEL
BEFORE THE DEPARTURE
To start your cruise, your diesel tank will be full. At your return, we will fill it up ourselves in order to avoid the long queue at the
petrol station and to simplify your return. The consumption is calculated according to the real number of hours you cruised, shown
by the time meter in the boat and on the basis of the consumption as below:
➲ According to the type of boat and the region, the tank gives
a range of at least 15 days.
➲ The heating and the production of hot water of certain
Pénichettes ® and Europas is by diesel. A separate time
meter for the boiler will show how long it ran (the cost of
the fixed price boiler is very variable according to the season
and the temperature people wish on board).
➲ The ‘fixed Navigation package’ is published in all the
bases but can be modified at any moment, according to
the fuel price.
➲ For information, in 2008 the price of a day varied between
€ 20 and € 35 according to the boat.
If you choose the "all inclusive" package, you will not need to pay in advance for the fuel as the price of the diesel for the
heating and the motor have already been included in the fixed price.
THE INITIATION TO THE BOAT
When you've unpacked your things, a technician will come
on board to explain the engine and the boat's equipment. If
you are unsure of anything at all, please do ask for further
explanation. Above all, don't be in too much of a rush to
get started. It’s better to be given some information over
again, rather than get stuck after leaving the base!
Do remember there may well be several other boats starting
on the same day as you, so please be patient and
remember that the staff can't look after everybody at the
same time. Relax on board and await your turn. You should
never expect to do any cruising on the first day; you will
normally spend that night at the base. In Germany, this
initiation is longer and you should plan to arrive at the base
for 3 pm.
Expect all these preliminaries to take about two hours, and
look on the time as part of your holiday! Before getting
under way, go through the inventory, check on where everything
is, see that it's all working properly and do please let
us know if something is missing or isn't right.
Bedding: In the majority of the bases, the bed linen is
cleaned by an external company. It returns cloths packed
up in a sheet of plastic which guarantees their cleanliness.
Please, check the contents of each package before leaving
or the base closed.
THE RETURN TO THE BASE
Return schedule to the base 8 to 9 a.m.
Lock’s Opening in most of the regions,
at 9 a.m.
To facilitate the return of your boat, take account of
these rules:
➲ Respect the time for the return of your boat: from 8 o'clock
to 9 o'clock.
➲ Attention, on many rivers, the locks open only at 9 o’clock;
it is therefore prudent to return to the base the evening
before.
➲ Return your boat in a generally good condition and general
cleanliness (bins emptied, crockery cleaned, sheets folded
down, toilets clean), even if you subscribed for a cleaning
service.
➲ Go to the reception to pay for your fixed price navigation
and return your extra hired equipment (bicycles, etc.).
➲ Think about the customers that will take your boat immediately
following you and advise the reception of any problems
that you had.
➲ Your damage deposit will be given back to you once the
boat and the inventory is checked by the base staff; we
remind you that you are responsible for the boat and its
equipment in case of damages or accident.
➲ If you choose to return your boat before the normal time,
please let the return base know, so that somebody can be
there to check it.
➲ Reminder: in case of abandonment of the boat, a fixed
price of € 100 per day for transportation will be billed to
you for its return to the base as well as the amount of the
fuel and, if necessary, the fixed price of the cleaning service.
BEFORE THE DEPARTURE
TRANSFER IN CASE OF A ONE WAY
CRUISE
The one-way ticket supplement does not include the
return of the crew to the departure base. According to
the journey, there are different ways of getting back to the
departure base or organising your vehicle transport.
➲ Vehicle delivery is not possible for vehicles exceeding a
value of € 70,000, included hired vehicles.
If you choose to transfer by taxi, there are two possibilities:
➲ Transfer the day of the departure: you leave your vehicle at
the arrival base. You order your taxi to the departure base
48 hours in advance, by fax or e-mail.
➲ Transfer the day of the return: you order the taxi to the
departure base.
On some routes, the links by train are excellent, quicker
and more economical. From the base, a taxi can drive you
quickly to the train station; just ask for details.
ABANDONMENT OF THE BOAT
A fixed price of € 100 a day will be charged for conveying
the boat back to the base as well as the amount of the fuel
and, if necessary, the fixed price for the cleaning service.
CLEANING AT THE END OF YOUR
CRUISE OR FIXED CLEANING SERVICE
The day of the return, you will have to give the boat back,
cleaned inside as well as outside. If you do not wish to do it,
you can choose the fixed cleaning service. This means the
personnel of the base will take charge of the cleaning.
Nevertheless, we will expect you, before returning the boat:
➲ To clean the crockery and store it.
➲ To throw the rubbish in the rubbish bins provided.
➲ To empty and arrange the closets and the drawers.
➲ To strip the beds.
We would have to charge for 2 cleaning services if you
do not respect those instructions.
Our advice: The cleaning service is included in the
‘all inclusive’ package
Navigation Advice
BASIC RULES AT A GLANCE
➲ You will find, at the end of this book, a table of the signs
that you may meet during your cruise. Please, respect
these signals.
➲ Navigation is allowed only during daylight and with good
visibility. It is forbidden to sail after sunset or when the conditions
do not allow you to see the route (fog for example).
➲ When you sail alone, you can remain in the middle of the
water way, but when you approach another boat, you
must go over to your right. On a river it is imperative to
use the advised channel of navigation on your river guide.
➲ Maximum authorized speed:
on the canals : 5 to 8 km/hour
on the rivers : 10 to 12 km/hour
Respect these speed limits! On certain sections and nearby
harbours, speed limits can be lower, but a signal will
indicate if this is the case.
➲ Please, never create problems for commercial navigation
(barges and boats with passengers) which always have
priority.
It is forbidden to overtake a barge without the agreement
of the bargeman, either by a sign or if he moves
to the right. Do not forget that for the bargemen,
sailing is his work.
THE PLEASURE OF CRUISING
Cruising on rivers and canals is surprisingly straightforward. Common sense is the main requirement, and although you do also
need to pay attention the whole time, it’s not at all the same stressful experience as driving a car.
We wish you a fantastic cruise!
➲ Slow down while passing in front of fishermen and keep
away from their lines. In Germany and in Ireland, the fishermen
are numerous and often leave a net in water. Be very
vigilant.
9
10
THE PLEASURE OF CRUISING
RULES OF PRIORITY
The rules of priority are very easy:
➲ The professional boats have priority over leisure boats;
therefore, you will have to stay away from the path of
these boats
➲ Sailing boats and rowboats are usually less easy to handle.
You will have to avoid them therefore. A sailing boat
running with its motor is considered as a motorboat.
➲ In general terms, boats with engines move to the starboard
(right) side. If their paths should cross, priority goes to the one
who is coming from the right.
➲ Never cut in front of a boat (professional, sailing ship, rowing
boat), avoid them by going round behind them.
Whether you sail on canal or river, manoeuvres and rules of
priority are part of the responsibility of the captain. They are
astonishingly easy as long as you observe the principles
below.
BRAKE AND STOP THE BOAT
To slow and stop your boat, use the reverse gear. You must
always be in control of your speed. For a good manoeuvre,
it’s important not to accelerate too strongly.
➲ You must engage reverse gear and accelerate briskly and
proportionately to your speed and stopping distance. Do
not forget that when going from forwards to reverse, leave
the gear in neutral for two seconds to avoid damage to the
gearbox.
➲ After having slowed/stopped return to the neutral position.
Do not forget that there is always a certain lapse of time
before the boat responds to manoeuvres.
Navigation Advice
CROSSROADS IN A NARROW
PASSAGE
Fishermen:
Usually the fishermen take their line out of the river.
Anyway, you have to avoid the fishermen by taking wild
berth.
Other boats:
➲ If the other boat is further than you to the narrow
passage, you go first
➲ If the other boat is closer than you to the narrow
passage, give him the right of way.
TURNING ROUND IN A SMALL
SPACE
It may look difficult, even for an experienced pilot, to turn
round in a small space. It’s easier than it looks, you just
need to:
➲ Stop the boat.
➲ For Pénichette, with a right handed screw of the propeller,
steer completely to starboard (right) and leave the
helm in this position for the whole of the manoeuvre.
➲ Engage forward gear and accelerate briskly, then return to
neutral. The stern will naturally turn to port (left). Watch
the front and back of the boat carefully.
➲ Now engage reverse gear with the same brisk acceleration;
the stern will continue to turn.
➲ Continue forward gear / reverse gear until the boat has
turned around.
➲ Europas have a left handed screw of the propeller, so
you just have to reverse the manoeuvre.
Mooring
MOORING
➲ Always do everything really slowly. Don’t forget you don’t
have a brake pedal and that boats take time to respond.
➲ Always put the bows into the bank first and have a crew
member well forward with a boat hook to fend off if necessary.
They should take extreme care never to try to fend
off with his foot, leg or arm. If you come in bows first, it
reduces the risk of the propeller getting damaged or entangled.
➲ Once the boat is touching the bank, make sure the engine
is in neutral. Your crew member should then step ashore
taking the bow rope with them. You or a third crew member
should then pass or throw them the back rope. In the
same way, when leaving a mooring, you should untie the
mooring with the current
mooring against the current / wind
MOORING IN REVERSE
➲ Place the boat so that the rear is presented to the middle
of your neighbours boat.
➲ Turn the wheel to port (left) side then put the gear in a
slow reverse.
➲ If your boat is coming in too near to the neighbouring boat
and without changing the direction of the wheel, go straight
into forward gear and then gently come back in reverse gear.
You will notice that the rear of your boat moves towards the
port side. You can eventually re-do this manoeuvre and your
THE PLEASURE OF CRUISING
stern first and push it out. A short burst in reverse will then
take the boat out into the middle of the channel without
risk of damaging the propeller.
➲ Never turn the engine off until the boat is tied up. Equally
never untie the boat before the engine is running.
➲ On a river always come in to moor facing upstream, against
the current. In strong winds, on a river or on a lake, moor
facing into the wind. When a river or canal has a towpath;
you should normally moor on that side.
➲ If your manoeuvre wasn’t quite right, don’t worry, try again,
and take your time. Remember that you are on holiday and
time is on your side.
In some ports it is worthwhile to moor in reverse. Particularly with boats such as the Aft-decks or Flying Bridges, because it is
easier to disembark.
boat will move without any problem into the position you have
chosen.
This is how to moor when the mooring berth is situated
port (left) side to your boat.
For boats equipped with bow thrusters, the manoeuvre is
easier but remember not to use it too much.
THE PLEASURE OF CRUISING
TYING UP
It is important that the boat is securely tied up, particularly
when you stop for the night.
You may moor anywhere except:
➲ At less than 200 meters from a lock or weir.
➲ when forbidden by a sign.
➲ where it makes circulation difficult.
➲ on a tight bend, where the channel is narrow, underneath
a bridge or in a lock (except if the lockkeeper expressly asks
you to do so).
➲ near or in an area of reeds.
➲ On private banks of rivers or lakes. In many places there are
proper quays. Some of these are free, but at others, generally
with water and electricity laid on, there is a small fee.
➲ Never have ropes across the towpath, walkers and cyclists
might get hurt.
➲ To moor a boat properly, tie up the stern first and then the
bow.
➲ Never have ropes across the towpath, walkers and cyclists
might get hurt.
➲ Tying up in the wild might seem fun, but think about access
to your boat.
➲ It is forbidden to tie up to trees, as it can damage the
trees and can give rise to a large fine .To moor in the countryside
use the two mooring spikes and the hammer
which are provided on board.
➲ If there's a strong wind, moor on the side the wind is
blowing from; otherwise you'll never be able to get away
from the bank when you want to leave.
➲ If there is a possibility that the level of the river or lake might
change, do not tie up too tightly.
wrong
right
Mooring
Advice:
be attentive to your mooring ropes.
Take care of them;
keep them tidy and well arranged.
A rope which falls in the water and
wraps around the propeller is likely
to cause tiresome breakdown.
Mooring
ANCHORAGE
In Germany, Poland (night and day) and in Ireland (just
during the day) you are allowed to drop the anchor in
order to moor. It’s important to check the evening weather
forecast before deciding to spend the night tied to the
anchor. You should give up the idea if the wind is over
Force 3 Beaufort (12 – 19 km/h or 8-11 knots). In other
countries, it is forbidden to moor with the anchor.
➲ In Germany, it is forbidden to moor with the anchor near
to reeds, fauna reproduction areas or on a canal.
Remember to keep a good distance from the banks.
➲ An anchor holds well especially in sandy ground or clay.
➲ The mooring where you choose to spend the night should
be protected from the waves, wind, and give you enough
room to turn on yourself.
➲ If you spend the night don't forget to switch on your
anchor light and that light only.
Important:
THE PLEASURE OF CRUISING
Dropping anchor
➲ Evaluate the depth.
➲ Stop the boat facing the wind.
➲ Put the motor into neutral position.
➲ Release the anchor until it touches the bottom.
➲ When the boat begins backing up with the wind, unwind.
the chain progressively so that it lays along the bottom.
Raising the anchor:
➲ Pull up the chain until it is vertical.
➲ Start up the motor.
➲ Pull the anchor on board. Please think about cleaning the
chain and the anchor by plunging them back in the water.
➲ Leave the mooring place slowly.
➲ Anchor with the chain: to give an equivalent length to three times the depth
➲ Anchor with the rope: to give an equivalent length to five times the depth.
DEPARTURE (TO DROP THE ROPES)
Your boat is at quay and moored.
➲ Start up the motor and untie all the ropes except the one
at the front.
➲ A team member goes in the front boat, undoes the rope
knot at the front but keeps the rope in their hand and
maintains the mooring at the front.
➲ Turn the steering wheel towards the quay and slowly
increase the power. You will note that the boat’s back
comes away from the quay.
➲ From the moment the back is released, go back into neutral
position and straighten the wheel to zero.
The best way to leave.
➲ Your team member now can drop the rope at the front
and arrange it tidily.
➲ Verify that the back of the boat is free. You can leave
backwards.
➲ When the boat is free, put the gear back in neutral
position then slowly in the forward position.
➲ It is important to immediately wind the ropes up with care.
➲ Do not forget to retrieve the mallets and mooring spikes
if you have used them.
LOCKS
The days and hours of lock openings are different from one country to another. On some rivers they can be closed during bank holidays
(please see our brochure, our website, or our river guide).
Types of locks
1. Manually operated with a lockkeeper
➲ The less commonly encountered lock and the most sociable.
It’s the opportunity to glean information on the region.
➲ To help relations further, do give the lock keeper a hand -
he or she will be very grateful!
2. Electrified with a lockkeeper
➲ Opening and closing of gates as well as operation of gate
paddles or locks are motorised under the control of the
keeper.
3. Manually operated without a lockkeeper
➲ Small in size, these types of lock are only on a few littleused
canals and rivers.
➲ The boat crew must operate them themselves.
4. Automated without a lockkeeper
➲ These are medium-sized locks found on canals and rivers
with little commercial traffic.
Attention:
Never jump down onto the roof of the boat,
because they are very fragile particularly if it has a sliding roof
Locks, aqueducts and boat lifts
➲ Details of how to operate them will be given to you or
explained at the departure base:
In some cases, a radar detects your boat and sets the operation
in progress.
In other cases, an electronic smart card or a remote control
system is used. This control will be given to you at the
departure base or enroute.
Finally, some have to be operated at the lock.
➲ Instructions are displayed in several languages.
➲ In case of problems there is a phone for assistance.
5. Large mechanised lock with keeper
➲ Frequently found on big rivers.
➲ These locks can generally hold one or more barges or
leisure boats at the same time.
➲ Entry into them is controlled by traffic lights (red & green
lights).
➲ Follow the instructions, often given through a loud speaker.
Attention: Never forget, commercial craft always take priority over you!
Attention:
Risk of falling! Be careful of locks’ ladders,
they are extremely slippery and you are likely
to hurt yourself or to fall into the water
Locks, aqueducts and boat lifts
Lock etiquette
Getting it right going through locks is largely a matter of good teamwork. The keeper isn’t obliged to help you tie up your boat in
the lock. If he does, it is by kindness. In return you are normally expected to help him in opening and closing the lock gates. It
takes on average between15 and 20 minutes to pass through a lock depending on type.
Some lock keepers will ask you to keep the engine ticking
over (so you can take speedy action in an emergency).
Others will ask you to turn off the engine. In general:
France keep the engine on
Germany switch it off
➲ Avoid presenting yourself at a lock just before it’s closing
(including lunch break in France) arrive at least half
an hour before. The day of a lock keeper is long, it is
normal to respect it.
Approaching a lock
Leaving a lock
THE PLEASURE OF CRUISING
➲ The Captain is expected to warn the lock keeper if he
intends to stop before getting to the next lock.
➲ Locks can take several boats at once. Sometimes you may
have to wait a little, so the keeper can group boats and
therefore save water.
➲ Commercial barges always have priority at locks.
If the gates are closed when you arrive, stop about 100 meters from the lock and tie up. Either the lock is set for the other direction
or there’s a boat already in the lock. You can send a crew member up to the lock on foot in order to investigate. You must
wait until the lock is ready, and then either sail in, or, if another boat is coming out, wait until it has passed you before
starting off. If the lock is automated and without a keeper, follow the instructions given by the base on the working of automated
locks.
Before attempting to manoeuvre wait for the gates to be opened completely and then go out straight ahead and in the middle
of the channel to minimize the risk of scraping the lock walls (check the fenders are in position and use the boat hook if
necessary).
If you intend to stop in the next pound (i.e. before the next lock), don’t forget to tell the keeper. Doing this helps to keep traffic
moving.
Attention
your rope must always be
free and able to slide freely.
If not, your boat might
get hurt up!
15
16
THE PLEASURE OF CRUISING
Locking down
➲ Enter the lock chamber slowly. When you are well inside,
go into reverse in order to stop the boat. (always go in
with power on - if the propeller isn’t turning on you
have no control over the boat) Moor up, first at the bow,
then at the stern.
➲ Leave enough play in the ropes (which you should hold on
to) to allow for a fall of 3 to 4 meters or sometimes even
more.
➲ Make sure the boat doesn’t get drawn back too close to
the upper gates, lest the rudder and propeller gets
caught on the gate sill.
Locks, aqueducts and boat lifts
➲ The lock keeper then opens the paddles or lock on the
lower gates. While the water is going down, keep the ropes
taut, letting them out bit by bit as the boat goes down.
➲ When the level has stabilised, the crew member on shore
helps the keeper to open the lower gates, while the crew
on board pull in the mooring ropes.
➲ Push the boat off, motor out slowly as soon as the gates
are fully open.
To help retrieve the crew member on shore there are usually
ladders on the lock gates (watch out! they are often slippery).
Alternatively, you can nose your boat gently into the bank 50
yards beyond the lock so they can get back on. Never jump
down from the lock side onto the roof of the boat, not only
is it dangerous for you, but it could also damage the boat, particularly
if it has a sliding roof.
Locks, aqueducts and boat lifts
Locking up
➲ You enter the lock slowly, after dropping off a crew member.
➲ When you are well in, put the engine into reverse in order
to stop, and then throw the mooring ropes to the crew
member on shore, throwing the front one first. To reduce
the risk of accidents, don’t moor up to the bollards nearest
the gates.
➲ The crew member on shore passes each rope round a bollard,
then hands the end of the rope back to a crew member
on board, who should hold on to them (but never
loop the rope around your arm or wrist !).
➲ Next the crew member on shore can help the lock keeper
with closing the lower gates.
THE PLEASURE OF CRUISING
➲ The lock keeper will then open the paddles or sluices on
the upper gates, helped by the crew member ashore. Crew
members on board should keep the ropes tight as the
water rises, so as to keep the boat close in to the lock wall.
(Never use hands or feet to fend off or you could get
badly hurt; use the boat hook)
➲ As soon as the water level inside the lock matches that
outside, the keeper and the crew member on shore will
open the upper gates.
➲ Once you have taken on board your crew member and the
mooring ropes, you can motor gently out of the lock.
THE PLEASURE OF CRUISING
LAKES, RIVERS AND CANALS
Cruising on canals is the simpliest, even if there are many locks. There is no current, you can stop virtually anywhere, and the
towpath makes it easy to go off on shopping expeditions. Cruising on lakes and rivers demands a little more care; waterways are
often wider, and you must carefully observe the buoys marking the navigable channel to avoid sandbanks and rocks. Often there is
more traffic, which may range from large commercial barges to speedboats, sailing dinghies and canoes. With no towpath, you
have to stop at quaysides in order to do your shopping. Even if you may be tempted, please remember it is strictly forbidden
to take our boats out to sea, for safety reasons.
➲ If canals are virtually never in flood, the same is not true of
rivers. Usually this occurs in spring when heavy rainfall
combines with snow melt in the mountains but sometimes
also in autumn. As a rule, rivers in flood go down again
after just a few days.
➲ Some rivers can also suffer rapid rises in level when a
damn upstream releases large quantities of water. Usually
advance warning of this is given to pleasure boaters.
➲ Both canals and rivers can be affected by drought and
water shortages. Should this happen, cruising may be
restricted, or even forbidden on certain sections. However
engineering works and careful nurturing of resources have
tended to lessen the problem.
➲ On lakes, rivers and canals the damp can bring potentially
dangerous fog in the mornings. If you can't see anything,
do not navigate.
Crossing lakes and open water
➲ When crossing stretches of open water, you must stick to
the navigation channels shown on your map, and go the
correct side of buoys where they exist.
➲ Never start out to cross open water in unfavourable
weather conditions.
If the wind is above Force 3 on the Beaufort scale (12 –
19 km/h or 8-11 knots) and / or if waves are higher than
50 cm/1’6” you must not try to cross. Ring the weather
phone, whose number the base will have given you.
➲ On open water, wear your life jackets; should you fall
overboard, the consequences could be fatal.
➲ If you moor at night on a lake, think about your
anchor lights.
➲ Never cruise at night on open water.
Locks, aqueducts and boat lifts
Aqueducts, tunnels and boat lifts
The waterways boast many examples of human ingenuity,
several of which are listed historical monuments and tourist
attractions in their own right.
➲ Aqueducts, first used in the 17 th century, enable canals to
cross rivers or ravines. A few famous examples: The
Aqueduct of Digoin on the Loire river, near Dompierre, the
one in Agen on the Garonne or again the aqueduct of
Beziers on the Orb (Canal du Midi)…
➲ Certain roads crossed canals with differents bridges like lifting-bridge
(mainly present in Holland), and also Swingingbridges
(which you have to manoeuvre yourself sometime
like the one on the Nivernais, close to Corbigny).
➲ Tunnels, which are usually on the highest pound of a
canal, can be several kilometres long. They operate on a
one-way basis, with entry controlled by lights. You can find
them on the Saône near Scey as well as in Alsace, close to
Lutzelbourg or in the North. Among the most impressive
ones there is the Colancelle, on the Nivernais River, or the
one of Pouilly, the longest one in France, on the Burgundy
canal.
➲ Boat lifts and water slopes are rare. Invented to replace a
chain of locks, they can be a major highlight of your cruise.
The one at Artzwiller in Lorraine comes immediately to
mind, and the other one at Niderfinow to the east of
Berlin, is one of the highest in Europe.
Advice:
On lakes and rivers, respect the beacons that mark
the channel.
The River Guide or the Water map are a useful
assistance to avoid the bank of sand and rocks.
Basic rules
SAFETY ON BOARD
Your boat is duly registered by an official insurance company as well as by the authorities.
It meets all the security conditions required by law. You must however also contribute to the active safety of your boat and its
crew:
➲ by taking the precaution of holding your children and your
animals inside the boat while going through a lock or
mooring
➲ by wearing appropriate walking or sport shoes
➲ by preserving minimum order on board
➲ by taking care to roll up your ropes after each manoeuvre
INVENTORY OF SAFETY EQUIPMENT
Extinguisher
SAFETY ON BOARD
➲ by explaining to your crew that nobody should roll a
mooring rope up around their wrist or trying to stop
the boat with their foot
➲ by not under estimating the inertia of your boat. And never
forget the essential rule: hold the boat by one hand and
keep the other one free to be used.
And never forget:
hold the boat by one hand and
keep the other one free to be used.
Each boat is provided with extinguishers. Check where they are during your introduction to the boat in the base. If you have to
use them during your cruise, please don’t forget on your return to the base to let them know.
Anchors
All our boats are equipped with an anchor which would be your safety aid in the event of breakdown or of a wrong manoeuvre
near a dam. Before throwing the anchors over board, first make sure that the rope or the chain is firmly attached to the boat. Let it
unravel to the maximum (the length is about thirty meters approximately). Never use an anchor in a canal.
Lifebuoy and lifejacket
All our boats are supplied with a lifebuoy and sufficient lifejackets.
If you travel with children, request lifejacket for their size
before you leave the base. (starting from 10 kg)
Our advice:
we recommend you to order the life jacket for your
children between 10 to 15 days before your departure
date by filling in the form you will find at the end of
this book, with the weight of you child, and then send
it by mail, fax or email
IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT
Please call the base immediately; our employees will help you
and give you all the instructions and, if necessary, will send
someone out to help you. In case of an accident with a third
part, it is the captains reponsability to fill in a report (a specimen
is in the manual), not forgetting to note names and
addresses of the witnesses.
It's the same like on the road, never
sign a declaration admitting your
responsibility. In case of doubt or of disagreement,
it is better to wait for a member of
our base or someone from the police. In a lock,
you have the right to ask for a report/feedback
on the accident to the lockkeeper
SAFETY ON BOARD
Attention: Do not try to stop the boat with your foot.
Attention: Be carefulwhen you use the boat hook; never keep it in front of your body.
Attention: Pay attention and be very carefull when you jump to the bank.
Basic rules
Accidents and Safety Equipment
remember to wear appropriate shoes.
Do not roll a mooring rope up around your wrist or ankles.
SAFETY ON BOARD
Pay attention to the risk
of accident when you
are going through low
bridges.
Think and appreciate the height
of your boat, including all
objects which are on the deck
(bicycles, parasol) and add a
security margin of 20 cm (7.8
in / 0.6 ft).
SAFETY ON BOARD
IN CASE OF AN FAILURE?
THE ENGINE
In case of a failure
All Pénichettes ® and Europas use an inboard diesel engine whose compartment has soundproofing. For your comfort, do not sail
beyond the advised speed.
DIESEL
Our engines run with diesel. The capacity of the tanks is enough for to 2 to 3 weeks. Pénichettes ® or Europa consumes from 3 to
5 liters per hour. During your boat introduction, the technician will tell you the exact capacity of your boat. On your return, you will
have to pay for your fuel consumption on the basis of the fixed price calculated by the time meter (see chapter “before the
departure”).
BREAKDOWNS
Fortunately, they are rare but can happen, they can be of any nature: a problem with the engine, electricical problem, problem
with the heating… If anything happens to you, call your base immediately and give the following information:
➲ Your name and the name of your boat
➲ The precise location where you are.
➲ The nature of the breakdown (according to your observations).
A technician will come quickly, but give him some time to arrive. Do not try to repair the problem yourself.
If the breakdown doesn’t stop you cruising, we will make an appointment for later. Sometimes, particulary on Sundays, bank holidays
and out of opening hours, you will reach an answer machine. In this case, leave a message without forgetting to give the
three points above and don’t forget to say the time of your call. If you have a mobile phone, please, leave your number for the
departure base. After the problem has been dealt with, the technician will ask you to sign a document ‘end of intervention’ where
you can add your comments.
ADVICE:
A light and/or sound alarm is placed on the dashboard.
➲ If it is shows/sounds, approach the nearest bank immediately and turn your engine off.
➲ Wait a few minutes to allow the engine to cool down then start again
➲ If the alarm starts again, call the base
Whatever the waterway, it can happen that a plastic bag or other waste is caught in the propeller…
unless it is your own rope. In these cases, each Pénichette® has an easy access to the
propeller.
➲ Turn off the engine, switch off the batteries master switch and take out the key
➲ Open the propeller trap door, check if any water comes into the boat, take a good knife and slice everything caught
around the propeller.
➲ Do not forget to close the propeller access before setting out again. Check that, while the boat is moving, water does not
infiltrate by the trap door.
Kitchen, Cabin & Comfort
THE GALLEY AND ITS EQUIPMENT
LIFE ABOARD
All our Penichettes ® and Europas have a well-planned cooking area, so you'll be able to prepare proper meals. The specification varies
between models, but you will always have the following:
Cooker
operating on bottled gas, with two or three rings and an oven.
These are protected by a flame failure device.
Refrigerator
electric or gas depending on boat model; capacity varies
from 100 to 450 liters, and the ice tray is only for ice cubes.
Bear this in mind when doing your shopping, and try to buy
as little as possible that needs to go in the fridge.
Sink
with running hot and cold water.
Bedding
All boats come fully equipped with bedding: sheets, pillows
and duvets; if you are someone who really feels the cold you
might consider taking your own sleeping bag.
Pots and Pans*
Your boat will be sufficiently well equipped to be able to cope
with its maximum number of occupants.
Crockery and Glass*
Again, a sufficient amount is provided for the maximum
capacity of the boat.
Tea towels
Neither towels nor tea towels are provided (except in
Ireland), and you should bring your own. Should you forget,
you can buy them at the base when you get there.
When you take over the boat, check the kitchen inventory, and if there's anything missing, let us know straight away.
Cabins
On board a boat, space is obviously restricted, and we have given a higher priority to providing ample living space than to sleeping
space. Cabins are always on the small side, though amply equipped with storage space.
Heating
All boats have heating. Some systems run on gas, others on
diesel. For safety reasons, and to conserve fuel, do pay
attention to the instructions you will be given when you set
off.
LIFE ONBOARD
Shower and WC
All our boats are fully fitted out with shower, basin and WC. Larger boats generally have more than one WC.
Shower
All our boats have one or more showers. Try to keep your
showering brief, since the water supply isn't limitless. Try to
sort out a rota for using the shower, and do keep the drain
free of grit and hair which might clog the drain pump. Towels
and flannels are not provided (except in Ireland and Poland),
and you should bring your own. Should you forget they can
be obtained at the base.
W.C.
All our boats have one or more WCs. There is a hand or
electric pump for flushing them. You must not put Tampons,
sanitary towels or too much toilet paper at a time down the
WC. (one out of every three call-outs is for a blocked WC).
Diesel
Diesel, gas, electricity and water
Our engines run with diesel. To avoid queuing at the petrol station and to make your disembarkation easier, we don’t ask you to refuel
the tank yourself which also limits the risk of pollution. Then you will be charge for your fuel consumption on the basis of the real
number of hours of cruising you’ve done shown by the time meter. This mode of invoicing was chosen by almost every hiring boat
company across Europe. The capacity of the tanks, filled before your departure is enough for at least 15 days (variable according to the
area and the type of boat). Heating and the production of hot water on certain boats also run on diesel. A time meter specific to the
boiler will indicate its operating time (the cost of the fixed price boiler is very variable according to the season and the temperature
desired on board). The Navigation tariff is posted in all the bases and can, according to the price of the fuel, be modified constantly.
For information, in September 2008 the price for one day, based on 5hours cruising varied between € 20 and € 41 depending of the
type of the boat. Before your departure, the base will require an advance on fuel according to the length of your cruise. It will be
deducted on your return.
The cooker rings, the oven, the heating system as well as hot water on board of some of our boats are run on gas. Your boat is
equipped at least with two tanks of 13 kg gas (10.5 kg in Holland and Germany). At your departure, a bottle is full and the other
started. The supply of a full bottle is included in the price of your stay, the extra ones are payable (approximately € 20). For the
Pénichettes equipped with gas heating, at certain periods of the year, in certain areas, it is necessary to heat the boat in a more intense
way, it is advised to provide an additional full bottle that our base will be able to provide at the public price at the time.
Prices and information are for the 2009 season only.
Electricity and water
Water
Electricity
LIFE ONBOARD
Storage capacities of drinking water are optimized for each boat. Therefore, they give you only limited capacity; variable according to
the number of people occupying the boat. You leave with full tanks and you have the possibility of filling them up in ports and certain
locks. The cost varies according to the place and the capacity of the boat. The water points are mentioned on the river guides. On
board, distribution of running water is done by an electric pump that we advise you disconnect during the night to prevent any
disturbance by the noise.
According to the type of boat, the hot water is furnished:
➲ By heating motor. Water is heated at 70°C; the reserve is
from 40 to 100 l according to the type of boat. The water is
still hot in the morning. If you wish it hotter, just turn the
engine on.
The electric on your boat is supplied by a battery refilled by an alternator induced by the motor. Battery autonomy is very variable
according to the type of boat and your usage. Certain devices, if they are used intensely, can empty the batteries in less than 24 hours:
this is the case of the refrigerator and lighting. To avoid electric breakdowns, you have:
➲ To sail or let the motor work to 1500 t/min, for a minimum
of three hours a day (more if you intensively use the
electrical fittings), for two different time in the day (morning
and the afternoon)
Always remember that it’s the motor that refills the batteries: in other words you are likely to breakdown if you sail very little!
Most of the boats haven’t got any 230 V socket on board. All are equipped with a 12 V of ‘lights cigar’ type, strictly limited to
2 amps. All are equipped with a 12 V of ‘lights cigar’ type, strictly limited to 2 amps. If you need to charge your mobile, you will be able
to plug it on this 12 V socket (do not forget the necessary adapter) or look for 230 V socket in a restaurant or a harbor. It is useless to
bring electric devices (hairdryer…) on board.
Prices and information are for the 2009 season only.
➲ By a boiler. In this case the quantity of water at 70°C is not
limited and depends on the water tank. The central heating
produces hot water in priority.
The boats in Ireland and Germany or the new or renovated boats have grey water tanks. Where it is possible, we recommend you to
empty them every two or three days.
➲ To connect your boat, if it’s equipped with an autonomous
charger and an electric cable of 230 V, to the electric
supplies of the harbors when you are stop. We advise you to
plug in automatically when it is possible.
Practical informations A to Z
Alphabetically listed answers to all the questions you may still have…
as well as some useful snippets of advice on the following pages.
ANIMALS
Dogs and other domestic pets are welcome on board. It is
possible now to take domestic pets to Ireland; however the
conditions are quite strict. The Irish Tourist Office will give you
all the necessary information. Make sure you bring everything
your animal needs (blanket, feeding bowl…), as you won't
find anything on board, nor at the base.
Don't forget to look after them particularly when mooring and
going through locks. A charge will be collected for your pet by
the base (See page 6). Please don't let your pet sleep on the
bedding. While at the departure or arrival base, please keep
your dog on a lead. However, if your dog stays on the boat,
you can take off the lead.
BARBECUE
The banks of rivers and canals are tempting spots to have a
barbecue. Theoretically you are forbidden to light fires on the
banks, but it has to be said that many boaters ignore this
byelaw... In any case take the greatest care, particularly in dry
weather. It is strictly forbidden to use a barbecue on board a
boat.
BARGE
Commercial barges are becoming ever rarer. You will still meet
a few on the larger rivers, but hardly any on the canals. You will
however, depending on the region, come across hotel-barges
and trip-boats. Just like commercial barges, these crafts always
have priority.
BICYCLES
Bicycles are a great complement to a cruise. You can bring
your own ones or hire some at the departure base. Each base
has bicycles for children as well as for adults (See page 6).
Helmets for children and babies are offered for free. Ask the
technician at the base to adjust the bikes to suit you, and to
show you where to stow them on board so that they don't get
in the way or fall overboard. You are responsible for the bikes,
and you will be given a lock and chain for each one.
BINOCULARS
If you own a pair of binoculars, take them along, it will add to
your enjoyment by watching wildlife. (In Germany, Poland and
Ireland a pair of binoculars is included in the boat's inventory).
LIFE ONBOARD
BOAT USERS BOOK
You will find a captain’s handbook on every boat, which
contains all information about the river, the tourist sights, the
telephone number and the opening hours to call for the base
or for emergency, instruction for the heating, oven, hobs,
toilets and all the on-board equipment.
This Captain’s handbook does not replace the initiation, but
allows you to find out forgotten information. Do not hesitate to
consult it during the cruise.
BREATHING ASSISTANCE
DEVICES
On most of the Penichettes, the batteries are sized to supply
all the on-board equipment as well as small accessories like
mobile phones, by plugging into 12 volts "cigarettes lighter"
on the dashboard, but cannot operate anything larger. We
cannot therefore guarantee the proper functioning of any
breathing assistance device. If you must use a respiratory
assistance device, be aware that we cannot guarantee a good
electric supply for a device of superior power to 120 watts.
You will have to provide a typical “cigarettes’ lighter” adapter of
12 /230 volt if your device is supplied in 230 volts.
Remember to bring with you an extension long enough to be
able to use your device in your cabin (at least 8 m for the
biggest Pénichettes ® ). Nevertheless, more and more of our
boats now have a 230 V socket that work when the boat is
connected to a quay (i.e.: All the Pénichettes in Germany).
Other boats (the Europa, the P1180FB, P1165FB, and
certain P1020FB or P1500FB) have one or several 230 V
socket on board, supplied by battery.
CAPTAIN
Whether he is piloting the boat or not, the captain is the
person responsible for the boat, the crew and their security.
Any other person over the age of 16 years (21 in Ireland and
18 in Germany) can pilot the boat but always under the
responsibility of the captain.
CLOTHES
Only take with you clothes that are practical and easy to wash,
like jeans, sweatshirts, T shirts etc. Bring a jersey for the
evenings as well as a waterproof or anorak in case of rain
(which we do not wish for you).
LIFE ONBOARD
COMPLAINTS
Any comments you have to make will be gratefully received,
as it is always our aim to improve the quality of our product.
Do ask for whatever you need or tell the base what's wrong. It
is no good getting a missing saucepan or corkscrew after your
return if you needed it from the start. We can only remedy
faults that we know about.
DOCTOR
If you need a doctor, ask in the nearest village, or at the closest
lock. Alternatively ring the base, and tell them your exact
position. Don’t forget that 112 is the international emergency
call number.
ENGINE NOISE
The boats are fitted with reasonably quiet diesel engines,
within soundproofed compartments. However all engines are
noisier when run at high revs. A little advice is try not to go flat
out, you will find it much quieter. In any case there are speed
limits on both rivers and canals.
EUROPA
The "Europa" class boats from Cardinal Boating Holidays are
British-outline boats, stylish and streamlined. They offer a
different sort of experience, yet just as tempting. You will
appreciate the space on board, as well as the level of comfort.
FAUNA AND FLORA
It's quite usual during your cruise to come across all sorts of
aquatic wildlife like wild geese and ducks, coots, herons etc.
The banks of rivers and canals are often well-wooded, with a
rich birdlife. Wild flowers equally tend to be numerous, as
waterways keep well away from towns and highways; with
little pollution, vegetation on the banks is as varied as it always
has been.
If the water often looks dirty, it's usually only because the
bottom of the river or canal is muddy, which makes the water
look murky. Bring with you guides to birdlife and wildflowers
and they will add even more to your holiday enjoyment. If you
care for the vegetation and wildlife, please do keep your
speed down on canals and rivers. High speed erodes the
banks and damages their ecosystems
FIRST AID KIT
All Pénichettes ® and Europas carry a small first aid kit, suitable
for treating minor cuts and bruises. If you have your own, bring
it along as it could be useful. Don't forget to bring along any
medication you take regularly, as it may not be easy to find
them during your cruise.
Practical informations A to Z
FLOODS AND DROUGHT
Rivers only can be subject to floods, mainly in springtime or
occasionally in autumn. In this case we may have to restrict
your cruise to canals only or possibly to switch departure base,
but it should not be necessary to cancel your cruise. The Rivers
Lot and Baïse are the most prone to flooding. Likewise, in case
of drought, some rivers can be impassable. It’s often the case
with the Garonne River. You should check on river levels
before starting out for your holiday.
GAMES
Don't forget to bring along your favorite games - cards, chess,
scrabble, monopoly etc. They will make for enjoyable family
evenings.
GANGWAY
All our boats carry a gangplank for getting ashore. If you have
elderly people in your crew, check that it's on board.
GASTRONOMY
Let yourself be tempted by the specialties of the region you
are cruising through. Restaurants offering haute cuisine are not
everywhere, but do not worry as virtually every village has its
bistro or café where you can taste good & fresh local dishes, at
moderate prices.
GLOVES
Don’t forget to use gloves for handling ropes. If you don’t have
any, you can buy them at your departure base.
INSECTS
We suggest bringing some insect repellent for use against flies
and mosquitoes, particularly in summer and autumn. Be
aware that our boats don’t provide any mosquito nets.
INSURANCE
All our boats are covered for civil responsibilities and damages.
The captain may still also be liable for additional penalties if he
has broken navigation rules or willfully caused an accident.
Passengers on board the boat, their personal effects and their
public liability are not covered by this insurance. The damage
deposit you pay over on arrival is the amount of the excess on
the boat's insurance. Hirers can opt to take out an accidental
damage waiver to protect against loss of deposit.
Practical informations A to Z
KEYS
When you take over, you will be given a key for the cabin door.
If you take good care to lock it, you can leave your boat
anywhere. But please remember that a boat is not a safe, so
don't leave any valuable belongings or papers on board, when
you leave the boat. Remember to close the curtains too. Also,
if you aren't using the bicycles, store them inside the boat.
LANGUAGE
If you don't speak the language of the country you're going to,
we suggest you to take a little phrasebook such as a Collins,
Roberts…; that way you'll be able to learn quite quickly a few
words and useful phrases.
LIFE ABOARD
Life aboard alternates between cruising, the search for an
attractive stopping place, going through locks, shopping, walks
and bicycle rides, and quite simply just lazing about. Your
holiday will be even more successful if you pack your watch at
the bottom of your bag and live to the rhythm of the sun.
LIFE JACKET
All our boats have sufficient life-belts and enough life jackets. If
you travel with children, please ask for life jackets of their size
(size of life jacket according to child’s weight, from 10 kg
upwards) when you arrive at your departure base.
LINEN ON BOARD
The bed clothes (sheets and pillowcases) will be given to you
at the departure base. We advise you to take towels and teatowels
with you. If you prefer, you can buy them at the base
on your departure day. Note that linen will be provided in
Ireland, Poland and on the Europa Boats in Germany (if
available).
LOCAL CUSTOMS
Do respect the traditions and customs of the area you are
going to. Often a smile and a chat will make for really
rewarding contacts with locals who are natural, straightforward,
warm and welcoming. Make the first move, even if you have
only a few words of the language, and you won't be
disappointed.
LOCAL EVENTS
Ask lock keepers and local shopkeepers about market days
and local festivities; many traditions still exist in remote villages
which can give a fascinating slant to your cruise.
LIFE ONBOARD
MAPS AND GUIDES
Your cruising guide shows shops, tourist attractions, the
position of villages, locks and other navigation features. Your
route is shown in great detail, and it is therefore
recommended to buy this guide either when you book or
when you arrive at the base.
MATCHES
On your boat, the cooking rings and the oven are gas fired, so
don’t forget to bring a good supply of matches or a lighter.
MEDICINE
Many of the villages and small towns you go through will have
a chemist's shop. Ask the lock-keepers or people in shops to
direct you to the nearest one.
MEETING PEOPLE
Meeting the local people should be one of the highlights of
your holiday. Do chat with the lock-keepers and shopkeepers
you meet. They are usually delightful and are a veritable mine
of good stories and useful information, but it's up to you to
make the first move.
MILEAGE
Your boat travels at around 6-8 kph, or a little faster going
downstream on rivers. Allowing for time spent going through
locks, shopping and sightseeing, you are likely to cover around
20 to 30 kilometres per day.
MONEY
Don't take too much cash with you, that way you can't lose it
or get it stolen. Use travelers cheques or credit cards which are
more and more widely accepted (in Holland Visa cards aren't
always accepted). Cash machines are also widespread. Always
have some change with you.
NUDITY
Canals and rivers are often far from built-up areas, and you are
completely isolated in some sections. We leave it entirely to
you as to how far you undress, but do take care not to shock
villagers and lock-keepers, whose ideas may be a little oldfashioned.
LIFE ONBOARD
ONE-WAY CRUISES
As spelt out in our brochure, we can never guarantee a oneway
cruise 100%. It only needs the client before you to cancel
his holiday at the last minute for the boat to be left in the
wrong place! That's why our bases reserve the right for
operational reasons or for reasons beyond their control to alter
the direction of your cruise or to alter a one-way cruise to an
out-and-back cruise.
You must ring the reservation service to check the
direction of your one-way cruise 48 hours before
departure. Should the latter occur, your one-way supplement
will of course be refunded. Please note that the supplement
does not cover the cost of transporting you and your crew.
Taxi, Train and Vehicle transfers are available, check these
information page 8.
PARASOLS
Our boats do not come with sun umbrellas as standard. If you
want one you can hire one for € 5 a week when you take the
boat. If you do use one on board, make sure you don’t lose it
going under bridges. It must not be fixed to avoid the table
being lost or broken.
PÉNICHETTE®
The name ‘Pénichette’ ® is in fact a Registered Trade Mark
referring exclusively to the range of boats designed and built
by Locaboat Plaisance ® .
POST
If you wish, you can have post and faxes addressed to the
base, so you can pick them up at the end of your cruise.
Addresses and fax numbers of the bases are shown under
access details.
READING
Bring along some good books. The villages you go past will
usually only have somewhere that sells newspapers, and
you're unlikely to be able to buy books.
RUBBISH
You will find on board a plastic dustbin liner for your rubbish,
but we suggest you buy an additional supply at the first
opportunity. Never leave rubbish on the banks or throw it
overboard. You will find rubbish containers or dustbins at
many locks and at established moorings. Please keep the
waterways clean, even if others fail to do so. Please, recycle
your rubbish whenever it’s possible.
Practical informations A to Z
SHOES
On board, we suggest you wear tennis shoes, trainers or
espadrilles. Avoid anything slippery, such as leather soles,
studd ed soles or high heels, and go for something
comfortable. A pair of Wellington boots comes in handy in wet
weather.
SHOPPING
You can stock up with food in virtually every village along your
route: consult the Guide for details. It will show you exactly
where to find a grocer, a baker, a butcher or a fishmonger. In
France, sometimes lock-keepers sell wine, eggs, chicken or
vegetables at very attractive prices. It's a good idea to make
use of your car on the day you start your cruise for heavy
items and a major shop. For those who wish, we can put
together a shopping basket of essential items. For details,
please see ‘the shopping basket form’ at the end of this book.
SIGHTSEEING
Just because you're on a boat there's no need to limit your
sightseeing to what you see on the bank. Often it's only a few
hundred yards walk or bicycle ride to a well known sight, a
medieval village or a Romanesque church that would be a
great shame to miss. You can even use a taxi. Your Carte
Guide will give full details of the must-see items in the area
you are going to.
STOPPAGE
All navigable waterways are closed for two to three weeks
each year, to enable necessary maintenance work to be
carried out. In general these stoppages take place out of
season, and the program is usually announced in March. We
will let you know straight away if your cruise coincides with a
stoppage. Should this happen, we may temporarily reposition
our departure base, and you could have to cruise in a different
direction.
SUNDECK
The decks of our boats are excellent for sunbathing. Make full
use of them but do take care not to burn, especially in the
south of France and Italy.
SUNTAN LOTION
On a holiday afloat you'll be spending most of your time out of
doors… so don't forget to bring your suntan lotion.
SWIMMING
It’s often possible to swim on your cruise whether you are on
a lake, rivers or canals. Ask at your departure base if and where
you can swim. Your swimming clothes might not just be used
for sunbathing only!
Practical informations A to Z
SWIMMING LADDERS
On certain itineraries it is easy and pleasant to be able to
swim. It is the case in the lakes in Germany or in Poland and
certain lakes in Ireland. To help you get back onboard, some of
our boats are now equipped with a swimming ladder (a fixed
one on the P1500FB, P1180FB and all Europas. A removable
swimming ladder on other models of Pénichette ® in Germany
and Ireland), that can only be used when the boats are
securely moored.
Don’t forget to lift it back on board when you restart the boat.
It is part of the inventory and you will be charged for it in case
of loss. Be careful: never go swimming before you have fixed
the ladder in place, you could find yourself unable to get back
on board, even with the help of someone who has stayed on
board. It is advisable to always leave one person onboard of
your boat.
TELEPHONE
Your mobile phone can be used on the waterways almost
everywhere except in wild & remote areas. Don’t forget the
international code of the country you are in. Leave your
mobile number with the departure base before you leave.
THEFT
To date there have only been a very few cases of theft from
boats. Although it can be locked, your boat is not a strong box
and when you leave it don't forget to lock it, to close the
windows and to draw the curtains. Don't leave valuable items
on board; it’s the first security rule.
TIMETABLE
Don’t set yourself too tight a schedule. The greatest pleasure
of this sort of holiday is spontaneity and making chance
discoveries. Put your watch away in your suitcase and let
yourself be ruled only by the rising and setting of the sun.
TIPS
In France it's customary to give the lockkeeper a small tip. In
Holland when you go through certain bridges you would have
to pay a small sum and this is sometimes left to your
discretion.
TOLLS
See the information given for each country.
TOOLS
You don't need to bring a toolbox with you. Our engineers
have everything necessary at the base. Just call the base if you
break down and explain where you are and what has
happened.
LIFE ONBOARD
TORCH
Remember to take a torch with you, with some spare
batteries. You'll need it when returning to your boat at night,
and if you moor away from civilisation.
WASHING
It will help you for mini-washdays if you bring along some
string and some clothes pegs. Only use biodegradable
washing powders or liquids.
WEATHER
The weather you enjoy will depend on the area you are going
to; but whatever the weather, living on board makes for a
different sort of holiday experience. Do remember that
holidays on water are always damper, so take an extra woolly
with you whatever the time of year.
YACHT
During your cruise, you will meet other private boats, motor or
sailing ships. Going through the locks or cruising along side
these boats, sometimes luxurious, are part of the enjoyable
moments. A little courtesy and friendliness is the rule between
sailors.
ADVICE FOR NAVIGATION
This is a region that requires more attention. The tides play
an important role and the level of the water in the lagoon is
generally quite shallow. As this level is not deep, it's very
important to respect the buoys and to stay in mid channel.
If you don't respect this rule, there is a great risk of running
aground. Refloating a boat involves important costs. These
are covered neither by the insurance nor by the accidental
damage waiver and will be for you to pay should this
happen. Contrary to the canals or tributaries, the breakdown
service can only intervene, on the lagoon, by boat, means,
depending on the tides, the intervention might only be
carried out after several hours and a wait of 4 - 6 hours
isn't im possible. You should take this into account. Take note
that the navigation on the lagoon is much easier than on the
Brenta Canal – where the locks are much narrower with a violent
current. These locks require skillfulness and at least two
agile people to help with the manoeuvres. During your initiation,
the instructor will go through all the details. On the Brenta Canal
and the Sile, some locks and bridges are open at set times.
These are examples of 2008 to give an idea because the 2009
ones aren’t known at the time we are making this book. They
will be given at the base. Going through the lifting bridges is
free except for ‘Torre di Fine’ (€ 20 per passage) which is
ADVICE FOR NAVIGATION
In Germany you can use the waterways and locks for free.
Usually, there aren't any closures during the season but
exceptionally the lock of Furstenberg will be closed from
mid-September 2009 – Ask for more information. Clients
that don't have a licence can navigate in the region between
Schwerin, Dömitz (Elbe) and Liebenwalde (north of
Berlin). The lakes of Muritz and Plau must only be crossed
by the most direct channel following the signalisation. It is
FISHING
the region of the Mecklenburg lakes is famous as one of the
most outstanding fishing grounds of Europe, encompassing
the river Havel, known for eel, zander and perch, as well as
some 20 lakes, all covered by the fishing permit available at
Furstenberg. All can hope for a good catch here, and can
expect to enjoy pike, carp or turbot on the menu. If you are
ADVICE FOR NAVIGATION
Amsterdam
The Vecht and the lock at Loosdrecht are open from the 1 st April to 1 st November. The
locks and bridges on the other waterways stay closed on Sundays until the 15 th April
and after the 15 th October. When you take the boat the staff will give you full instructions
on how to go through them and will give you a Log book and an ‘Almanach’ (in Dutch)
containing detailed information. When you go through certain bridges, the ‘Bridgeman’
will present you a clog on the end of a pole, in which you should put a coin (from 0.50
to 2 €). When a bridge is controlled by lights but you can pass underneath without the
bridge opening, you can ignore the lights. If you are the first boat to pass this bridge you
should sound your horn to alert the bridge-keeper, who will action the lights, first of all a
green light then a red one (in preparation of the opening) then two green lights, which
mean you can go through. Opening hours are different depending on the various itineraries.
You will find them in the description of your cruise. When calculating the height of
your boat, do not forget the items that might also be on the roof, (such as bikes) and
allow a security margin never less than 20cms. Crossing the town of Utrecht
(Oudelgraacht) isn’t allowed with the Flying Bridge Pénichettes ® , these have to bypass
the town using the Rijn Kanaal. Any damage caused due to the non compliance
of this instruction will be charged to the captain of the boat
ADVICE FOR NAVIGATION
In Ireland, the locks work with a magnetic card that can be
bought at the base for the price of € 13. Locks are open
everyday from 9am to 8pm.The same card allows access to
the toilets in public ports, showers, washing machines and
also to empty the used water holding tanks. Spending the
night in public ports is free but costs about € 15 in private
marinas. It is forbidden to spend the night anchored on the
lakes. Leaving from Leitrim and going south, the locks are
manual and cost about € 1.50. Navigation on the lakes is
ADVICE FOR NAVIGATION
In Poland, a navigation licence is obligatory. The signs that are in
force are the international ones: lateral, cardinal or isolated danger.
A good pair of binoculars is really useful. Navigation is allowed
from sunrise until one hour after the sun has gone down.
Use of the waterways is free. You have to pay to go through the
locks (there are only two in the system) and the price in 2008
was 8 slotys. The Polish navigable system is a network of lakes
connected by quite short canals (5 kms maximum). In general
you are not allowed to moor on these canals but the instructions
are quite clear. The lakes are sometimes quite deep (50 metres)
.Crossing the Piscz Lake is forbidden if the wind is stronger than
force 3. A voluntary work service assures the security on the
lakes. In Poland you are allowed to drop anchor, but not on the
navigation channel. Sometimes in high season, there can be a lot
of traffic (small motorboats, taxis, scooters, sailing boats). The professionals
always have the priority. It is not advised to spend the
night at anchor in the middle of the lakes because the weather
can be very changeable. On the other hand, contrary to the
German lakes, it is authorized and even advised to go and drop
anchor in the areas where the water is shallower such as the
reed-beds. In the ports, the price is, in general, based on the
number of bollards that are used. It is therefore preferable to
moor the back of the boat to the quay.
The prices mentionned above are valid for the regular routes between 8
am and 7 pm, except Sundays and holidays. This price list (on
01.01.2009) can change at any time! In some countries you will be
cash. Transfers from/to the base to/from the airport or train station can
GENERAL INFORMATION
GENERAL CONDITIONS – CAR
TRANSFER SERVICE
1 – PARKING
The client undertakes to park the vehicle in
the enclosed car park of the arrival / departure
base for the duration of the cruise.
(see page 34)
2 – VEHICLE TRANSFER
The vehicle transfer will be carried out by
an outside service, a partner of LOCABOAT
(hereafter known as ‘The Subcontractor’).
The SUBCONTRACTOR undertakes to
organize the transfer of the client’s vehicle
no earlier than the morning following the
departure and no later than the day before
arrival as per the hiring contract. In the case
of the cruise being interrupted, whatever
the cause,THE SUBCONTRACTOR cannot
guarantee that the vehicle will have been
transferred to the arrival base. If due to
unforeseeable reasons the transfer has not
been carried out LOCABOAT will refund the
amount paid for the transfer, the client not
being entitled to any indemnity. The client
will then have to organize the recuperation
of his own vehicle.
3 – STATE OF THE VEHICLE
Both on arrival and on departure a note of
the state of the vehicle will be drawn up
between the client and, on behalf of the
SUBCONTRACTOR, a local representative
from LOCABOAT. LOCABOAT undertakes to
have the document validated by the SUB-
CONTRACTOR. The client is bound to hand
over to the SUBCONTRACTOR by the intermediation
of LOCABOAT his vehicle in perfect
working order (all levels of oils, cooling
liquids correct and the brakes checked) with
a sufficient quantity of fuel to ensure the
car transfer (the fuel is always at the charge
of the client) as well as all necessary items
for driving the car (keys, car’s papers etc)
and to communicate all necessary or specific
information concerning driving the car;
LOCABOAT undertakes to transmit all of this
to the SUBCONTRACTOR. It is agreed that a
vehicle that does not meet normal circulation
requirements or for which the administrative
situation is not in full compliance
with French law will not be accepted.
4 – INSURANCE
A specific insurance for ‘car transfer’ subscribed
for by the SUBCONTRACTOR, guarantees,
for the period of transfer only, the
risks connected to driving clients’ vehicles
(third part cover, damage to the vehicle and
its accessories with cover up to a maximum
amount as mentioned in the contract.
Personal items left in the vehicles as well as
theft of any exterior accessories are not covered.
If the value of the vehicle is superior to the
maximum guaranteed the client must provide
a certificate from their insurers absolving
the SUBCONTRACTOR, LOCABOAT or
their insurers from any liability in excess of
this figure. In the absence of this document
the transfer of the vehicle will be refused.
5 – ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE
The SUBCONTRACTOR undertakes to
inform the client of any damage to the
vehicle in the shortest delay. The guarantee
‘damage to possessions’ in the car transfer
insurance contract only covers material
damage to the vehicles (to a limited maximum
amount); the other damages (material
or not, consecutive or not) such as the
repatriation of the vehicle and its passengers,
lengthening of the holiday, replacement
vehicle, loss of enjoyment etc, are
excluded.
5.1. Accidental damage without the
immobilisation of the vehicle
The client will be given a copy of the accident
declaration form. The client will send
an estimate of the cost of the repairs to the
SUBCONTRACTOR as soon as possible. If
the amount for the repairs necessitates an
expert appraisal of the vehicle, the SUB-
CONTRACTOR will forward to the client’s
garage the expert’s report and will settle the
payment directly for the repairs (according
to the estimate or the expert’s report).
5.2. Accidental damage rendering the
vehicle immobile for a short duration
The SUBCONTRACTOR will in no way take
any initiative for the repairs. If the client
wishes that the vehicle be repaired as soon
as possible he must give written proof to
the SUBCONTRACTOR. The SUBCONC-
TRACTOR will make it his business to
declare the accident, get any eventual
expert appraisement and make the payment
for the repairs.
5.3. Accidental damage rendering the
vehicle immobile for a long duration
The vehicle will be towed to the garage or
the brand’s main dealer nearest to where
the accident happened. The client will have
the possibility to have the repairs carried
out in this garage or in another garage of
his choice. The client will be given a copy of
the accident declaration form. The client will
send a quote for the cost of the repairs to
the SUBCONTRACTOR as soon as possible.
If the amount of the repairs necessitates an
expert appraisal, the SUBCONTRACTOR will
forward to the client’s garage the expert’s
report and will settle the payment directly
for the repairs (according to the estimate or
the expert’s report).
6 – BREAKDOWNS
The SUBCONTRACTOR cannot be held
responsible for breakdowns that happen
during the transfer of a vehicle. However,
the client hereby authorises the SUBCON-
TRACTOR to carry out such repairs as shall
be necessary so as to ensure the security of
the vehicle and avoid its immobilization or
dangerous positioning: the cost of the
repairs being at the charge of the client
who hereby accepts them. In the case of
nonpayment of any amounts due for these
repairs, the SUBCONTRACTOR has the right
to retain the vehicle as long as they have
not been refunded these costs.
7 – PAYMENT
The total amount for the car transfer must
be paid on the start day.
8 – APPLICABLE LAW
By distinct agreement without which the
present contract will be deemed to have
not been properly concluded, and where
the client does not reside in France, any
disputes to which the present contract
could give rise concerning its validity, its
interpretation, its execution, its termination,
their consequences and pursuits and which
have not been settled on a friendly basis
between the client and the SUBCONTRAC-
TOR, will be submitted to the competent
court of law in the place of residence of the
SUBCONTRACTOR; The applicable law for
the present contract is French law. For convenience,
a translation in any other language
can be established; however, in the
case of a dispute, only the French text will
be taken into account.
GENERAL HIRING CONDITIONS
GENERAL HIRING CONDITIONS
Suitability
The boat’s driver must be an adult. He is responsible for
the boat and equipment that is entrusted to him, and
also for his crew and anyone on board. Should the driver
be unfit to assume this responsibility, the boatyard
reserves the right to offer a holiday tied up to the quayside
or to limit the extent of the cruise during some or all
of the period, or to refuse handover of the boat altogether,
exclusively at the fault of the driver.
Insurance
The boat is covered for accidental damages, claims from
third parties arising because of the boat, accidental pollution.
Should any accident occur, the financial responsibility
of the boat’s driver shall not exceed the amount of the
damage deposit except in the loss of rights or exclusions
hereinafter mentioned where the boat’s driver is responsible
in full for all damages and claims. Fines and penalties
are always excluded from insurance covers. The driver
and all persons on board, along with their personal
effects and their own third party liability are not covered
by this insurance policy. The boat’s driver and crew can
take out individual insurance for themselves and at their
expense to cover these risks. Likewise, breakage or loss
of the boat’s equipment, as well as a lack of care of the
boat, are not covered by this policy.
Exclusions: Damage, loss, third-party claims and expense
resulting from
- inexcusable or intentional fault, deliberate disregard for
navigation or safety regulations, violation of navigational
restrictions or stoppages,
- towing,
- acts committed by any landside crew member,
- criminal use of the boat, its equipment or tenders;
- piloting in an intoxicated state, under the influence of
narcotics or substances, even if for medical purposes,
which affect the mind or capacity to react,
- use of the boat for purposes other than personal enjoyment,
- exceeding the number of passengers authorised by law,
- navigation outside authorised areas, at night, or in winds
in excess of 3 on the Beaufort scale,
- false declarations, as well as any malicious act committed
in collusion with any person on board.
Damage deposit – fuel advance
The damage deposit must be paid on the day of departure
before embarking and shall be returned at the end
of the trip if the boat and all of its equipment are
returned in proper working order, at the agreed time and
place, if the boat has not been subject to or has caused
any damage to third parties, and if all amounts due pertaining
to the trip or services have actually been collected.
This deposit guarantees payment for expense stemming
from: - accidental damage that the boat, its equipment or
tenders have been subjected to or have caused, - breakage
or loss of equipment, improper maintenance of the
boat and its equipment or tenders during the trip, boat
abandoning and late return of the boat. Through explicit
dispensation and excluding cases of loss of rights or the
exclusions stipulated in the INSURANCE section, if the
boat’s driver has taken out the ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE
WAIVER option, LOCABOAT renounces a claim on the
total payment of the damage deposit in case of accidental
damage caused to the boat, structures or third parties
due to the boat. This measure applies only if - the boat’s
driver has not committed any inexcusable or intentional
fault, has not had any disregard for safety, has complied
with navigation regulations (especially in case of stranding,
damage to superstructures and fittings during a collision
with a structure), has respected the information stipulated
in the LOCABOAT book, the Logbook and informa-
tion provided by the departure base pertaining to the trip
and piloting of the boat. - the boat’s driver has undertaken
to inform LOCABOAT and remains responsible for
breakage or loss of items that are part of the boat’s
equipment, for which the absence of or collision with a
structure, has respected the information stipulated in the
LOCABOAT’s documentation or provided by the departure
base pertaining to the trip and piloting of the boat. A fuel
advance must also be settled on the day of departure
and will be deducted from the amount due for fuel
according to engine hour meter.
Accidents
The boat’s driver must notify the hire-firm immediately by
telephone of any accident. The latter will give the course
to follow. The boat’s driver must not have the boat
repaired without having obtained approval from the hirefirm.
In addition, the boat’s driver agrees to complete and
sign the accident report, and to have it countersigned by
any third parties or witnesses involved. The boat’s driver,
whether the cause or victim of the accident, shall not
claim any compensation in the event his trip is compromised.
The boat’s driver is wholly and personally responsible
at all times for any consequences of any accident
arising from an exclusion stipulated in the INSURANCE
section or for which penal and civil liability of a
crewmember is sought after without pertaining to the
boat or its equipment.
Embarkation
The boat will be placed at the disposal of the boat’s captain
after the following formalities have been fulfilled:
payment of the guarantee-deposit, fuel advance, payment
of any amounts still due, signature of the hire contract
and, in France, issuing of the carte de plaisance (pleasure
craft card) and inventory of the equipment on board. The
boat’s driver will receive all theoretical and practical information
required for proper progress of his trip. The place
of embarkation may be a different base in the case of an
event rendering embarkation impossible at the scheduled
place, and this is not grounds for cancelling the trip.
The boat’s driver may legitimately refuse the boat offered
him if it does not correspond to the model that was
reserved, unless the parties have made a prior arrangement,
if the equipment essential to the successful
progress of the trip is not in a fit condition to function or
if the state of cleanliness and orderliness of the boat is
not in accordance with what he has a right to expect in
regard to the fair and regular practice of the profession.
Disembarkation
The boat must be returned to the place, on the date, and
at the time established by contract, other than for unforeseeable
and unavoidable occurrence, outside the control
of the hirer. The boat is returned to the hire-firm in the
same condition as when it was placed in his care, with
the inventory of contents drawn up on departure serving
as evidence, if necessary, and in a proper state of cleanliness.
The hire-firm reserves the right to have the boat’s
captain refund all expenses involved by a late return or
the abandonment of the boat during the cruise.
Use of the boat by the boat’s driver
The driver must comply with the rules of river navigation,
and also with the instructions given by the hire-firm and
by the river authorities. The boat’s driver shall shall restrict
his cruising to those waters permitted by the operator. He
shall not sail after nightfall, nor shall he engage in towing,
subhiring or lending the boat. The boat’s driver shall
refrain from exceeding the maximum number of people
allowed on board.
Non-navigability of the waterway/navigation restrictions
compensation for any interruption or limitation in the
cruise in relation to the trip provided for in the contract,
GENERAL INFORMATION
resulting from a close-down of navigable waterways for
technical reasons or administrative police reasons, strikes,
flood or drought and other adverse weather conditions as
well as for any other circumstance beyond its control. In
these conditions, LOCABOAT can alter the places and
dates of embarkation or disembarkation, on a boat of
equal or greater size. If these same events render the
whole trip impossible, the sums paid will be placed
toward payment for a subsequent trip to be agreed upon
by the parties. The hirefirm is not bound to provide a
refund. Any temporary interruption doesn’t give right to a
refund.
Breakdowns
LOCABOAT undertakes to provide assistance in the event
of a breakdown or damage as quickly as possible, fairly
and within the rules of its conduct of business, during
working hours, seven days a week. This service is free of
charge except in cases where the boat’s captain’s behaviour
is at fault.
- Breakdowns not attributable to the boat’s driver If the
grounding time due to breakdown exceeds a period of
twenty-four hours, the hire-firm shall refund the hirer or
boat’s driver, prorata of the unexpired hire-time, the
amount of the hiring, excluding any other form of compensation.
The duration of the grounding is deducted as
from the time when the boat’s driver notifies the hirefirm
of the existence of the breakdown. The boat’s driver
shall refrain from any action of his own, not dictated
by necessity or urgency.
- Breakdown attributable to the boat’s driver If the breakdown
or immobilisation of the boat is attributable to the
boat’s driver, the latter has no right whatsoever to any
indemnity for deprivation of enjoyment of the hire.
LOCABOAT shall then have the right to bill the hirer for
the expenses incurred in the repairs.
Bicycles
Bicycles are placed in the HIRER’S care under his entire
responsibility. They are hired out in good working order,
are clean and fitted with an antitheft device. The HIRER
must check the condition and working order of the bicycles
when he takes charge of them. Helmets are not provided
except for child bikes. The cost of the hire which is
displayed at each base, is payable in advance. In the case
of theft, loss or damage, LOCABOAT will invoice the hirer,
according to the tariff currently in force displayed at the
return base, the expenses of making good, repairing or
replacing the bicycle. LOCABOAT disclaims all liability for
any accident which occurs with a bicycle that has been
hired or provided, due to misuse or carelessness by the
user.
Applicable law
This contract is governed by the laws of the country
where the service is executed and in the official language
of that country. In the event of litigation, only those courts
depending on LOCABOAT’s head office have jurisdiction.
