TREATMENT BY HYPNOTISM. 187tions that his affliction was not due to any abnormalcondition of the vocal organs but was theresult of an actual condition of his mind, andthat when this impression was removed he couldand would speak without stammering.Somnambulism was then induced and decidedand convincing suggestions were given that hewould not stammer or hesitate when he spoke.That he would know and realize in his own mindthat he had the ability and power to speak hiswords without hesitating, that he now wouldhave confidence in himself, and that when heapproached a person he would talk to him withoutbecoming confused or losing self-control;and that when he attempted to converse over the'phone he would do so without confusion.He was engaged in ordinary conversation afterthese suggestions had been given him and wasable to speak and pronounce certain words whichhe had always hesitated over, such words, for instance,as those beginning with s and f.Then while in this condition he was sent to atelephone and, calling up a lady friend, he talkedtoher by wire, a thing he had never been ableto do before.Decided Post-Hypnotic Suggestions werethen given in regard to the morrow and at allfuture time he would and could speak without
