They have 6 acres land with black soil <strong>on</strong> which they cultivatedBengal gram. A stream started flow<strong>in</strong>g across the middle of their land. In the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g,they were happy to get additi<strong>on</strong>al water which helped crop growth. But as the yearspassed by, the stream became very large and the field was separated <strong>in</strong>to two parts.It started erod<strong>in</strong>g the cultivated land. The two brothers were worried and approached RDT<strong>in</strong> the year 1993. RDT staff went to the village and verified the situati<strong>on</strong>. They decided toc<strong>on</strong>struct a check-dam. The c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> was completed with<strong>in</strong> 3 m<strong>on</strong>ths and with<strong>in</strong> <strong>on</strong>eyear the land became leveled. She got tra<strong>in</strong>ed by BAIF, promotedchulhas and is be<strong>in</strong>g recognised as tra<strong>in</strong>er for mak<strong>in</strong>g improved chulha. She made morethan 5000 chulhas <strong>in</strong> Karnataka villages. My border may restrict with<strong>in</strong> my family if AME had not entered <strong>in</strong>to my lifeI went to <strong>on</strong>e exposure visit to Tanjore, which was organised by NABARD farmers club.There, I had <strong>in</strong>teracti<strong>on</strong>s with scientists, farmers from various regi<strong>on</strong>s and shared myexperience. Though illiterate farmer, I shared my experience without fear and hesitati<strong>on</strong>.I want to tell you <strong>on</strong>e th<strong>in</strong>g, that I feel very happy and proud to be part of AMEF farmers groupand family, because they have extended my border without limit…….’(as shared bySival<strong>in</strong>gam, a farmer from Veppanatham, Dharmapuri)Kuttimani, AMEF, DharmapuriPanchagavya is precious than anyth<strong>in</strong>gIn our work<strong>in</strong>g area we were c<strong>on</strong>duct<strong>in</strong>g Farmer Field School. As per our advice, a group offarmers prepared panchagavya mixture. One farmer sprayed panchagavya to his cott<strong>on</strong>crop and got good results. The rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g panchagavya was stored <strong>in</strong> his storeroom forfuture use. After 4-5 days he went to the storeroom and observed that the panchagavyamixture was stolen by some body. The n<strong>on</strong>-stop discussi<strong>on</strong>smake the watershed project memorable and return back with <strong>in</strong>spirati<strong>on</strong>. Thimmaiah <strong>on</strong>eof the beneficiary became guide, tra<strong>in</strong>er and lecturer to visitors, farmers organisati<strong>on</strong> andalso government departments. His <strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>in</strong> project activities improved his abilitiesand with the help of his farmers group and BAIF rural Development Karnataka (NGO) heformulated his pers<strong>on</strong>ality to become a good speaker. His talks <strong>in</strong> the local languageus<strong>in</strong>g quotes and has ga<strong>in</strong>ed expertise <strong>in</strong> vermicompost, organic agriculture and animalhusbandry. Now, he is a live example for people who want to seek livelihood developmentsthrough project <strong>in</strong>terventi<strong>on</strong>s. Farmer name: Thimmaiah, Marag<strong>on</strong>danahalli, Tiptur Taluk,Tumkur district, Karnataka.BAIF – TumkurMotivati<strong>on</strong> solved the problemIn my cluster village, I came to know that s<strong>in</strong>ce 6 m<strong>on</strong>ths, group meet<strong>in</strong>gs and activitieswere not go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong> properly due to problem created by few members. I identified thosemembers (two) who were problematic. One day I called them to our office and appreciatedas if they are the lead farmer / progressive farmer <strong>in</strong> the village. I c<strong>on</strong>v<strong>in</strong>ced them and gavegroup resp<strong>on</strong>sibilities. I asked them to share about their family and activities, which wereused for the preparati<strong>on</strong> of case study. I also told them that <strong>on</strong>ce the case study is sharedwith others they will also become more popular. I also gave them azolla, which wasstocked <strong>in</strong> the office. Then they were very happy and agreed to c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ue the group activitiesby tak<strong>in</strong>g lead resp<strong>on</strong>sibility. After a few days I saw the group activities and meet<strong>in</strong>gs werego<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong> nicely without any complicati<strong>on</strong>.
