LDAfrom the editorDr. David N. AustinEditor, LDA JournalThank YouIt is at this time of the year that I look back andgive thanks. I am thankful that the severity of theH1N1 outbreak was not as bad as it could have been. However, now is not the time to let our guard down, but continue to pay due diligence to preventionpractices, not only in regard to influenza, but to anyand all communicable diseases. (Note the info to the rightfrom Jimmy Guidry, M.D., who is currently the StateHealth Officer of Louisiana, and also serves as the MedicalDirector for the Department of Health & Hospitals.)I am also thankful to our LDA Board of Directors. These men and women give up their office andpersonal time to devote to making the right decisionsthat steer the course of the LDA. They have done agood job, as your LDA remains strong and solvent.I am thankful to a dedicated and talented LDAstaff that frequently puts in many extra hours for ourbenefit. There are truly no words adequate enough tothank them for their devotion.I am thankful for a faithful membership base that isthe envy of the ADA.I am also thankful that I still serve you after adifficult personal start of 2009.As we rush into the year 2010, I have many wishesyet unfulfilled. LDA President Charlie Foy’s article onpages 4-5 is a must read as he has highlighted not onlymany of my wishes, but I bet a few of yours as well. There are still many potential member dentists inour state who have not become members for whateverreason. If you happen to know one perhaps you couldconvey to them the many benefits of becoming an LDAmember. Organized dentistry is the only defense againstthose that would like to control more of our profession. My wish and prayer for you is that 2010 will beyour very best year yet.A note from Jimmy Guidry, M.D., the StateHealth Officer of LouisianaEven though the 2009H1N1 virus has shown signs ofslowing in the past month, itis still important that you takeprecautions to protect yourselfand those around you. As healthcare providers, you and yourstaff likely come in contactwith a high volume of patients, increasing your chances ofexposure to the virus—and your chances of spreadingit. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC) and the Louisiana Department of Health andHospitals (DHH) recommend you take a few simpleactions to fight the flu, and keep you and your staffhealthy and in the office—where you can continue tokeep your patients healthy, too.Get your flu shot: by getting both your seasonal fluvaccine and the H1N1 vaccine, you can stop yourself fromgetting sick and avoid spreading the disease to others.Take everyday precautions: wash your hands often, cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when youcough or sneeze, avoid touching your eyes, nose andmouth, and steer clear of sick people. If you feel sick,STAY HOME. Require any ill staff members to remainout of the office until he/she is fever-free for at least 24hours without the use of fever-reducing medication.Heed public health guidance: as the situationregarding influenza can change rapidly, keep an eye outfor new guidance regarding vaccination, prevention, treatment. It is vital that you stay informed to protectyourself, and so that you can share this informationwith your staff and patients. For more information regarding H1N1 or theseasonal flu, and to access resources for your practice, visit www.FightTheFlu.com.2 LDA Journal

LDAfrom the presidentDr. Charles B. “Charlie” Foy, Jr.President, Louisiana Dental AssociationDear Santa,I know that I have not always been a good boy this year, butI have been trying really hard, especially as we get closer toChristmas. I know that you are thinking that I am going to askfor that bright red Ferrari that is on my list year after year, butthis time I want to ask you for things that are really important. The first thing that I am asking for is wisdom. Not just for me, but for myrepresentatives both at the state and national level. I know that there issome type of health reform needed, but what some members of Congressare trying to do is not the right way to go about it. They need to realizethat true tort reform is the real first step in controlling costs. Any artificialattempts at controlling costs will result in a severe shortage of health careproviders as fees, which are artificially set, will not allow providers to meet overhead costs.Rather than working at a loss, providers will simply quit and do something else. If taxes areincreased as Congress intends to do in order to pay for this, it will drive providers to curtailservices. Why work if after reaching a certain amount of income you are taxed at a rate whichis so high that you are basically working for free? The wisdom is also needed because Congresskeeps trying to lessen the quality of care. Dental health aide therapists (DHATs) were institutedin Alaska a few years ago. Now, as predicted, there are attempts to bring the concept down tothe lower 48 states. These DHATs can do surgical, irreversible procedures without the benefit ofsupervision and with only minimal training. Why should one group of people receive a lowerlevel of care than anyone else? Lower quality care is not better than no care at all. Over 40 yearsago, it was decided that separate but equal was not legal. Now they are trying to institute carethat is not only separate, but also NOT equal. I think that the gift of wisdom is sorely needed.Santa, the next thing on my list is to have drive (no I am not asking for the Ferrari again). I meanthe drive that keeps you wanting to do your best in everything that you do. I recently spent theweekend with a classmate of mine attending a course that was all about excellence. The directorof the course expressed frustration that not everyone attending seemed interested in doing theirbest. It seemed that some attendees were more interested in making the quick buck. What theydon’t realize is that if they do their best for the patients, the money will take care of itself (similarto the build it and they will come principle). We all have different talents, but we should alwaysstrive to do our best for our patients. The upcoming LDA Annual Session in New Orleans is4 LDA Journal

an excellent opportunity to increase our knowledge. The committee has done an outstanding job inlining up a series of excellent speakers. Everyone should put the Annual Session on their list to Santa.Health is on the list because, this year, I have learned what it means not to have it. I’m asking, not onlyfor my minor problems this year, but mostly because of problems which a very good friend is facing. Ipray that you give him the gift of health as well as to the rest of the LDA members and their families.Santa, I know that my letter is getting long, but I feel that what I am asking for is very important, not just for me, but for my colleagues as well.Patience and the ability to communicate would be really nice in my Christmas stocking. I wouldlove patience to deal with and truly listen to those who have different opinions. I would alsotreasure the ability to communicate so that they also understand my point of view. Finally Santa, I would love the gift of appreciation. I would like to have the ability to appreciatemy staff for all the support that they give throughout the year; gratitude for support personnel likeour vendors and laboratory support people who allow us to provide quality care; appreciation toour patients who give us their trust and allow us to make a living; and the wonderful staff at theLDA who work tirelessly to give all they can to make our lives easier. I would also like additionalgratitude for my many friends with which I have been blessed. And Santa, most of all, I want toappreciate my wife and children who make my life wonderful and worthwhile.Santa, thanks for listening. I promise tobe a better boy next year and hope thatyou put me on the good boy list for thisyear. It is my sincere hope that thesegifts be shared with all the members ofthe LDA and that the coming year is abetter year for all.Disclaimer: I have not gone off my rockerand started hallucinating about Santa.I know that Santa does not exist. I do,however, believe strongly in the spirit ofChristmas and this holiday season. As theeconomy slows, I feel that it is good to lookand think about something positive. I can’tthink of anything more positive than recallingour youth and the anticipation of Christmasmorning and what we would find underthe tree. I mean no disrespect to any non-Christian religions; I am just going on mypersonal experiences. I believe strongly inGod and the power of prayer and feel thatwe should be grateful for the gifts which wereceive. I wish every one of you the best forthe coming year.Everything You Need to Know AboutFinancial Planning All In One BookOnly $14.95!Free for LDAMembers!Log onto ourwebsite and clickon “LDA Members”on the left. AsLDA President Dr. Charlie Foy said,“Frances always made it a pleasure tocall the LDA office. You could feel hersmile at the other end of the line.”Being the friendly voice to greetcallers and visitors was just thebeginning of a long list of servicesFrances provided as administrativeassistant for the LDA. As she puts it, she has been hereapproximately 18.656716417910447761194029850746% of her life. As such, it is no wonder that she wasdirectly or indirectly involved in nearly every aspect of theLDA over her career. Each of the many tasks Frances worked on was tackledwith enthusiasm. She prepared materials for board andconference meetings, supervised the coordination andrecords of the peer review program, coordinated Med-Com’s radiographic training program and much, muchmore. For any member or patient who has called theoffice in a panic, the title counselor is also fitting. She claims the reason she stayed with the LDA forso many years is that it was truly a great place to work. She explained, “There have been so many outstandingdentists who have always treated me with great respectand appreciation.”Frances made the decision to retire based uponthe needs of her family, particularly her son, Scott. She plans on keeping herself busy spoiling her“The Voice of the LDA” Frances Cagle RetiresAfter Almost 13 Years with the LDALDA President Dr. Charlie Foy (right)presented Frances Cagle with a plaque/clock commemorating almost 13 yearsas a member of the LDA staff.grandchildren, working on pottery andstained glass with her husband, Arthur, andvolunteering at church. The mutual admiration between Francesand those she has worked with is self-evident.Dr. Rich Corley, Senior Vice-President andCEO of Louisiana Dental Services, stated, “Inall the years that I have been actively involvedin a leadership capacity with the LDA, I havenot known a staff member that has been morecommitted to making the LDA successful infulfilling its mission to serve all the membersin the best way possible, no matter how hardthe effort needed to accomplish that mission. She will be missed by all of us who have hadthe opportunity to work with her. We wishher the richest of all God’s blessing in the taskbefore her.”LDA President-Elect Dr. Eddie Hebert echoed Dr.Corley’s sentiment. He said, “I still remember thefirst day I began on the Board of Director’s, Francesintroduced herself and let me know if I ever neededanything to let her know. I will surely miss therecognition of her voice when I call the LDA office.Frances made my time of involvement with the LDAactivities something to truly remember.”Frances felt equally as passionate about the LDAmembers as they did of her. Of all the things at the LDAshe will miss, she claimed she will miss the staff andmembers most of all. She said, “I’ll certainly miss the girlsat the office. We’ve worked well together and we had justbegun to enjoy some evenings playing tennis together. ButI don’t intend to be dead on October 16 (retirement day)so I’ll keep in touch with them and everyone who has alsoenriched my life during my LDA years.”The LDA family sincerely wishes Frances a happyand fulfilling retirement, and thanks her for her yearsof dedication and service.6 LDA Journal

Dr. Gwen Corbett, a Fortress Dentist.I live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It is a great city full of cajunculture and a love of LSU.I grew up in the local dental community. My father was ageneral dentist here for 35 years and my mother ran the office. After dental school, I joined the practice for 4 years beforespecializing. My father was a very empathetic dentist and anexcellent mentor.I practice endodontics with Drs. Simon and Bond at Root CanalSpecialists of Baton Rouge. It’s a top notch practice. Ourpatients are our priority.I specialized in endodontics because I really liked the focus. Our patients are often in pain and afraid. It is very rewardingto relieve them of both.I earned my pilot’s license in 2006, and am now working ongetting my instrument license. It is so exciting to just get ina plane and go flying, such a feeling of freedom.I enjoy triathlons and racing. Balancing it all with a babyis a challenge. I really appreciate thatdentistry gives me flexibility.Ilovemy family and friends. I havea tremendous friend network. They make my world go ‘round.I admire my mother so much. She’s a cancer survivor witha lot of energy and fortitude.I recommend Fortressprofessional liability coverage.I like the personal service andthe newsletters with the casestudies. LDAWard Blackwell, M.J.LDA Executive Directorfrom the executive directorThere is an awful lot that you CAN get out of yourmembership in the ADA, LDA and your localdental association. What you DO get out of it oftendepends on you.It is true that you can receive many memberbenefits with generally minimal effort. Theessential information contained in dental associationpublications and ADA/LDA Web sites can be accessedwith a click of a mouse or a trip to the mailbox. Otherbenefits like peer review (mediation) and disasterassistance are there when you need them, but aren’tused regularly. One of the most valued benefits, according to ADAmember surveys, is governmental advocacy. While thisrepresentation certainly does benefit members withouttheir actively participating, the value definitely increaseswhen they do. Simply put, the paid lobbyists, staff andvolunteer leaders of the ADA and LDA are FAR moreeffective in our advocacy when we have grassrootssupport. This includes your contributing to our dentalpolitical action committees (ADPAC, LADPAC and DAP-PAC), contacting government officials to support/opposebills (our VoterVOICE system makes this incrediblysimple) and attending grassroots advocacy events likeDentists’ Day at the Legislature. However, taking full advantage of some memberbenefits requires actively making an effort to do so. Theextra effort is well worth it. There’s no better example ofthis than the New Orleans Dental Conference (NODC)and LDA Annual Session. The merged NODC/LDA Session debuted in 2007.Since then, the conference committee has changedcomposition a bit and includes members from severalareas of the state. In fact, the 2010 chairman, Dr. BillHadlock, practices in Baton Rouge. With new faces have come some new ideas. Mostvisible of these are probably the new venues andmenus for the welcome reception/LDA president’s partyand exhibit hall incentives (more opportunities to winprizes). Yet, the committee has also strived to maintainYOUR meeting, YOUR Associationthe traditional strengths of the conference as well. Theresult is a regional dental meeting that has set the barquite high in terms of an overall quality experience.Yet, while attendance figures are on the rise, therate of growth suggests that many of you have not yetrecognized the value of YOUR state dental meeting. This is not just about getting continuing education(C.E.) hours. If your only concern is getting theminimum number of hours required every two yearsin order to maintain your license, there are plenty ofinexpensive, convenient options available to everydentist in the state through study clubs, local societies, online, etc. The conference committee and boards ofLDA and NODA are well aware of this. However, the C.E. at the NODC/LDA Sessionoffers a broad array of excellent speakers and timely, interesting topics, including many tailored to greatlyenhance the knowledge of your staff. And while itmay not be the absolute cheapest C.E., the $300registration fee for all LDA members is still a VERYgood deal. (And, the $55-85 rates for assistants andhygienists is a real steal!)What makes the conference a truly unique value isall the other things it brings together along with theC.E. For instance, well over 100 exhibitors providethe best opportunity in the entire state to check outthe most cutting edge products and services for yourpractice. And, almost all of them are available at steepdiscounts for those attending the conference.Several other dental organizations, including thePierre Fauchard Academy and LSU School of DentistryAlumni Association, plan events that take placeduring this conference, including several LSUSD classreunions. For Louisiana dentists, this is by far the bestnetworking opportunity in any year. And, the NODC/LDA Session is when many of theLDA’s most important policy decisions get made. Isthere an issue important to you that you believe theLDA should be addressing? Do you have concernsover some present LDA policy positions? There is no14 LDA Journal

LDAcouncil on insuranceDr. Keith R. KylerChairman, LDA Council on InsuranceUpdate on LDA-Endorsed Health InsuranceProgramThe November 1, 2009, transition of the LDAendorsedhealth insurance program from NipponLife to Companion Life Insurance Company is nearingcompletion. Because the move to Companion Lifewas not a carrier takeover as we have experienced inthe past, additional underwriting was required by thenew carrier. This review was justified to ensure thatpremiums for all insureds correctly reflected the cost oftheir actual and projected utilization.Realistically, in any major carrier change, therewill be some participant attrition. I am pleased toreport, however, that our insurance representatives atRobert Ellis & Associates (REA) assisted the majorityof our members previously covered under Nippon intheir successful transition to Companion. In additionand acting on behalf of the LDA, REA also assistedany member requiring alternative benefits outsidethe sponsored program to secure insurance in thecommercial marketplace. To the best of my knowledge, every LDA member affected by Nippon’s withdrawalfrom the state has secured coverage. The transition to Companion Life on November1 also brings about several important changes in theprogram, including: and financial stability of Companion Life.Companion is a subsidiary of Blue Cross/BlueShield of South Carolina and provides the LDAprogram with an A+ rated carrier of outstandingstability and marketplace prestige. Deductible Health Plans qualified for use with aHealth Saving Account (HSA) has been greatlyexpanded. Individual and family deductiblesranging from $1,500 to $11,600 coupled with achoice of co-insurance options provide a wide rangeof monthly premium choices to accommodate theneeds of you and your family. individual and group applicants. This can meansubstantial savings in premium for those notdesiring this coverage. For individuals who wantmaternity coverage, benefits are subject to a12-month waiting period from the effective dateof coverage with a $5,000 maximum benefit perpregnancy thereafter. In groups of two or more, maternity is payable as any other eligible expense. In closing, I would like to reassure all current andprospective participants that the endorsed healthinsurance program remains strong and continues tobe an important benefit of Association membership. The LDA-endorsed program under Companion Life ishealthy and competively priced, and we are optimisticfor its future growth. In today’s economy, I urge everymember not on Medicare to consider one of the LDAendorsedhigh deductible health plans featuring lowermonthly premiums and tax deductible contributions toa health savings account (HSA).Our endorsed portfolio contains the only health, life, long term disability and property and casualtyprograms designed exclusively by and for you as LDAmembers. The new Long Term Disability programshould be of special interest to each of you. It notonly provides the “own occ” definition of disabilitytypically found in expensive individual plans, it doesso at extremely competitive group prices negotiated onbehalf of the LDA and its members. If you are not currently covered under the LDAprogram or if you have any questions regarding yourcurrent benefits, I encourage you to contact Stormy Blair,Matt Hightower or Donna Hebert, your LDA-endorsedinsurance program representatives at Robert Ellis &Associates, at 985-674-3880 or 1-888-503-5547.18 LDA Journal

LDAlsu school of dentistryDr. Henry A. Gremillion, DeanLSU School of DentistryReuniting, Reconnectingspontaneous moment happenedA during Alumni Day last October.Because it struck a chord with theaudience, I wanted to share it.Our current SGA president, ChrisFeldman—while telling the audienceof 350 alumni about upcomingstudent activities—candidly said, “Myfirst year in dental school was thehardest year of my life.” For just aminute, the whole room stood still. Ithink a lot of us agreed. When I reflect on my four yearsin dental school…the experiencesthat transformed me and the closefriendships I formed… I can partiallyattribute it to the fact that it was achallenging time. And since graduating32 years ago, I’ve watched those bondsgrow year after year. When I travel to Houma, Monroe, all around the state to talk to area district associations, Ifeel at home with friends.Relationships are such an integral part of our lives. It takes deliberate effort to keep those relationshipsgoing, especially because many of us are in solopractices–65% according to a survey by the ADA. Dayin and day out, we usually don’t interact with otherdentists, much less our former classmates. That’sone of the reasons the LDA Annual Session and NewOrleans Dental Conference is such a tremendousresource. It’s a unique opportunity to catch up,reminisce and learn more from each other, not justabout dentistry but about what life has taught us.A special part of the conference are the classreunions coordinated through the LSUHSC School ofDentistry Alumni Association. This year, class reunionsare offered for the classes of 1975, 1980, 1985, 1990,1995, 2000 and 2005. In addition, the school’s annualalumni reception will be at Harrah’s Hotel, VieuxCarré Ballroom in New Orleans from 5 to 7 p.m.Dr. Charles Foy, seated, is surrounded by formerclassmates from the Class of 1984, from left, Drs.L. Stephen Ortego, Ike House and Eddie Hebert. The reception is for all graduates. It’sanother great opportunity to reconnectwith over 300 dental professionalsfrom Louisiana and across the country.Last year, the class of 1984, a groupthat has produced so many leaders, had their 25th reunion. Dr. Ike House, who coordinated the reunion, recentlyshared his thoughts about reconnectingwith his classmates.“When I think about our class,I think of old friends who mean somuch because they know where youhave been,” Ike said. “That’s why mydental school classmates, the ones whowent through the ‘dental wars,’ are soimportant to me. You never know whichfriends will bring valuable insights whenyou visit with them. Our four yearsat the dental school gave us the opportunity for aboveaverage income and the respect that comes with being ahealth care professional. You cheat your classmates butmostly yourself when you don’t come to reunions.”Dr. Eddie Hebert, also from the Class of 1984,commented that, “we get so involved with the busynessof running a practice, raising family and othercommitments that it’s easy to lose touch with the goodtimes we had in dental school. That’s why reunions aregreat. For just a few precious hours, we can pull backand reflect on those past years. Nothing replaces thestories that keep coming up about a certain teacher,a patient case, TGIF or the daily ritual of grinding itout day after day. This past reunion, we told some ofthe same stories from 10 years ago and it was like wewere there all over again. Just seeing someone’s faceor recognizing their voice in the crowd keeps bringingback those great memories.”Thank you, Ike and Eddie. I could not have said itbetter. LDADr. Lynn PhilippePresident, Louisiana State Board of Dentistrylouisiana state board of dentistry“Life is like a box of chocolates…”Well! It’s hard to believe that another year hascome and gone. The end of the year will notonly be the end of my term as president of theLouisiana State Board of Dentistry (LSBD), butalso will conclude my term as a memberfrom the Eighth District which comprisesGreater Baton Rouge. I wish to thankall who helped make this appointmentpossible, for I have truly enjoyed beinga part of the LSBD and hope that I haveserved you well. I want to be the first toadmit that the job carried many more dutiesand responsibilities than I imagined, but withthe assistance and tutelage of the other members, staff, educators and input and advice from the variousdental organizations, I survived. The year encompassed many issues, but oneparticularly overshadowed all others. This year was thesecond full year for participation and administrationof our CITA regional licensing examination. As withany new endeavor, there is always a learning curve;however, this year brought significant improvementin the delivery and administration of the exam.Continued improvement and efficiency in the gradingand dissemination of results is forthcoming. Becauseof the diligence and concern of the test personnel andthe direct participation of a few of the LSBD members,I know that the CITA licensing exam will become the“benchmark” by which all other regional exams areconstructed and evaluated.Secondly, our office personnel are workingextremely hard toward completion and implementationof the changeover to electronic licensing, permittingand dissemination of any important issues.Unfortunately, we were delayed by financialcontractual restraints beyond our control. Our targetdate of completion is mid-year 2010.Next, we are entering our fifth year of permittingenteral conscious sedation privileges. I must saythat having been closely involved with regulationand oversight by the Anesthesia Committee,I feel that this has enhanced the safe andcomfortable delivery of dental care to thepublic by all who have participated in therequired education. To those who have notpursued the privilege, I would encourageyou to talk with your colleagues and heartestimony as to the benefits it has brought totheir practices. We have been involved withthe dental hygienists’ request to have the privilegeof the administration of nitrous oxide under directsupervision. We feel that this also will be beneficialto the delivery of safe, comfortable dental care andenhance your practices.Remember, the more fear we can allay regardingour profession, the better for all involved. Lastly, asI discussed in my previous article, “Mobile/PortableDentistry,” legislation and rulemaking permeated theentire year and occupied much of our time. We hopethis issue is settled but “…you never know what you’regoing to get.”In closing, I want to sincerely thank all that areinvolved in the education, licensing, permitting, administration and delivery of safe and comfortabledental care so the residents of Louisiana feel that inour profession “they know what they are going to get.”May all have a safe and happy holiday season and aprosperous New Year. Peace to all and God bless.28 LDA Journal

LDAwealth managementChad Olivier, CFP ®Wealth Consultant/LPL Branch Manager, The Olivier Group, L.L.C.Emotions can race when the stock market tumbles,as well as rises. More often than not, poor decisionsare made when investing on emotions. To stave off theseshort term feelings of excitement or panic, a strategyshould be implemented and discipline prioritized. This past year, the economy has tested some of theestablished methods that many investors uphold. Nowlet’s take a look at what we learned about these basicrules of investing and how each should be modified.Buy and Hold. This is a strategy that looks goodon paper, but truly needs to be modified to: Buy,Hold, Monitor and Adjust. There have been and alwayswill be great buy and hold investments. Nevertheless, continuously monitoring these investments is vital.Numerous examples exist of companies that have hadexcellent growth rates sometimes attained becauseof the company’s cutting edge technology, lack ofcompetition and/or successful management. A changein the factors contributing to a company’s growthat any point in time could greatly affect the results.Buying and holding investments with a long-termstrategy can be beneficial, but it is also critical tomonitor the investments and not be afraid to make theadjustments when necessary.Diversify with Stocks and Bonds. This rule makessense, but needs to be expanded beyond the basic twoasset classes of stocks and bonds. The new modifiedasset allocation models should include stocks, bondsand alternative investments, such as real estate. Addingmore diversification in a portfolio could lower volatilityand increase return over time.*An investment that claims to be largelydiversified should not drop as much in a bearmarket. Most investors found out the hard way thatthis rule is not true. The big question that reallyshould be asked is: What is a diversified portfolio? Many investments may be considered diversified intheory, but are far from it. The new rule: Make sureyour portfolio is truly diversified and use the past bearThe New Rules of Investingmarkets as a gauge.** It is important to look at thedetails of all of your investments and make sure youhave the correct percentages of each type of assetclass in your portfolio. Then do the research to seehow that particular investment performed in goodand bad markets.Keep a high percentage of equities in retirementbecause we are living longer. This perception hasbeen pushed on us by Wall Street for decades. Instead, the rule should be to have the least amount of equitiespossible in retirement. Yes, equities over time havegotten higher returns than any other investmentcategory. However, if a high percentage of a retiree’sassets were in equities during any of the downturnsor bear markets their portfolio would have beendiminished at a more rapid rate because of the neededdistributions for retirement income. This can lead to asignificantly lower retirement distribution and possiblyforcing the retiree back into the workforce. These modified, new rules of investing may be adheredand followed to help attain and maintain wealth.* Investing in securities is subject to risk, including loss of principal.**Past performance is no guarantee of future results.Chad Olivier is author of “What Medical School Did Not Teach You about Financial Planning”and owner of the firm The Olivier Group, LLC in Baton Rouge, La., which specializes in retirementplanning and wealth management for physicians, dentists and other affluent individuals andfamilies. LDAlast pageDavid AustinErect Tile DysfunctionOur small kitchen pantry was in needof new flooring. It had an annoyingsqueak whenever you steppedon it and the old tile wasbeginning to look bad. Reallynow, how hard can it be toreplace a few tiles? Ah, but mymomma once told me thatlife isn’t like a box ofchocolates. It’s more like ajar of jalapenos. What youdo today, might not feel sogood tomorrow. Thinking ofthis, I decided to seek help.On the sixth floor of theLDA library you will find theself-help section containing booksand articles pertaining to endodontics, composites, orthognathic surgery and replacing thefloor in your home or office. So, after an exhaustivestudy of all the books and journals I could findon flooring, I felt confident that this could beaccomplished not only easily, but rather cost effectiveas well. I should have realized that sometimes wheneverything is coming your way, you could be in thewrong lane.During removal of the old floor, imagine mydismay upon finding that much of the sub-flooringmaterial needed replacing. Not only was it in badshape, but the deterioration also extended into thekitchen and dining area.Ripping all of the old floor and sub-floor away, many of the cabinets and parts of the wall neededremoving as well. I also found some wiring andplumbing that apparently a herd of squirrels hadattacked and damaged which extended up into theattic area requiring ceiling and roof repair. It was inthe attic where I found evidence that we had a familyof illegal aliens living up there some time back. I waswondering why we had two mailboxes out front allthose years! The concrete under the sub-floorhad also deteriorated in somespots requiring extensive postand core build-up.The small half day project turned intoa nine month ordeal. I was beginningto feel a little depressed and alone. However, if you think nobodycares, try missing a couple ofmortgage payments.Fortunately, I was able to do itall myself and saved a ton of money. So far, the only problems thathave surfaced are with the electroplumbingareas. Seems that wheneveryou use the microwave oven, the upstairs commodewill flush! It’s o.k. though, we just make sure no oneis up there whenever we want to heat up a sandwich. Also some of the appliances don’t always turn on whenyou need them, but we tend to eat out a lot anyway, sono big deal. The pantry floor still has an annoying squeakwhenever you stand on it, but you know, we canpractically reach anything we need without walkingin there. The roof has a small leak whenever it rains. A smallblue tarp up there has temporarily cured the problemand sort of adds a little festive “color” this time of year. With the money I saved by doing everything myself,I will be able to afford a contractor to correct all ofthese little problems. I learned my lesson though. Irealized that hard work may or may not pay off in thefuture, but laziness pays off now. I also realized thatdepression is merely anger without enthusiasm.Next time, I’ll sell the place.36 LDA Journal
