The Grand National Teams
A Refreshingly Different Bridge Experience
By Jeff Miller
Are you serious about improving your game?
If so, plan to play in The Grand National Teams. This
event gives players the experience of playing in a national
event without the time and expense of traveling. Winners
in four different flights from each ACBL District will
compete for the right to represent their District at the
NABC in New York next summer. A substantial subsidy
helps the winning teams continue District 13’s tradition
of GNT excellence.
District 13, which includes Chicago, Wisconsin, and the
Upper Peninsula of Michigan, has an innovative format
that allows participants to “play up” for experience against
strong opposition without losing their chances to win.
Eventually, there is a Flight just right for everyone.
Ask any good player. Nearly all will tell you that they
spent a lot of time playing in strong games, and it was the
key to improving. These chances are increasingly rare,
especially in the local area. There are many opportunities
to play events against players at one’s own level; almost
every event is stratified or bracketed.
Now here is a chance to get some valuable experience
without sacrificing your chance to win. You could start by
playing up in the “Championship” or “A” flights, the focus
of this article. Here are the benefits:
Ê You will see how experts handle the same problems
you have. This will be even easier since the District
is providing hand copies after the match.
Ê You won’t get any unwanted lessons — but if you
ask, you might learn more in a day than you have
learned in months.
Ê You will see how top teams and partnerships behave
and cooperate. It is a great experience.
Ê You will create stories that you can recount for
years. People still talk about matches among the
strong Chicago teams from 25 years ago.
Ê You might score a big upset. They do happen and
you can become an instant celebrity. You earn more
respect from a GNT upset victory than from
multiple wins of bracketed games.
The top flights provide strong competition, a congenial
setting, and the highest principles of ethics and sporting
behavior. It is an experience everyone should enjoy. When
you lose (and all but one team will eventually lose) eligible
players can “drop down” into Flight A competition or enter
the Flight B and C events, which will be held in April. We
will have more on that event in the next issue.
The Championship Flight and Flight A events begin
February 7-8, 2004, at the American Legion in Northbrook
with surviving teams competing again in two weeks. Please
see our ads and flyers for full details.
Players with questions about the event or those who
want to play but need teammates should call or email the
District GNT coordinator: Jeff Miller, jmiller@newarc.com,
630-548-0517 office, 630-357-0341 home.
Want to see your picture
here? Want to play against
these five experts? This is the
time. The team of Ralph
Katz, Jerry Goldfein,
Xiadong Shi, Kerry Smith
and Steve Garner were last
year’s winners. However, the
year before they did not make
the final match. This could
be the year that you knock
them out.
History of the Grand National Teams
Originally the Grand National Teams was a North
American contest with all 25 ACBL districts participating.
Now the Championship division is a United States event,
with only the 23 U.S. districts participating. The event was
subdivided into three separate events in 1985. Qualifiers
earned their right to compete by winning at the grassroots
level earlier in the year. (District 13 does not require club
qualifying events.) The winners at the NABC level have
their names engraved on the Morehead Trophy, donated
by The New York Times in memory of its longtime bridge
editor, Albert H. Morehead. The trophy was originally
awarded to the winners of a special knockout team event
that followed the Reisinger team contest at the Fall NABC
in 1967 but was withdrawn when the event proved
unpopular. Since 1973 the trophy has been awarded to
winners of the Grand National Teams.

Editorial
President’s Message
by Frank Chadwell
As the year 2003 comes to a close, so does my 24 months as president
of the Chicago Contract Bridge Association. I would like to take this
opportunity to thank all my fellow Board members for all the hard work
and assistance they have given me during my tenure. I have enjoyed
working at the administrative end of our organization, and will continue
to do so. As of WinterFest 2004, your new executive committee for the
CCBA will be Lavern Wiebe; president; John Goldstein; vice-president;
Stan Katz; treasurer; and myself as secretary.
The main function of the CCBA is to run tournaments for our
organization. In the past two years we have moved our SummerFest
Regional into Rosemont (the Stephens Convention Center was not a great
site; but your Board listened to your input about this Regional and we are
going to a new and better location in 2004; the Holiday Inn in Rosemont).
We have spent two years at the Weber Leisure Center in Skokie for the
Labor Day Sectional. This is a fine site; attendance is growing there. Last
month was the second year for our new FallFest Sectional at the Lindner
Conference Center in Lombard; also a good site. Attendance at our Central
States Regional at Lake Geneva in October 2003 was up over 75 tables
from 2002; for this we are extremely encouraged.
The Board continues to struggle with the Kibitzer; our most recent
editor, Linda Hargnett, resigned in October 2003. This first issue for 2004
is being done by Patty Chiszar, who as you all know is the Unit 123
Administrator. We will keep the membership informed on further
developments with the Kibitzer.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with comments or requests
(fchadwell@sbhic.com). This is your organization; we as members of the
Board continue to try and make our tournaments better for everyone.
Improving Your
Competitive Bidding Methods
By Rowen Bell
Every newcomer to bridge has
heard the advice, “nothing improves
your game more than playing against
good competition.” As true as this advice
may be, there are a variety of reasons
why it can be daunting for relative
newcomers to make the transition
to playing against players of greater experience.
One of these reasons is unfamiliarity
with the bidding methods
used by your opponents.
In this 3-part article, I briefly discuss
three bidding methods that you
will frequently encounter in Chicagoarea
bridge tournaments: the weak
1NT opening; the strong 1C opening
(Precision); and the two-way 1C opening
(Polish). The focus of the article is
on simple principles that should allow
you to more confidently and effectively
compete against opponents who make
use of these bidding methods.
Weak 1NT
Traditional U.S. methods use an
opening bid of 1NT to show balanced
hands with roughly 15-17 HCP (some
still use 16-18 HCP). However, traditional
U.K. methods use the 1NT opening
to show a balanced hand with only
12-14 HCP – the so-called “weak
notrump”. This treatment has gained
many adherents in the U.S., and today
you may see players use a variety of
weak ranges for the 1NT opening, such
as 13-15 HCP, 11-14 HCP, or even 10-
12 HCP – the “mini notrump”. Make
sure you and your partner agree on
what is a weak notrump hand. I have
played a 13-15 NT with one opponent
assuming strong and the other weak,
with humorous results.
Regardless of the precise range of
your opponents’ weak 1NT opening,
you should keep two principles in mind
when it comes to bidding after their
weak notrump.
First, it is imperative that you have
some ability to penalize the opponents
when you have a big balanced hand.
If you play natural methods over a
strong 1NT opening, or if you have
learned the Cappelletti defense to 1NT,
then you have no problem here: you can
simply double, showing a balanced
hand with at least 15 HCP (although I
would double on some 14-counts, like
JT9x AQx Kx KJTx). Recall that this
double isn’t a takeout bid; it’s an invitation
to your partner to penalize the
opponents, although partner is welcome
to bid at the 2-level if very weak
(when 1NT may make) or at the 3-level
if very strong (when the penalty may
not compensate you for the game that
you can make).
However, if you have adopted the
popular DONT defense to 1NT, where
double shows a single-suited hand, you
can no longer double with the big balanced
hand. As such, if the opponent
to your right opens a weak 1NT and
you hold a balanced 18-count, when
playing DONT you would have to pass,
and you might end up beating 1NT 3
tricks undoubled (+150 or +300) when
you could have made 3NT (+400 or
+600). Thus, if you and your partner
play DONT, I strongly suggest that you
agree to play DONT only against the
strong notrump, and to revert to natural
methods over the weak notrump. Of
course, you need to discuss this with
partner in advance.
Second, your bidding over the weak
notrump should be constructive, not
destructive.
When my right-hand opponent
opens a strong notrump, I would be
happy to bid 2S on QT9xxx x KQx xxx
at neither vulnerable, since I should be
reasonably safe and I want to make it
harder for my opponents – who very
likely have the majority of the strength
– to determine whether or not they have
a heart fit and whether or not to bid
game. However, I believe that it is a
losing tactic to bid 2S on this hand over
a weak notrump opening.
When bidding over an opponent’s
weak notrump, your focus needs to be
on finding game when game is there.
As such, direct bids need to promise
close to opening bid values, so that partner
can feel free to invite game without
worrying about putting the partnership
in danger. For example, over a
weak 1NT to my right, the lower limit
of a 2S bid is more like QT9xxx x KQx
Axx – a marginal opening bid. It’s a
good idea to make sure that you and
your partner are on the same wavelength
here.
Part II, The Strong 1C, will appear
in the next Kibitzer.
What Sort of
Partner Are You?
From February 1996 Grand Slam
Bridge Advisor. Take our survey and
find out! Pick one answer for each
question and add up your score. A
low score makes you a great partner.
1.On the first hand you open very
light. Partner ends in game and goes
down. Do you: a. quibble with
Partner’s poor declarer play? b.
compliment the opponents on their
inspired defense? c. apologize as
soon as you lay down dummy and
promise yourself not to do it again
(at least tonight)?
2.You bid spades twice but the opponents
still end up in no trumps.
Partner doesn’t lead your suit, not
once but three times, and an impossible
contract is made. Do you: a.
fix partner with a glare and lay out
your entire spade suit one card at a
time in a long line across the table?
b. mention to declarer that perhaps
a spade lead might have caused
problems? c. smile and pick up the
next hand?
3.Partner successfully brings home a
close game. Do you: a. explain how
partner could have found the
overtrick that would have given
your side a clear top? b. ask if anyone
at the table was watching “60
Minutes” last night? c. offer congratulations
until partner blushes?
4.Partner lays down a superb dummy.
Far too superb, in fact, for your partscore
contract. Do you: a. shake
your head slowly, give partner a
withering stare and snap “ever
heard of jumping?” b. exclaim
“what an abundance of riches!” c.
say “thank you partner,” just like
you always do?
5.It’s partner’s birthday. Which book
do you give? a. “Basic Card Play for
Idiots” b. “Men are from Mars,
Women are from Venus” c. A homemade
book celebrating ten of
partner’s greatest bridge hands.
6.Late in the game, the opponents
squeak home on the last trick to
make their game. Partner insists
this was due to your risky trump
lead. You’re not so sure. Do you: a.
fight back, pining the blame on
partner’s careless discards? b. get
teary-eyed and mess up the next
hand because you’re too upset to
think straight? c. say “maybe
you’re right, let’s discuss it later.”
(a - 3, b - 2, c - 3)
News From The Clubs
Around Town . . . The new club “Top Board” will
open beginning Saturday, January 3, 2004. “Top Board”
will play at 1:00 each Saturday at the Tamarack Retirement
Center at 55 Greeley St., Palatine, IL 60067. Starting at
12:15, Mark Ganzer will present a 20 minute interactive
bridge lesson designed to improve your bridge results. This
Barometer?
Is It For Me?
by Steve Garner
Ever get off to a fast start
in the finals of an open pairs
and find yourself wondering
if you’re near the top of the
leaderboard? Wonder no
longer. The CCBA offers you
a Barometer Open Pairs, a
two session event with a
qualifying session in the
afternoon (normal scoring)
and a final session that
provides round by round
scores and comparisons.
It’s fun to see how many
pairs bid that slam or how
many declarers failed to take
nine tricks in 3NT. And
since you always know
where atop the leaderboard
you sit, you can plan your
strategy accordingly when
playing against opponents
with a higher score than
yours. So c’mon and play in
the Barometer Open Pairs, a
truly unique event and one
where you don’t ever have to
wait for your scores!
The finals of the Chicago
Invitational Pairs is a
Barometer Event.
Invitations went out to all
players with 1300
masterpoints or more plus
players that won events
during 2003. If you received
an invitition then make a
reservation today and give
this event a try. You might
just find out that it is for you.
will be followed by a Q & A session. Richard Meuller will be
directing the game. If you have any questions, please call
Brian Berkelhamer at 847-815-0101 . . . The Olympia Bridge
Club is planning a special Barometer Event on President’s
Day, February 16. You can call Sue Erickson at 847-398-
3440 for more information . . . Look through the list below
for all of the special events planned by Club Directors
throughout Unit 123. I am sorry the type is so small but it
was the only way to fit in the length of all of the information.
Edward W. Buerger
The bridge family lost a remarkable fellow with the
death of Ed Buerger. Quite the gamesman, when Ed missed
a bridge session, it was probably because he played in a
chess or backgammon tournament.
With over 3,000 masterpoints, the strongest part of Ed’s
game was declarer play. A mathematician of sorts, his
understanding of percentages, restricted choice, squeezes,
etc., made him a formidable foe. Ed liked to repeat the latest
joke from table to table, but was generally quiet in small
talk. In contrast, his language skills prompted him to
engage foreign-born players in banter in their own tongues,
both European and Asian.
Ed was active in the Church of Latter Day Saints. Such
a mind. Quite a loss.
ACBL Board Highlights
by Harriette Buckman
The ACBL Board of Directors met in New Orleans prior
to the Fall NABC. Our meetings were very productive and
I’d like to share some of the highlights that will have an
effect on bridge in Chicago.
The Fall meeting always begins with the approval of
next year’s budget. The next three NABC’s are projected to
be up 5,000 tables over the current year. We expect membership
to be up slightly and tournament income to be up
approximately 5%. The budget for 2004 reflects a 6.4% increase
over last year, with salaries going up approximately
3%; health care costs increasing by approximately 7%; an
increased training budget; an increase in marketing expenses;
and an increase in the cost of the ACBL Bulletin.
We expect these costs to have a positive effect.
At the current time there is no plan for entry fees to rise
at the NABC but if they do we have approved 25% of the per
table increase will be directed back to the local planning
organization. What this means is that after the 2006 Chicago
NABC more money will be given back to our District.
Other highlights from our meeting include:
♣ Any ACBL member who files a civil action or submits a
dispute to arbitration for damages against the ACBL shall
be automatically suspended from the ACBL. If the ACBL
receives a favorable result, then the suspension will only
be lifted after all expenses incurred by the ACBL have
been reimbursed.
♣ I chaired a committee to review the North American Open
Pairs event. My committee recommended the event remain
the same except that at the club level the surcharge
per player to be reduced from the current $1.75 to $1.00.
We also asked ACBL Management to promote this event
more extensively at the club level. In our District we will
have club qualifiers next summer followed by a 2-day combined
Unit and District Finals. We hope that the lower
fees will encourage more players to enter this event.
♣ If you are planning to play in the Spingold next summer
in New York, the game times will be 10:00 and 4:00.
Games times for the Mini-Spingold will be 1:00 and 7:30
until the round of 8, then the games times will be the
same as the Spingold.
♣ The International Fund Game in January will be held
the Saturday before the Super Bowl. To make sure clubs
are successful with this event we moved and passed that
Units can not schedule any bridge event at the same time.
♣ The Board has always been supportive of child care at
the NABC’s. In support this effort we have approved program
funding to ensure this program continues.
♣ A complete review of NABC events will be undertaken
by the Bridge Committee. Input will be sought from
throughout the membership. If you have thoughts on this
issue please let me know so that I can forward your suggestions
to this committee.
♣ A committee has been appointed to examine all special
games held at clubs for consistency of masterpoint awards,
fees paid and how frequently they are run. Again, if you
have any comments for this committee please let me know.
As your representative to the ACBL Board of Directors I
want to know how you feel. I am your voice on the ACBL
Board so I need to know how the memberships feels on the
issues. If you have comments please feel free to
contact me at: harriette@dressing.org.
Not Sure of your
Masterpoints?
The ACBL has a program that allows you to call the ACBL
24-hours a day and find out exactly how many masterpoints
you have . . . and they will tell the color breakdown. So if you
are not sure about how many masterpoints you have call and
you will find out your most current total.
Here's how it works: Call 1/800-467-1623 and you will
reach ACBL's Interactive Voice Response System. A human
voice will guide you through the very simple steps you can
take to find out your service fee or dues status, request
Bulletin delivery, inquire about masterpoints or just leave a
message. You will also be able to find out the six most recent
masterpoint transactions. You will need to have your player
number handy and have a touch-tone telephone.
Going South for the Winter
Would like to continue to receive the Kibitzer while you
are away this winter? When you contact the ACBL with
your address change just tell them that this is a temporary
address change and that you would like to remain in Unit
123. By doing this you will remain a member of the Unit
and you will continue to receive the Kibitzer.
Flight C Players Top Event
Marshall Baum and Bob Howard, Flight C players, really
made a name for themselves at the Central States Regional
in Lake Geneva. Marshall and Bob (who have a combined
total of 200 masterpoints between them) won the twosession
Friday Senior Pairs. It is very unusual for a Flight
C pair to have a section top in A and it is even more rare for
a Flight C pair to win a two session event. This win qualifies
them for a Silver Ribbon Qualification. Congratulations to
this pair and watch for their names at future tournaments.
A Chance To Give Back
This is the time of the year
we ask our members who are
able to give something back to
the organization which has given
them so much pleasure. A small donation
of cash or new goods will
help to fill the baskets
given away at the annual
WinterFest dinner. The
baskets are always a highlight
at the Annual Meeting
Dinner so we like to give away
as many as we can.
Our Baskets
are empty.
Checks should be made payable to the CCBA and mailed
to Jackie Addis, 7326 Gigi Lane, Darien, Il 60561. If you
have other donations, please call Jackie at 630-515-0101.
Around Town
Judy Wadas and Bart Bramley, formerly from Chicago,
were married in Dallas last month. They have been together
26 years and have decided that it was time to get married.
Gunnar Berg and Patti Payne were married the day before
Thanksgiving in New Orleans. They met at SummerFest
last summer when Patti came to the partnership desk looking
for a partner. I’d say she found one.
