<strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> of Western Australia Schoolof Medic<strong>in</strong>e and PharmacologyOne of the largest and most complex Schools<strong>in</strong> the <strong>University</strong>, Medic<strong>in</strong>e and Pharmacologyis located at four primary sites and supportsmedical, dental and science teach<strong>in</strong>g discipl<strong>in</strong>es.A close cl<strong>in</strong>ical liaison with several teach<strong>in</strong>g andprivate hospitals is ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed, with teach<strong>in</strong>gcontributions delivered by over 250 cl<strong>in</strong>icalaccorded status consult<strong>in</strong>g physicians. Researchactivities range from NHMRC, ARC and othercompetitive grants to large-scale cl<strong>in</strong>ical trials,government sponsored Centres of Excellence,and a Cooperative Research Centre (CRC).Sir Charles Gairdner HospitalSir Charles Gairdner Hospital Unit,School of Medic<strong>in</strong>e and Pharmacology<strong>The</strong> Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital Unitsupports 12 academics (<strong>in</strong> specialty areas ofrespiratory medic<strong>in</strong>e, cardiology, endocr<strong>in</strong>ology,gastroenterology/hepatology, renal medic<strong>in</strong>e,medical oncology and palliative care); researchonlystaff; 5 general and technical staff, 22senior cl<strong>in</strong>ical accorded status staff, and around70 cl<strong>in</strong>ical teach<strong>in</strong>g staff, with 12 postgraduatestudents currently enrolled. Major cl<strong>in</strong>ical andlaboratory research <strong>in</strong>terests <strong>in</strong> the Unit <strong>in</strong>cludetumour immunology, asthma and <strong>in</strong>fl ammation,cardiovascular disease, bone disorders, renal,oncology, palliative care and hepatology/livertransplantation. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Chair</strong> is supported by aHospital-funded Teach<strong>in</strong>g Registrar.Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital is a progressive,fully accredited 624-bed teach<strong>in</strong>g hospital, whichservices the Northern Metropolitan Health Region<strong>in</strong> Perth. All services for adult medic<strong>in</strong>e andsurgery are provided. <strong>The</strong> Western AustralianState Government has endorsed the HealthReform Committee recommendations (2004)which see Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital hav<strong>in</strong>g acoord<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g/state-wide role for cancer services,neurosciences and liver/kidney transplantation.Current medical service units encompassedare Emergency, Acute Medic<strong>in</strong>e and Skeletal;Cancer; Gastroenterology and Renal; Heart andLung; and Neurosciences.<strong>The</strong> position will <strong>in</strong>volve teach<strong>in</strong>g and supervisionof undergraduate and postgraduate students,cl<strong>in</strong>ical service and cl<strong>in</strong>ical and/or teach<strong>in</strong>gbased research. <strong>The</strong> appo<strong>in</strong>tee will have cl<strong>in</strong>icalresponsibilities with<strong>in</strong> the relevant cl<strong>in</strong>icaldepartment at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.9

Each yearWestern Australia’s high quality public and private<strong>edu</strong>cation systems attract more than 12,000 feepay<strong>in</strong>g overseas students.Western Australia’s economy is basedsignificantly on primary products, from agricultureand horticulture, m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, and, to a lesser extent,forestry and fish<strong>in</strong>g. Gold and alum<strong>in</strong>ium are thema<strong>in</strong>stay of the m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry, supplementedby nickel, diamond and m<strong>in</strong>eral sands. Iron oreis the state’s major export commodity. Majorresources of oil and natural gas are extractedfrom the northwest shelf (off the Port Hedland-Karratha coast) and the Timor Sea. <strong>The</strong> NorthWest Shelf Project is Australia’s biggest resourcedevelopment. Production of oil from thenorthwest shelf was expected to surpass thatfrom Bass Strait by the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of the 21stCentury. Natural gas is exported <strong>in</strong> liquefied fromand is also piped to the southwest for domesticand <strong>in</strong>dustrial use, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g power generation.the shores of Cockburn Sound. <strong>The</strong> area hasseveral major <strong>in</strong>dustries, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g oil, alum<strong>in</strong>a,and nickel ref<strong>in</strong>eries. <strong>The</strong> state’s service <strong>in</strong>dustryexports local expertise <strong>in</strong> areas such as resourcedevelopment, environmental management,survey<strong>in</strong>g, eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and construction, and<strong>in</strong>formation technology applications are alreadywell established <strong>in</strong> overseas markets.Perth, the capital of Western Australia hasa population of over 1.4 million. It is acosmopolitan city, with a wide ethnic and culturaldiversity. It is situated on the banks of the SwanRiver and the Central Bus<strong>in</strong>ess District is lessthan 12 kilometres from the Indian Ocean. Perthenjoys a Mediterranean climate, with more hoursof sunsh<strong>in</strong>e than any other capital city <strong>in</strong> Australia.Summers are hot and dry and the w<strong>in</strong>ters mildand wet.
