Page 2 MUSKOGEE POLICE DEPARTMENT ANNUAL REPORT 2009<strong>Muskogee</strong> HistoryBy 1871, the Missouri-Kansas & Texas Railroadwas crossing Indian Territory and <strong>Muskogee</strong> was establishedin 1872, but Native Americans inhabited thisare long before then. In 1876, the Five Tribes werecombined into one Union Agency.*The Federal Court in Ft. Smith, Arkansas wasgiven authority over Indian Territory because it hadbecome a haven for outlaws. Judge Isaac Parkerworked to bring law and order to the area. DeputyMarshals such as Bass Reeves and Bud Ledbetter werechasing and catching criminals like Belle Starr to beBass Reeves, Bud Ledbetter and the <strong>Muskogee</strong>Police Departmentbrought to the court for trial. In 1889, a federal court was established in <strong>Muskogee</strong> and in 1894the Dawes Commission was headquartered here.*In 1898, <strong>Muskogee</strong> was incorporated and began its public school systemand police department at that time.* This information was obtained from “A Brief History <strong>of</strong> <strong>Muskogee</strong>” by Jonita Mullins on the <strong>Muskogee</strong> Chamber website.<strong>Muskogee</strong> GeographyThe <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Muskogee</strong> is the county seat for <strong>Muskogee</strong> County. It is geographically locatedin northeastern Oklahoma. <strong>Muskogee</strong> is approximately forty-six miles southeast <strong>of</strong> downtownTulsa and seventy-five miles northwest <strong>of</strong> Ft. Smith, Arkansas.The <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Muskogee</strong> covers 46.0 square miles <strong>of</strong> land and 1.4 square miles <strong>of</strong> water. It isthe largest city in <strong>Muskogee</strong> County and is the 11th largest in Oklahoma.Inside the city limits there are 380 centerline miles <strong>of</strong> road. The city is traversed by U.S.Highway 69 on the west, U.S. Highway 64 runs north and south through the city center, U.S.Highway 62 is on the north, Oklahoma State Highway 16 runs east and west through the city center,and Oklahoma State Highway 165 is along the southern portion <strong>of</strong> the <strong>City</strong> then turns intothe <strong>Muskogee</strong> Turnpike to the east.
