SYLLABUSPART IIIBusiness Strategy concentrates on the understanding of the concepts and practices of strategic planningand control of business units from the perspective of functional management. It provides an introductionto such aspects of integrating functional planning and control within organizational strategy and structure,as foundations of strategic marketing, external and internal analysis, formal planning systems, operationsstrategy formulation and integrating strategy.Management Project allows students to demonstrate the ability to apply their knowledge and skills toa real management situation, usually within their own organization. Under the guidance of a supervisor,students are required to complete a project leading to recommendation(s) for action or presenting a systemor method which they would wish to see implemented.Course contents of all modules may be changed without prior notice.ENDORSEMENTMODULESPROGRAMMECONTENTMODE OF STUDYParticipants who wish to broaden their theoretical base further may be allowedto take additional Part II module(s) as endorsement module(s).The grade obtained for endorsement module(s) will not be counted towardsthe final GPA but will be shown on transcripts.With the latest social and commercial elements added, the current curriculumreflects the knowledge and skills profile of an effective manager in the 21 stcentury. An attempt has been made to facilitate an appropriate balancebetween theory and practice.DMS is a face-to-face, part-time programme built on a modular system.Participants can customize their study plans through their choices of thenumber of modules, timetables and venues. This flexible modular systemenables participants to pursue a higher qualification with minimum disruptionto their careers and family commitments.15
DMS ALUMNI ASSOCIATIONThe Diploma in Management Studies Alumni Association (DMSAA) wasestablished in 1981 under the auspices of The Hong Kong ManagementAssociation. Its objectives are to encourage DMS participants and graduatesto develop their skills in management, as well as to provide facilities for membersto meet and exchange information and ideas in management. All DMSstudents are eligible to become a member of the DMSAA.To promote fellowship amongst DMS graduates and students, DMSAA organizesa variety of activities such as talks, seminars, site visits, and study tours everyyear. Scholarships will be presented to the distinguished DMS graduates atthe Annual Ball of the Alumni’s Association.16
