The youth from this area haveorganised themselves into apeace group. We met them inNapeipelu village, also in NakichumetParish. They used to beraiders, and formed this groupafter the disarmament. EverySaturday they sit and discuss things pertainingto peace. When people steal cows theygo and talk to their people so that the stolen cattlewill be returned. They travel to many differentplaces in the district to try and stop the fighting. We went to the kraals at Lorukumo in Matany Sub-County. Most of the youth here are herders.Onyang Atucho is one of them. He told us,“I rear cattle. I have built up these animals from the few that we managed to save from the raids. My brothers also have animals. At the moment our animals are so healthy because there is enoughgrass and water. We are getting plenty of very good quality milk and blood. If I need veterinarydrugs for ticks or something else, I can sell one animal or sell charcoal to get them from the market. These animals also enable me to pay dowry.”Onyang lives very close to the barracks so he doesn’t need to take his animals to the protectedkraals each evening. The army is so near to his place that if there is a raid they will hear and comeand help protect them.We think groups like this are very effective. They are recognised by the government andthey are recognised by people across Karamoja. They are not paid. Instead they have their ownways of collecting money. There are also wellwishers, like the leaders of the different villagesand some organisations who donate moneyto them as a token of appreciation. The groupdeposits the money in their account and uses itwhen they need to sit or go somewhere for thework of peace. The people in this picture are from the groupand represent every side of Napak District.22LorukumoNakichumet Parish
