ACTIVITY SHEET
BE A ROCK DETECTIVE
Choose your favourite rock and research carefully how it was created, where you would be likely to find
it and how it might be used by people.
Feel it and study it to really get to know the textures and colours.
Make a "WANTED" poster to hang on the wall. The rest of the class can try to match the 'guilty' rock with
your description. You can work alone or in groups.
Start off with a big heading, for example:
Wanted:
Oscar Obsidian
Oscar Obsidian is a sharp guy.
He can cut through most things.
He is hard to see in the dark.
Once he was really hot stuff.
But now he is a real cool dude.
Auckland Museum 25
Select a snappy name.
Begin with the same letter as the rock.
Describe some of the rock's properties.
Is it used in a special way? (shape/weight).
Describe something of the colour or texture.
Hint at the way the rock was created.
What is the rock like now? Compare it to someone's
personality. Add things about where this stone is likely
to be found, whether or not it is rare/precious/highly
valuable etc.
Picture of the wanted stone wearing the clothes you
think would suit its description.
