Cinderella Team Wins 4 NABC Swiss Team Events
Four women who call
themselves the
“Cinderella Team”
were among those
who had a successful
tournament at the
50th Spring North
American Bridge
Championships.
The event was held
March 8 - 18 in St.
Louis, Mo.
The 299er Cinderella
Team won four Swiss
Team events. Team
members were
Marlene Beranek of
Glenview, Mary
Hilman of Mt. Prospect, Carol Duffy and Marilyn Richards, both of Wilmette.
“There were so many 299er events to play in, and we had a blast,” said Marlene. “We
had interesting hands, met lovely people and laughed so hard it hurt. We cannot wait to
play in future tournaments.”

An Open Letter to CCBA Members
The Almost Impossible -
Searching and Finding Tournament Sites
Have you ever wondered about the logistics of staging a
bridge tournament? Or, do you just come to play and
hopefully enjoy the experience? Many of us take for
granted the availability of tournaments, just as we do many
of the things around us. Let me give you an insight to
tournament planning. I have found it interesting, rewarding,
challenging, frustrating, time-consuming and many other
adverbs that might apply.
Providing tournaments for the players is one of the most
important responsibilities of the Board of Directors. Different
Board Members have different tournament tasks
assigned to them. One of my areas of responsibility is
finding sites for each tournament that is offered by ACBL
Unit 123, the “Chicago Unit”. Sometimes this has been
relatively easy, but not for the past almost two years. Finding sites for our 2008 and
beyond tournaments has been VERY frustrating and not too successful.
So why not just go back to where we were before? It is not just that easy. A site where
we historically paid $1,200 per day now wants $10,000 per day. No, that is not a typographical
error. Some of our past sites have raised the site costs to dollar amounts way
beyond our limited budget. None of our 2008 tournaments (except Lake Geneva) will be
in the same site as 2007 because of these increases.
Site size requirements obviously vary by tournament - from 2,500 square feet to 15,000
square feet. Also, free parking is mandatory. Other major considerations are accessibility
from different parts of the Chicagoland area and location to nearby restaurants.
Site cost is a MAJOR issue as it is one of the most significant expenses to the tournament.
Many of the sites do not allow for outside food or beverages. This impacts
offering fruit to the players as hospitality.
To help in finding sites the local Convention & Visitors Bureaus in most of the Chicago
area have been enlisted in our search. They have contacted the sites within their areas
with our tournament needs.
Those sites that have the space available have quoted costs of $5,000 per day, to $6,000
per day, to $28,500 per week, and many others have quoted rates in the same dollar
ranges, and even more.
One convention site even quoted a price that did not include the chairs - they would have
to be rented. When talking with contact persons at some of the prospective sites, they
have actually laughed at me when I told them what we could afford.
At least they wished me well on my quest.
But the quest is not over! We will continue to search for tournament
sites, and we will prevail. If any of you know of or have a contact
with a site that we can afford, please do not hesitate to
inform a Board Member or me.
To think I volunteered for this!
Important to Properly Evaluate Hand
Experts’ Advice: Learn How to Appreciate “Bad” Hands
By Jeff and Ginny Schuett
Developing the ability to properly
evaluate the value of a bridge hand
comes with experience in seeing many
hands and learning what values are
helpful to partner and in what
sequences. Many hands look weak,
but turn out to be great.
Use this example for all East hands
below:
♠ 108652 ♥ QJ92 ♦ Q72 ♣ 8
Bad or Good?
If you and partner have a fit, this hand
is worth about 7 points, 5 HCP plus 2
for distribution. Remember you should
not add distributional points until you
find a fit. Consider some of the
following bidding sequences and how
much this hand is really worth. You
are East:
W N E S
1D P 1S P
2H* P ?
*Reverse
Based on this bidding, your hand has
improved considerably because of the
known fitting cards in diamonds and hearts.
Partner should have at least 5 diamonds
and 4 hearts and about 17+ HCP.
An example for partner: ♠ K2 ♥ AK103
♦ AKJ92 ♣ 82 Note that barring bad
breaks, you are cold for game. When all
your honor cards are working, you can add
up to one point for each fitting honor card
to help evaluate your hand. A reverse is
forcing and on this bidding, raise to 3H.
W N E S
1C P 1S P
2C P ?
This auction is clearly not good for the East
hand and you should pass. Do not try and
improve the contract without the proper
values to do so. Partner is likely to have
6+ clubs and maybe your red suit honors
will help promote side suit winners for
partner.
W N E S
1C P 2C
Dbl P ?
Once again, partner is implying a fit for
both your majors. You have a pretty good
hand and should bid 2S. Partner should
know you have some useful values to
compete, but not enough to invite game by
jumping to 3S. If N/S compete further to
3C, I would bid 3H.
W N E S
2C P 2D* P
2H P ?
*waiting
On this bidding, your hand has grown to
about 8-9 points in support of hearts.
You have 4 card support for partner’s
longest suit and good ruffing values, not
to mention the Q of diamonds.
If you and partner play splinters, I would
jump to 4C to show heart support and
shortness in clubs. I would not be
Need Volunteers
For USBF Tourney
The United States Bridge Federation
(USBF), which holds tournaments to
select U.S. International Teams, needs
volunteers to assist with the June 1 -
10 tournament to be held in
Schaumburg.
This year the USBF will hold the U.S.
Bridge Championship and the U.S.
Women’s Bridge Championship at the
Hyatt Regency Woodfield. To be
selected is the USA2 Team for the
2007 Bermuda Bowl to be held in
China.
The Schaumburg event is staffed by
local bridge player volunteers. Jobs to
be filled are Data Entry, which requires
computer literacy; Match
Recorder, which manually records
information, and Vugraph Operator.
Training will be provided for the latter,
probably on June 9.For more information,
contact Tom Sucher at 630-894-
surprised if we could make a slam on
this hand.
An example for partner: ♠ A ♥
AK1083 ♦ AJ109 ♣ AQ2 and slam is
virtually cold, on a finesse for seven.
In summary, appreciate that hands that
seem “bad” can grow considerably in
value when fits are found and partner
shows a good hand. Then bid your hand
to the fullest! But without a good fit, be
cautious and pass early in the auction.
SWISS TEAMS: Swiss Team events are based on the Swiss
concept that governs play in most chess tournaments. They
are partial Round-robins, set up so that winners play winners
and losers play losers. Two members of your team sit North-
South at one table, and two others sit East-West at a different
table. Another team fills the other seats at the two tables; both
teams play the same boards, your N-S against their E-W and
vice-versa. At the end of each round E-W returns to the home
table to compare scores with their teammates. After each
round the game directors sort the scores and set up the next
round matching teams of approximately equal records.
Usually teams only play each other once in an event. Scoring
is by International Matchpoints (“IMPs”).
KNOCKOUT TEAMS: For many years Swiss Teams were
the most popular form of team event, but recently Knockout
Teams have overtaken Swiss. As in Swiss Teams, in a typical
Knockout, two teams play each other head-to-head; however,
as the name implies, the winner advances to the next round,
and the loser is “knocked out.” [There are variations, but this
explanation fits the majority of Knockout events.] Typically
you play more boards in a Knockout than in a Swiss match (a
round of 24 boards is quite common). For specific information
on Compact Knockouts, see www.bridgeinchicago.com.
SCORING: The arithmetic difference for each hand is
calculated and converted into IMPs using the “International
Matchpoint Scale” which appears on the score card (0-10 = 0,
20-40 = 1, etc.). For instance, if their team bids and makes
1NT, the score is 90; if your team bids 1NT and makes 2NT,
the score is 120, +30, 1 IMP for your team. Adding up the
IMPs for all hands in the round determines the winner. The
team captains verify the results, and the captain of the
winning team submits a score card to the game directors.
Scoring discrepancies must be resolved before a result is
submitted. And, yes, ties are possible.
Specific conditions of contest may vary. Each team has
a responsibility to be aware of the conditions and to
conform accordingly.
Students Learn Bridge Is Fun
Shown are members of the Youth Bridge Club, where
Whitney Young students enthusiastically play bridge
under the superb leadership of Katherine Rehak.
“These students need competition and we need future
Bridge players. If you have a connection with any
elementary school, high school, or University, please try
to implement a Bridge Program,” said Blythe Olshan-
Finley, chairman of the Juniors/Education Committee.
“I have contacted Park Districts where we hope to
begin teaching Bridge to teens and adults, separately. If
you would like to teach or help set up these programs
please let me know,” she said.
Whitney Young students gather to learn to play
