Every morning Emma getsher vitamin fix with a traditionalAustralian breakfast of vegemitetoast and tea.Franco-anglo adventurer Emma Grubbis Bondi’s busiest dentist, swing-dancer,runner, swimmer and all round dynamo.Emma travelled to Australia in 2001and was immediately seduced bySydney’s laid-back outdoor lifestyle andnatural beauty.Eight years on and she’s a Bondi local.When she’s not hiking in the Tasmanianwilderness or caring for cavities at oneof Sydney’s top dental practices, she canbe found at 6am riding south towardsMalabar along one of Australia’s mostcelebrated and beautiful coastlines.

The ride along Sydney’s easterncoastline is very popular withlocals and visitors alike. But getup early enough and the viewsare yours alone.

On returning to Bondi the dayis warming up and Emma takesa dip (between the flags ofcourse!) to cool off. Bondi is oneof Australia’s most iconic beachesand the home of winter swimmingclub The Icebergs as well asthe City to Surf marathon.

True devotion - Frank is seriousabout his bike. When not in use,it’s neatly stored in a special placeamidst his favourite photographsand prestigious awards.A native to Cape Town and having grownup during South Africa’s darkest times,Frank Herholdt rebelled at a young ageand enrolled at art school against hisparents wishes. In the 80’s, he learnedthe ropes of the business as an assistantto many big name photographers beforehis own career took off. With his job,he has travelled the world and workedfor clients ranging from internationalcorporations to small charities. Franknow lives with his wife Helena Karlssonand their two young sons in a convertedpub in Shoreditch, London, an area fullof creative minds.

At a very young age Frankdiscovered his love for interestingimages. Now, hopefully, the nextgeneration will have the samepassion.

For Frank, even the mostimportant meetings take placein a casual atmosphere.The restaurants and pubs inthe Shoreditch neighbourhoodare far more interesting thanan office meeting room.

Only about 20 kilometres fromHelsinki, the virtually untouchedbeauty of Nuuksio National Parkis the perfect place to get awayfrom it all.The name Elena Leeve is becomingmore and more well known in theScandinavian movie and theatre industry.At the young age of 26, Elena can alreadylook back at a long list of movie and TVproductions in which she was cast.She’s also the two-time winner of theJussi Award, the main national filmaward of Finland.When Elena needs a change of scenery,she jumps on her bike and explores thevast landscapes of her homeland - herfavorite escape.

Elena enjoys a cup of coffee(a favourite Finnish activity)while waiting to catch the ferryto Suomenlinna Island, a heavilyfortified island and former Swedishstronghold from the 18th century.There she’ll attend rehearsalsfor her current project “Siniväriset”,playing at the well known openair Summer Theatre.

Every new day brings thepotential to do great things.With that in mind, Neal prepareshimself for his work, promotingbicycles for transportationin San Francisco.For 29 year old Neal Patel of San Francisco,the question was not if he would helpchange how cities work, but when andhow. Luckily, he’s found his calling asCommunity Planner at the San FranciscoBicycle Coalition (SFBC). After studyingPublic Health in college, Neal was an HIVprevention volunteer through the PeaceCorps in Madagascar. His interests havealways been tied to making a differenceand working with a community, workingactively on improving standards andcreating better places to live. Neal beganto think about the current transportationchallenges in America, and afterdiscovering his enthusiasm for bicycleshe knew he had to get involved andhelp spread bicycling: a simple solutionto many complicated problems.

The work of a Community Planneris very diverse. Whether he’sfighting to improve road conditionsfor cyclists, or building supportfor a new bike lane, the resultshave a direct impact on the public,making Neal’s job very rewarding.

When asked about the benefitsof cycling, Neal has the answersready. “Besides reducing pollutionwhen used instead of a car,bikes promote self-expression,they create equality and caneven form communities.”

On Neal’s desk in the SFBC office,flyers for upcoming campaignsneed his attention. Organizingmembers and fighting for politicalchange takes time and can betedious but the rewards are worththe effort when a new bicycle laneis won for San Francisco’s crowdedinner city streets.

The recently - approvedSan Francisco Bike Plan willgreatly expand the bike networkand nearly double the milesof bike lanes in San Francisco.This will be a big boon to allcurrent and future cyclistsand the City as a whole.Neal rides an Urban saddleWhen Neal Patel moved to San Franciscoin 2006, he quickly fell in love with the bicyclefor transportation. Through his work firstas a volunteer and now as a staff memberof the SFBC, he knows that one way to spreadhis passion is simply to get more people ridingevery day. “While San Francisco rates amongthe top five US bicycle-friendly cities, we arestill light years from enjoying the livable streetsthat define many European cities, and stillface challenges in transforming our streets”.Politics and public perception is shiftingthough, and Neal loves creating and improvingthe streets of San Francisco for all whouse them.

Malaika’s two children Naimaand Pablo are great helpersin the kitchen and often providetheir mom with new ideas forher graphic design projects.For 41 year old, Swiss born MalaikaKrüger, the task of finding the rightlocation for television, photographyor event productions in and aroundMunich is a challenge she cannot resist.In addition to running her own creativebusiness, Malaika, a graphic andfashion design graduate, has beena location scout for over three years.She has discovered that her bicycleis the ultimate secret weapon whenit comes to finding just the right place.

For Malaika, riding her bikeis the perfect way to maintainthe balance between work andleisure. When hunting for newlocations, she not only discovershidden pockets of Munich,but also gets to spend preciousmoments with her two children.

Malaika combines breakfastwith an on-site meeting for a TVproduction. The authentic charmof Cafe Tambosi’s sun-floodedgarden is irresistible to manyproducers. It also holds the titleof the oldest Italian cafe in Munich.

Recently a unique project,Urban Art, was searchingfor a particularly unusual venue.Malaika found this oversizedhigh security bank vault in thebuilding of the former LandesZentralbank near the EnglishGarden in Munich.

“I love to do my job by bike”admits Malaika Krüger.“Because of it, I can exploreeven the most hidden locations”.She often meets new peoplewhile scouting - perfect fornetworking!

The many facets of Malaika’s work andher role as mother keep her very busy.Her involvement in organizing the UrbanArt project was one of her larger jobs.In total, over 30 people were needed onstaff to provide the right mood and createthe inspiring surroundings for the event.Projects like these are demanding, yet,Malaika enjoys her job tremendously,especially the direct contact with othercreative people.As part of the Urban Art project,“Kunst im Tresor”, over 35international artists displayedtheir drawings, pictures, toys andvirtual artwork at the bank’s vault.Ten artists even performed theirart live on oversized canvasesfor all to experience.Malaika rides a Premium saddle

Playing long nights in the jazz clubsof Shanghai means that mostdays begin rather late for Feng.Still, when the music moves you,there’s little time for sleep.When thinking about jazz, Chinaisn’t the first country that comesto mind. Feng Yucheng, a verygifted young man and his trumpet,are determined to change this.Feng was born in 1978 in the provinceof Sichuan. Hoping to give his sona better future, his father introducedhim at a young age to classical music.It turns out, this was Feng’s ticketto a life he could only dream of.

Like any large city, Shanghaiis a busy place. Both safe andpractical in one, the bicycle isthe perfect mode of transportationto get through the crowded streets.Best of all, you can even parkinside your apartment.

On his way to the radio station,where Feng is host of a verypopular music program, it’s notuncommon for him to stop andtry out some of his new tunes.

At 18, jazz entered Feng’s life whena Chinese pianist handed him a CDby Miles Davis by the title “Kind of Blue”.After hearing it just once, Feng knew rightaway, that jazz was the sound for him.Over the years, Feng has made a namefor himself by playing in clubs and atcountless international jazz festivalsright next to legends like Wynton Marsalis,Roy Hargrove and Marcus Miller.Nowadays, Feng is busy with jam sessionsor composing his own arrangements,mixing sounds of different styles andcultures, creating the unique sound of Dub.

Although Feng has reachedinternational fame, he enjoysnothing more than taking a tourof his town, getting inspiredby the rhythm of the streets.
