You can now proceed to induceSuggested Catalepsy <strong>and</strong> Somnambulism orTrance condition, as given in Method One.Hypnosis is induced by this method by fixationof gaze, combined with suggestion. The strainedposition of the eyes, <strong>and</strong> the slight convergentstrabismus which results, pro'duces a tired conditionof the brain, <strong>and</strong> causes sleep, four or fiveminutes generally sufficing todevelop completeHypnosis. (This being a psychological explanationfor those who wish it.) The exact objectheld before the subject's eyes matters little. Itmay be the operator's fingers, or a disc held beforethe subject about a foot from the eyes,placed insuch a position that when looking atit the gaze will be strained upward, it being absolutelynecessary that the subject concentratehis mind <strong>and</strong> whole attention as well as his eyeson the object, <strong>and</strong> tHink only of watching theobject held in the operator's h<strong>and</strong>.
