WATERCARE SERVICES LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2010Midge ComplaintsMidge breeding at the Mangere Wastewater Treatment Plant was kept undercontrol and no midge complaints were received during the year. The result can beattributed to a year-round monitoring and management programme that focuseson controlling midge breeding grounds around the plant and on reducing midgebreeding grounds in the community through public awareness initiatives. Effectiveresponse continues to be required particularly when warm, wet weather createsconditions in which midges thrive.Odour Complaints at the Mangere Wastewater Treatment PlantThere were six verified odour complaints received during the year compared to 11 in2008/09. All complaints were responded to in a timely manner. Odour control measurescontinue to be an important focus at the plant and include the use of covers and odourfilter beds as well as stationary and mobile deodoriser spraying units.a five-year period. Project Storm 2, the award winning initiative completed in 2008 toidentify improvements in Watercare’s network model, was used to support the need forcapacity upgrade projects where required to help reduce the risk of overflows. Watercarecontinues to invest in the wastewater network to reduce both the number and impactof overflow events. The short-term target is to have fewer than six dry-weather overflowsannually; however, the stretch target indicated in the ruler is for zero.Combined System Storm/Wastewater OverflowsThe completion of Project Hobson was a substantial achievement in terms of workto reduce combined storm and wastewater overflows. The new tunnel and pumpstation that were constructed are capable of storing wet-weather flows and therebyreducing the risk of combined overflows into Hobson Bay. The project will result inimprovements to the local environment and increase the recreational opportunities inthe bay, once the demolition of the old sewer is completed in the final quarter of 2010.Wastewater OverflowsThree dry-weather overflows occurred in Watercare’s wastewater network. Two incidentswere from pump stations and the third from a sewer the result of breakages andleaks. All incidents were responded to in a timely and appropriate manner to minimiseadverse environmental effects. A debrief occurred in all instances as part of continuouslearning to identify and avoid future occurrences.
