President’s CornerAs part of our Unit 123’s mission to grow and promote bridge, we are putting emphasison increasing bridge activities in the Intermediate/New players (I/N) segment andthe Junior/Youth Bridge segment. Addressing these two segments would allow us topromote the near-term and long-term growth of bridge. For I/N players, we are bringing back the excitement of the “Stars of Tomorrow” tournament. This game is fully funded by Unit 123, so it is completely free to you. Seepage 1 for more information. In the area of Junior Bridge, I had the opportunity to visit with Katherine Rehak tolearn about her junior bridge program at Whitney Young School in Chicago. A chemistryteacher at Whitney Young , Katherine has been teaching student bridge for the last16 years. Steve Cheston, a volunteer, has been assisting Katherine in bridge lessonsand supervised game sessions at the school as well. It is wonderful to see individualslike Katherine and Steve devoting their own time to bringing this intellectually stimulatinggame to young minds. If you have good ideas or wish to volunteer your time tohelp young people to learn and enjoy bridge, please let us know.Joe Stokes, our board member and Chair, Junior Bridge Committee, has convinced usthat MiniBridge is a great way to popularize bridge to young people. Children at Grade4 or even younger, who can add up high card points, are potential candidates to learnthis simplified version of bridge. In the article below, Joe outlines how MiniBridgeworks. When you are around young people next time, give it a try; you may all have agood time!Bob Young, CCBA PresidentGreat family game—MiniBridgeThe following was submitted by CCBA Board Member Joe Stokes:If you are looking for a card game for the whole family, consider MiniBridge, a fun gamethat includes many of the aspects of bridge, the game we love. MiniBridge was developedin France and the Netherlands and has been used widely in British schools.MiniBridge requires four players in two partnerships. The cards are dealt as in bridge, and each player counts his high-card points. Starting with the dealer, each player announceshow many points he has; the partnership with the most points will play the hand.If the points are divided 20-20 between the two partnerships, redeal. The declarer is theplayer with the most points (or the first to mention his points if the two partners have thesame number of points). The declarer’s partner is the dummy. The dummy is revealed, and the declarer must decide whether to name a trump suit or to play in NT. The declareralso decides whether to play in a part score or a game (9 tricks in NT, 10 tricks withhearts or spades as trump, and 11 tricks with clubs or diamonds as trumps – sound familiar?).In a part score, the declarer must make at least seven tricks. The defender to the leftof the declarer makes the opening lead, and play begins. (Think how good your leads willbe when you see dummy before leading!)Part scores earn the trick score, where, as in bridge, hearts and spades score 30 a trick, clubs and diamonds score 20 a trick, and NT scores 40 for the first trick and 30 for subsequenttricks (or 30 a trick plus 10). If the declarer tries for game and makes it, he gets a300-point bonus in addition to the trick score. When declarer fails to make a part score orgame, the defenders get 50 per trick for each undertrick. The ACBL recommends this asa beginning game for grades 4 through 8. Younger kids might be able to play as well, aslong as they can count high card points and understand the concepts of taking tricks andtrumps. You could also develop a simpler scoring system for the younger kids. Why not give MiniBridge a try with your children or grandchildren? Let us know how itgoes and how your kids or grandkids like the game. Do not be timid, use penalty doublesBy Ginny and Jeff SchuettDoubles in bridge can take many forms, and in most cases, the first round doubleis intended for takeout. But penalty doubles are very underutilizedand in the case of matchpoint duplicatescoring, are one of the best ways toimprove your score. Most players are alittle timid and allow their opponents tooverbid and not get doubled. Here aresome typical situations where you shouldconsider a penalty double.1. Responder starts with a redouble – thisis a typical time to consider a penaltydouble as opener has about 12-14 HCPminimum, the takeout doubler has about13 HCP, and responder has about 10+HCP, so the partner of the takeout doublerhas only four HCP or less.If they have no good fit, even the onelevel is doubtful, but the two level andabove is really doubtful as long as openeror responder have good trumps.N E S W1♠ (Dbl) Rdl (P)P 2 any - 99% is only a 4-card suitand they are groping to find a fit. If Southhas four decent trumps or North has fourdecent trumps, this is a great time to doublefor penalty.2. Overcaller shows a two-suited handlike Michaels or the Unusual 2NT andresponder has good values and 4+ cardsin their suits. Start with a double to implyyou want to penalize them, and then theopener should NOT bid without an unusualhand or double to penalize them aswell.N E S W1♦ (2♦ ) Dbl (2♠ )South = ♠ KQ108 ♥AK97 ♦7 ♣ Q982North should NOT bid without an usuallydistributional hand, and here Southshould double and expect to defeat 2♠many tricks. Note that often it is best forNorth to lead trumps. It prevents declarerfrom being able to ruff losers in the“other” suit.3. Partner opens and they overcall 1NTand you have 10+ HCP. This is a penaltydouble, NOT negative or takeout. They rarely have a place to go.N E S W1♦ (1NT) DblSouth = ♠ KQ10 ♥A9752 ♦J7 ♣Q98Note: an important corollary here is thatall suits bid by South are natural, usually6+ and weak, non-forcing.4. Doubling part scores – If partner isbidding your short suits and they keepbidding your long suit, consider a penaltydouble. Good trumps, not just longtrumps are important. For exampleN E S W1♦ (1♠) P (2♠)3♣ (3♠)Double with South = ♠KJ108 ♥T97432♦7 ♣J9Pass with South = ♠9732 ♥T9732 ♦Q2♣K95. Doubling Sacrifices – Make sure thatif you bid game intending to make it andthe opponents sacrifice (usually when3you are vulnerable and they are not vulnerable),never let the opponents playtheir contract undoubled. Either take thepush to five of your contract or doublethem.N E S W1♥ (1♠ ) 2♠ (Limit+♥ ) (3♠)4♥ (4♠)Dbl with South = ♠ K108 ♥T972 ♦K7♣AJ96 (Minimum with good ♠)Bid 5♥ with South = ♠2 ♥A9732 ♦KQ2♣AJ92 (Max with short ♠)Most players would improve their scoresdramatically if they made more penaltydoubles. Don’t be discouraged if theymake a game once in a while. It still paysto double.Ginny & Jeff Schuett – bridge teaching, directing, play phone 847-940-7236Email=jgschuett2@comcast.netTournament Calendar*Free 299 Stars of Tomorrow, May 18-19, Darien, ILDistrict 13 Spring Sectional at the Clubs, May 13-19, Chicago areaDistrict 9 Illini Memorial Day Regional, May 21-27, Hawthorn Suites, 101 TradeCenter Drive, Champaign*ABA-CCBA Sectional, June 1- 2, Chicago (See ad on page 12)Rockin Crystal Lake District 9 Split Regional, June 17-23, Holiday Inn, Route31 and Three Oaks Road, Crystal Lake*SummerFest Regional, July 8-14, St. Charles, IL ( See ad on page 6)Madison Sectional, July 26-28, Madison, WISummer Nationals, August 1-11, Atlanta, GACCBA Summer Sectional at the Clubs, Aug. 12-18, Various ClubsHarris, MI Regional, August 19-25, Harris, MISt. Louis Regional, August 19-26, St. Louis, MO*Labor Day Sectional, August 30-September 2, SkokieUnit 9 Rockford Sectional, Sept. 6-8, RockfordFort Wayne Regional, Sept. 9-15, Fort Wayne, IN*Central States Regional, Oct. 21-27, Lake Geneva, WI*FallFest, Nov. 8-11, LombardFall Nationals, Nov. 28- Dec. 8, Phoenix, AZCCBA Winter Sectional at the Clubs, Dec. 9-15, Various Clubs

Let’s discuss importance of using redouble bidWinning withWimpyBy Jim DiebelLet’s continue with our discussion from lasttime about using Redoubles. Previously, Itouched on a number of sequences whereRedouble was strength showing over anopponent’s takeout double of partner’sopening bid. That is its most common use.Since you can only use the Redouble bidwhen one of your opponents has madesome type of double, you want this call toshow something fairly specific.Under no circumstances should you employa Redouble for business, unless you arereasonably convinced that you will be ableto penalize the opponents in the suit theyare likely to bid for more than you wouldhave scored in your doubled contract.West North East South1♥ Dbl Rdbl1♠ 2♥ 2♠ 4♥Pass Pass Dbl ??4♥x here will score 590 or 790 if youmake it. If South Redoubles, it will usuallyforce the opponents into bidding 4♠. UnlessSouth thinks he can beat 4♠ for 800 ormore, he should pass.West North East South1♥ 2♣ Dbl ??If South thinks his partner can make a clubcontract, he should pass or raise. East’sdouble was not for penalty and there is virtuallyno chance for the partnership to playin either 2♣ x or 2♣ xx.When you have a suit fit withpartner, it is always better to raisethan to redouble.East has made a negative double, showingvalues, spades, and perhaps diamonds. IfSouth holds some values and clubs, heshould raise and force the opponents tosearch for their fit on the 3-level, rather thancheaply on the 2-level.I can’t stress this strongly enough: Whenyou have a suit fit with partner, it is alwaysbetter to raise than to redouble. This naturally begs the question: Whatshould a Redouble show here? While there is no universal consensus ofwhich I am aware, I can offer two constructivesuggestions. With no agreement, I believe the Redoubleshould show values which partnerwould not otherwise expect. West hasshown an opening hand, and East has suggestedenough values to compete on thetwo level.North rates to hold 10 points or more. IfSouth holds, 10-13 points, he would liketo share this information with partner. The Redouble here would simply announcethat someone at the table is perhapsa bit light, and that North-Southmight easily hold the balance of power.Rosenkranz Double/Redoubleis often misused. The other possibility, and the one I recommend, would be to treat the Redouble as aconventional call promising the Ace orKing in partner’s overcalled suit. This convention is known as theRosenkranz Double/Redouble and is oftenmisused. If you hold the Ace or King ofpartner’s suit and three or more pieces, itis usually better to raise than to Redoubleand take up no bidding space. Some players use the Rosenkranz xx todifferentiate between a raise with a highhonor and a raise without one, but I believethe effect of jamming the auctionmore than compensates for this. Therefore, I propose that the best use ofthe Rosenkranz xx is to promise a doubletonin partner’s suit with a high honor. If you think that this won’t come up veryoften to be useful, you’d be more rightthan wrong, but given that the Redoubletakes up no bidding room, you want it toshow something very helpful.Another good use for a redouble occurswhen you and your partner are looking forstoppers in unbid suits in order to bid3NT. The redouble should promise theAce in the suit.5South holds:♠ AQJ84 ♥ 85 ♦ A85 ♣ QJ3East South West North1♠ Pass 2♣Pass 3♣ Pass 3♦Dbl RdblNorth’s 3♦ call was almost certainly a stopper-showingcall looking for 3NT, suggestinga diamond stopper, but perhaps no heartstopper. Occasionally, it would be a cue-bidlooking for a diamond slam.Had East not doubled, South would havebeen forced to bid 3S, as he holds no heartstopper. East’s double allows South theopportunity to redouble, promising the Aceof diamonds. This may help North get to a club slam, butmore importantly, warn him that there maybe a problem with the heart suit in 3NT.This might allow the partnership to get toeither a good 5-2 fit spade game, or a clubgame, rather than a questionable 3NT contract.Any time the opponents make a leaddirectingdouble, you should treat it as achance to show something you might otherwisehave not been able to show.New Highland Park gameStarting May 7th, The Birchwood CountryClub will host an ACBL sanctionedgame every other Tuesday night at 7 p.m.from May through September. The club islocated at 1174 Park Avenue West, HighlandPark, just east of Route 41 off ParkAvenue. The club will meet roughly everytwo weeks through September. Spotlighton ClubsAmericanBridge andSocial ClubRon Helman’s retirement did not turn outthe way he had planned.Being a workaholic, his original plan afterselling his business in 1993 was tobuild a consulting business. But his newventure was “slow to take off, so thatgave me time to go to a bridge game heldon Friday nights at the Executive Place inChicago, which was only four blocksfrom my place,” Ron said.Although he had not played bridge in20 years, having quit when he enteredthe corporate world, he quickly gotback into the game.In fact, he decided that he would start abridge game and that would tide himover until his consulting business gotoff the ground.“I advertised in the Chicago Trib, theSun-Times and the Reader, and I listedit as a bridge game for singles. Twentyninepeople showed up for the firstgame, which was held on a Wednesdaynight,” Ron said.“Soon every Wednesday was not oftenenough, because I was drawing 70 people,so I started a Sunday game, andDistrict 13 Spring Regional Memoriessoon I had to add another day because Iwas drawing so many people.”After about 18 months, Ron walked intothe CCBA office in Chicago, took theclasses to become a director, and got hisgames sanctioned by the ACBL. He haddecided that since the bridge games weredoing well and his consulting businesswas slow, that he would put his energyinto being a club owner/director.The club has moved three times since itbegan, and now meets at 8950 GrossPoint Road, Skokie, at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays,Thursdays, and Fridays, at 5:30p.m. on Sundays, and 11 a.m. on Saturdays. All the games are open pairs, exceptfor the Friday game, which is open Swiss.Ron said people come to his games, earnpoints, of course, but they also come becauseof the friendships they have formedwith the other players. When asked what advice he would givebeginning players, Ron said, “Take instructionfrom the best teachers that youcan, and not from the people you playbridge with, because you are probably asgood as they are.”7
