IntroductionApplic<strong>at</strong>ions are invited from appropri<strong>at</strong>ely qualified academics for the position <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pr<strong>of</strong>essor</strong>/Associ<strong>at</strong>e <strong>Pr<strong>of</strong>essor</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Psychi<strong>at</strong>ry</strong> based <strong>at</strong> <strong>Joondalup</strong> Health Campus. Whilst a <strong>Pr<strong>of</strong>essor</strong>ialappointment is the preferred outcome, applicants may be considered for appointment asAssoci<strong>at</strong>e <strong>Pr<strong>of</strong>essor</strong> depending upon clinical and academic experience. The <strong>Pr<strong>of</strong>essor</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>Psychi<strong>at</strong>ry</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>Joondalup</strong> Health Campus is to be the first full-time academic post in psychi<strong>at</strong>ry<strong>at</strong> th<strong>at</strong> site. This position has been cre<strong>at</strong>ed due to the planned rapid expansion <strong>of</strong> the medicalstudent teaching programme <strong>at</strong> The University <strong>of</strong> Western Australia and major developmentsplanned for the <strong>Joondalup</strong> Health Campus as part <strong>of</strong> the Western Australian hospital reformprogram. The appointee will be expected to develop and lead a fully functional academic unitand provide clinical leadership <strong>at</strong> the campus during its rapid expansionary phase.BackgroundThe expansion <strong>of</strong> the undergradu<strong>at</strong>e MBBS teaching program requires the establishment <strong>of</strong> newclinical teaching sites within the metropolitan area and future plans <strong>of</strong> the North MetropolitanHealth Service include a major expansion <strong>of</strong> clinical and academic activities <strong>at</strong> <strong>Joondalup</strong> HealthCampus. The proposal is to establish an academic teaching and research unit in psychi<strong>at</strong>ry <strong>at</strong> th<strong>at</strong>site led by a <strong>Pr<strong>of</strong>essor</strong>/Associ<strong>at</strong>e <strong>Pr<strong>of</strong>essor</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Psychi<strong>at</strong>ry</strong>, jointly funded by the Health Serviceand UWA. This position <strong>of</strong>fers excellent opportunities to develop new teaching programmesand to enhance the academic presence <strong>at</strong> the <strong>Joondalup</strong> Health Campus.A <strong>Pr<strong>of</strong>essor</strong>ial unit can be set up reasonably quickly <strong>at</strong> this site given the current level <strong>of</strong>supported clinical activity (i.e., numbers <strong>of</strong> p<strong>at</strong>ients, consultants, registrars and residents) andthe encouraging <strong>at</strong>titudes <strong>of</strong> North Metro and hospital management. The applicant should beable to provide service to a general psychi<strong>at</strong>ric unit and academic leadership in psychi<strong>at</strong>rywhilst a sub-specialty role could be pursued simultaneously.In parallel with this proposal, academic posts in medicine and general practice have been filled.Initially the post will be aligned with the Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre site <strong>of</strong> the Schoolwhich is in the same area health service but future expansion <strong>of</strong> academic activities <strong>at</strong> thesite may lead to the establishment <strong>of</strong> a clinical school <strong>at</strong> <strong>Joondalup</strong>. The academics will shareaccommod<strong>at</strong>ion and <strong>admin</strong>istr<strong>at</strong>ive support <strong>at</strong> <strong>Joondalup</strong>.TeachingThe <strong>Pr<strong>of</strong>essor</strong> will develop, support and coordin<strong>at</strong>e teaching <strong>of</strong> psychi<strong>at</strong>ry <strong>at</strong> <strong>Joondalup</strong> HealthCampus. This will include co-ordin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> the psychi<strong>at</strong>ry teaching programmes for medicalstudents in Years 4 and 6. The current teaching curriculum for these students comprises lecturesand tutorials in general adult psychi<strong>at</strong>ry.ResearchThere will be a need for a substantial commitment to research in the area <strong>of</strong> interest and expertise<strong>of</strong> the successful applicant. The expect<strong>at</strong>ion will be for the <strong>Pr<strong>of</strong>essor</strong> to gre<strong>at</strong>ly stimul<strong>at</strong>eresearch activities <strong>at</strong> <strong>Joondalup</strong> Health Campus. The type <strong>of</strong> research activities will also dependon opportunities for collabor<strong>at</strong>ion with other research units <strong>of</strong> the School, Faculty and widerUniversity.


ServiceThe <strong>Pr<strong>of</strong>essor</strong> will have clinical duties <strong>at</strong> the Psychi<strong>at</strong>ric Unit <strong>of</strong> <strong>Joondalup</strong> Health Campus.This would include providing care for p<strong>at</strong>ients involved in inp<strong>at</strong>ient, outp<strong>at</strong>ient and communitypsychi<strong>at</strong>ry tre<strong>at</strong>ment facilities. If required, the pr<strong>of</strong>essor will also particip<strong>at</strong>e in the on-callafter hours roster. Clinical duties would include providing a leadership role in pr<strong>of</strong>essionaldevelopment for medical staff. The clinical commitment would be expected to comprise up to30% <strong>of</strong> time. Clinical Responsibilities• Provide routine and emergency consult<strong>at</strong>ion and management <strong>of</strong> p<strong>at</strong>ients within<strong>Joondalup</strong> Health Campus. Service provision will be in accordance with the needs <strong>of</strong>the Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>Psychi<strong>at</strong>ry</strong> during normal working hours and as rostered for afterhours and weekends. Conditions <strong>of</strong> EmploymentThe appointment will be for a fixed term <strong>of</strong> five years with the possibility for further periods asmutually agreed, and will be subject to annual performance reviews.An <strong>at</strong>tractive and flexibly constructed remuner<strong>at</strong>ion package will be negoti<strong>at</strong>ed.
