www.tempoplanet.comME CASA FANTASTICOMY TOTALLY AWESOME HOMEBy Aditya JainCAVE COOLIt all began with a cave. If we are to believearcheologists, cavemen (and cavewomen)weren’t very particular about their houses. They generally believed that as long asthey didn’t have to share their bed with abear, the cave was good enough to live in.A few industrious Neanderthals started todecorate them, so they would have somethinginteresting to look at as they preparedbreakfast… but on the whole things were keptquite simple. As our engineering capabilitiesevolved, we’ve created a dizzying arrayof residential options, from apartmentsand villas, to floating homes and soaringskyscrapers, to luxurious palaces and farawaytree houses…to way more.SECRET TUNNELSPerhaps you’d like an apartment that rotates, allowing the building opposite to have anew set of neighbors every 24 hours? Maybeyou want a duplex with a fireman’s poleconnecting your two floors? You may alsowant to have a secret passageway guarded bya bookcase? Well, why not? The passagewaydoes not have to go anywhere…it can come outthe fireplace into the same room (you know,it’s just the principle of the thing).SNOW DREAMSA friend of mine recently shared his vision ofthe whacky and awesome. Being an engineer,he had everything worked it all out. ‘Install asnow machine on the roof and leave it on,’ hesays. ‘But snow would fall on everyone’s headsso what’s the point?’ I argue. He shushes me,‘I’m not finished: install a snow machine inthe roof, so snow starts falling down. Thenabout 10 feet up the wall, you put in ventswhich blow super heated air across the room, melting the snow. You also put in vents onthe other side to suck in the water vapor, which gets cooled down and is transferredback to the snow machine in a pipe. Don’tyou see?’ he exclaims, gesturing wildly. ‘You’dsee snow falling towards you but it wouldnever reach the ground! It would melt andget transferred back into the snow machine.’Hmm, I scratch my head. Totally looney, yetpretty impressive.ENGLISH BUTLERFor the uber-rich, archery fields, go kartingtracks, bowling alleys, and movie theatersare too common these days. It seems toreally stand out you have to do build theextraordinary, the extravagant or theridiculous. If you’re stuck with a few hundredmillion dollars just burning a hole in yourpocket, don’t waste the opportunity, I say.Hire a film crew to construct the set fromJurassic Park on your front lawn, completewith velociraptors and Jeff Goldblum(everything has a price). Buy two penthousesin adjacent buildings and connect them witha fast train. Get yourself an English Butler todo your bidding, and name him Worthingtonor Farthington (or something else that endsin ‘thington’). Take the initiative and make ithappen. This isn’t the stone-age anymore. Letyour imagination loose and wild.LAUNCH: GANTA NEW FRAGRANCE FOR MENThe new GANT fragrance is inspired by the freshness of the sea andthe woody aroma of boats. Tar, ocean and wood scents blend with notesof lemon, coriander and lavender, resulting in a fresh and masculinescent. The design of the bottle embodies the nautical theme: the oceanblue, solid molded glass has a surface resembling braided wicker (thetransport baskets used on boats in the early days of seafaring).Pick up the new GANT fragrance at a mall near you.TALKING BOOKSBy Azza El MasriTHE HAKAWATIOF SULTANS, EMIRSAND ENDLESSADVENTURESA book by Rabih Alameddine(Anchor Books, 2008)If you’re anArab you mayremember thestories yourparents used totell you whenyou were young. You’d sit in theliving room, with your eyeswide open asyour imagination took you to thelands of sultans, emirs and genies…Doyou remember the beautiful world ofpungent spices and swathes of colour; ofendless adventure and beautiful damselsin distress? What if I told you that these whimsicaldepictions are the foundations of ourArab storytelling traditions? Like theHand of Fatima in Arabic folklore, forinstance. Or the reason we feast on lambat the Eid Al-Adha…Meet our protagonist Osama al-Kharratwho returns to Beirut in 2003 after beingnotified about his father’s grave illnesson Eid al-Adha. As we are introducedto his Lebanese family and lifestyle,Osama ventures into his family’s past, recalling his roots and remembering hisgrandfather, the founder of the Kharratfamily. The grandfather Alemeddine, through this book, becomes thehakawati, the storyteller.Fables and rich tales of the Middle Eastbegin to unfold as we dig deep into thepast. Alameddine weaves tale upon tale, going back to the time of emirs andsultans, to the days of Abraham andIsaac, and all the way to Adam and Eve.The charm of this book is in the wayAlameddine reaches out to the readerand beckons to him from the folds of hisnovel: “Listen,” he begins, “Let me takeyou on a journey beyond imagining.”And what a journey it is. Beautifullywritten, The Hakawati is a novel of fablesthat cherish Arab culture, celebrateIslamic traditions, and takes an honestlook at Lebanese culture and history.www.tempoplanet.com | 07

REACTIONS FROM THE OTHER CONTESTANTSI have always enjoyed singing, but havebeen too shy to sing in front of other peopleuntil recent years. PRESENTSCUPCAKE HEAVENTHE SOFT, THE RICH AND THE YUMMY!Saniya Ali does a roundup for Tempo of the best cupcake places in town.DOUBLE CHOCOLATE HEAVENCARAMEL CRUNCHWHERE: Bloomsbury’sBUILD: Chocolate sponge with chocolate fudge icingCOMMENT: Located at the heart of Al Wahda Mall, thiscupcakery is hard to miss. With its red and black décor andmahogany furnishing, this little café provided me with a prettyclassy experience. The staff was more than willing to helpme pick out the perfect cupcake to indulge in and I was soonmunching my way through a Double Chocolate Heaven cupcake.Chocolate heaven: the smooth texture of the fudge icing mixedwith the chocolate sponge left me wanting more. The spongewas baked to perfection with the moisture completely locked in,making it possibly the best cupcake I have ever had!RECOMMENDATION: Definitely my best cupcakeexperience so far.RATING:WHERE: KitschBUILD: Vanilla sponge with crunchy caramel andcrushed nutsCOMMENT: Decorated in basic white this tiny take-out caféhas rows of cupcakes lining the counters. An intense battle tookplace in my head and I eventually picked the Caramel Crunchcupcake. I received my cupcake in a Chinese style take-out boxcomplete with a thin metal handle. The cutlery provided in thecafé was made of wood and was biodegradable. I eagerly took mycupcake home and sat down to eat it. The topping on the cupcakeconsisted of a thin layer of butter cream icing with deliciouslycrunchy caramel and nuts covering it; this is not your gardenvariety vanilla sponge cupcake!RECOMMENDATION: Great combinations, I want to trythem all!RATING:RED VELVETKIT KATWHERE: Maison SucreBUILD: Red velvet sponge with cream cheese icingCOMMENT: This adorable cupcake café is hidden amongstsome busy city streets. Decorated with soft pastel coloursand candy themed décor, when it came to the cake this cafédefinitely left me wanting. First, the staff seemed impatient andwas not very helpful when I asked about the toppings. I decidedto stick to the traditional Red Velvet, assuming that nothingcould go wrong with the house specialty and café namesake…but was I in for a surprise! The sponge had an odd consistency;it lacked moisture and the cream cheese icing was somewhatlumpy.RECOMMENDATION: Disappointing, but I’m no quitter;I’ll go back someday and try another cupcake.RATING:WHERE: Sugar Daddy’sBUILD: Chocolate sponge with vanilla butter cream andcrushed Kit KatCOMMENT: Sugar Daddy’s is one of the oldest and mostpopular cupcakeries in Abu Dhabi. It is located on the Corniche, which in my opinion is probably the most ideal place to enjoya sinful treat such as this. The friendly staff greeted me withwarmth and cheerfully handed me my cupcake. Because of mysoft spot for chocolate I picked the Kit Kat cupcake and sat downto fully appreciate the taste and texture of the cupcake. I lovedhow the vanilla butter cream complimented the crushed Kit Kattopping and the rich lightness of the sponge cake.RECOMMENDATION: Yummy cupcake, and perfect placeto enjoy itRATING:16 | www.tempoplanet.com

JOB-HUNTINGPROTOCOLWHY A JOB INTERVIEW IS LIKE ASKING A GIRL OUTBy Rohith BhatTHE TEENPHILOSOPHERON THE MEMES OF MORALITYBy Ahmed SamirMorality governs us; our race is inseparably shackled to itsproximity (and not unfortunately so). To be human is to be generallyexpected to conduct yourself morally (regardless of the perennialquestion of whether we are born moral or otherwise). So inextricablylinked to the fiber of our collective existence is this conclusivemoral structure that determines what is acceptable and what is not.It influences our opinions and decision-making and, if you step outof line, you are rendered an abject offender, veering maliciouslyfrom the Human Way. So in a nutshell, morality is important, andso its origin. This, I came to learn, is what is known as the memeticevolution.Picture this: I’m sitting in a room with about 15 strangers in mySunday best fidgeting nervously and going over my lines again andagain for my first interview when it hits me, “I’ve been through thisbefore! A few days before Valentine’s Day when I asked what’s-hernameout for the school dance!!”It starts off with selecting our Sunday best and while most womenhave perfected this time waster/process into an art form, most guys(not including ‘metro’ men) have yet to master the art and thus spendhours, sometimes even days trying to find the right dress to impress. Then comes the practicing of lines. You want to be funny but not aclown, you want to appear smart but not a wise guy, and you want totell them that you’ll be there for them but set the boundaries so thatyou’re not a human doormat. And all this has to be communicated inless than 10 minutes! Most importantly, the body language…you don’t want to slouch, youdon’t want to be stiff, you want to appear relaxed but not too relaxed, you want to appear business like but not too formal. In other words, you want be their friend, confidant, go-to-guy,reliable Joe, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, the whole JusticeLeague, all rolled into one dazzling package. But not so good that itappears you’re too good to be true! Difficult, isn’t it?Surprised dear reader? Well don’t be, all aspiring Romeos (read ‘men’)and Juliets have gone through this gruelling process of getting thatone look, that one smile or, simply put, getting someone to say thosethree special words that last a lifetime...You Are Hired!Facebook pages (and most social networking sites, too) are filled tochoking-point with recently emerged memes, those funny (at least, that’s the intention) pictures with a repeating and common imageunderlined by a tagline - the Yao Ming smile is one that is easilyBECAUSE OF OUREVOLUTIONARYBACKGROUND,WE HOLD OURSUBJECTIVESURVIVALPARAMOUNT ANDVALUE THOSEWHO DO THESAME.recognisable. Memes, however, are muchmore than humourous joke-material; theyare intrinsic to a theory that explains thedevelopment of our species’ moral system.Memes, simply, are repeating units ofnon-biological matter (which explains whythose pictures are called memes: the picturesrepeat while the taglines change) and it’s thatmeme, now an idea, a belief, a unit of cultureinstead of just an image, that, after its firstprimeval presence is pronounced, proves advantageous and socontinues to exist. The most central basis of the biological (and nowmemetic) evolution is that that which survives, survives. The tenantsof our universal morality must have proved evolutionarily superiorto others, and thus they survived and were repeated enough so thatthey came to constitute our common moral grounding. But that prompts a question: Why, then were kindness and goodness,as opposed to brutality and cruelty, considered favourable andworth keeping? And why, by extension, are cruelty and immoralbrutality reviled and denounced? We hate the evil and malevolent, don't we? In that respect (and in blatantly many others) we are notmuch different from our early ancestors. As social and hierarchalmammals, our early ancestors understood (by way of brutallyextensive trial and error) that an animal that cares for the interestof others as well as its own (kindness) is loved by the others for thebenevolent discrepancy, and rises within the hierarchical circles;consequently, too, was the wholly selfish mammal loathed for itsself-centered ways and ungenerous cares, and its place within thepack demoted. Because of our evolutionary background, we hold oursubjective survival paramount and value those who do the same. Ilove myself, and you for loving me.The early ancestor - the successful one at least - was as much apurposely selfish being as a demagogue, and it’s funny to think thatmorality itself, the inclinations of love and caring and generosity, arises primarily from prevalent and necessary selfishness. Vocalist and rhythm guitaristJONATHAN KELLYLead guitaristTOM WOLFEThe drummerFRANK SMITHBassistSARAH JOUBERTTHE TALENTED KOMONDORS:YOUTH “BECAUSE ‘BREAKING THE SILENCE’ JUST DIDN’T CUT IT !”By Sharon Carvalho“Naming ourselves ‘The Komondors’started out as a bit of a joke, really,”says Welsh lead guitarist, 17-year-oldTom Wolfe. “We used to call ourselves‘Breaking the Silence’ but before aperformance at the French School,as a joke, we used the name ‘TheKomondors’ (which happens to be apoodle with dreadlocks). We were goingto change it but then we performed atThe Dream Players at Al Wahda Mallin April and then everyone knew us as‘The Komondors.’ So it just stuck!”The Komondors have been playing together forabout three years now and comprise four 17year olds from the British School Al Khubairat(BSAK). They are lead guitarist Tom Wolfe,French-Algerian bassist Sarah Joubert, Englishdrummer Frank Smith, and Scottish vocalistJonathan Kelly.Being in the final year of school means jugglingextra activities with band practice. It also meansthat The Komondors don’t get to jam togethermore than once a week. Still, it is their raw talentthat brings them all together no matter what.“We try to squeeze in as much practice as we can, especially if we are performing somewhere… butit’s not always easy,” said Sarah.“It’s especially hard over the summer wheneveryone goes off on holiday, but we try ourbest to practice as much as we can,” says Frankwho plans on getting a drumming degree atUniversity. As for the rest of them, continuingto play with a band at university is somethingthey all want to do and seeing as this is the finalyear for all four, they are doing all they can tomake the most of it, and that includes makingtheir own music.“We all have ideas and bits of music and lyricsthat we have come up with and we hope to beable to perform an original song by the end ofthe year but, like we said, it’s hard because we areso busy with school,” said Jonathan.Apart from performing for The Dream Playersin April and in September, the kids have playeda few gigs around Abu Dhabi. “We’ve played atthe French School a few times and at the Frenchmusic festival ‘Fete de la Musique’ at the ShangriLa Hotel. The festival was such that there wereperformances happening all around the Souqarea and my guitar teacher managed to get a spotfor us,” said Sarah. But nothing, she says, compared to performingon stage for The Dream Players where theysuddenly went from performing for 200 peopleto an audience of a 1000. “We were completelystressed out but we loved it,” Tom added. All four are very aware that their musicaljourney would not have been possible had itnot been for the support they receive from thestaff at the school. “Everyone at BSAK performsand learns classical music so it was hard to fitin initially but one day Mr Lyall, the Directorof Performances, sent me an email and told meto get in touch with the singing teacher whowanted me to organize a rock concert! We endedup playing about six songs and that sort ofchanged things for us,” said Tom.Sarah adds that it’s not just the musicdepartment but also their other teachers that letthem leave class to practice and support themeven when they do crazy things like break outinto an impromptu performance in the middleof lunchtime!20 | www.tempoplanet.com

ARTBALANCINGACT:LAURA TALHAOUISUCCESSFUL ARTISTAND LOVINGMOTHERTempo’s Sharon Carvalho speaks withmother and artist Laura Talhaoui whotries to find a balance between her twopassions.French artist Laura Talhaoui has establishedherself in Abu Dhabi but her experience andinspiration come from being born and raised inParis, living in London and from every city shehas visited.Being a mother of three comes first but Lauraalways finds time to create and share her giftwith those who appreciate it.“The thought of creating imaginative worldsfor others to enjoy and appreciate is what droveme to become an artist,” explains Laura. “Anartist has in their hands a wonderful way ofcommunication and self expression and theymust share this gift with the world.”MOROCCAN INSPIRATIONAs well the cities she has lived in or visited,Laura finds inspiration from the thingsaround her.“Life itself is my greatest source of inspiration.I learned to look at the world differently, topay attention to the simplest things such as therising sun, the colours of spices, and the windblowing on a palm tree.”“The Moroccan culture plays a very big partin my artwork. From Islamic designs to therichness of traditional fabrics, Morocco aboundswith countless things to discover as well asvarious talented artists.”“Most of my work revolves around the ‘Khamsa’,also known as The Hand of Fatima. To myknowledge, not many artists have chosen thissymbol as the main part of their art. Being amixed media painter, I also use an extensivevariety of materials such as plaster, glue, glitter, paper and so on, combined with allsorts of paints to build up texture and relief. My work is a combination of naive, abstractand folk art.”EXHIBITIONS AND CHARITYWORKGetting the public to view their work isalways difficult for artists, so Laura wasproud to be one of the two UAE-based artiststo exhibit at the recent London ParallaxInternational Art Fair.“In my opinion, one of the main challengesis to get your work noticed. It needs toprovoke a reaction from the viewers, anemotion or maybe just curiosity.”“I have exhibited my work at theMillennium Hotel in Abu Dhabi andparticipated in the ‘Guess the Artist’exhibition at Ghaf Gallery in 2010. I alsotake part in charities as much as I can, including the K9 Puppy Ball in Dubai.”GREATEST REWARDMotherhood is her other great joy, butsometimes she finds balancing her roles as amother and an artist like being on a tightrope, and offers this advice to budding artists.“You need to be totally dedicated to yourart. It's a very long, tricky road. It requires agreat deal of work which can stay unknown orunappreciated for a very long time. But beingable to paint freely on a daily basis is truly thebiggest reward of all.”“W. Clement Stone once said, ‘Aim for themoon. If you miss, you may hit a star’ andI believe that this is one of the greatestquotes ever as it is applicable to so many lifeexperiences.”To find out more about Laura and herbeautiful artwork, go to her websitewww.lauratalhaoui.com.www.tempoplanet.com | 25

THE PLANETARIANSEXPLORING OUR LANDSCAPEPRESERVING LAND AND SEABy Emma KirkmanThe UAE is a small but diverse country, witha range of landscapes, coastlines and wildlife.Although most of us deal with sand on a dailybasis, and it impacts our lives, how muchthought do you give to the UAE’s diverse andvariegated terrain?Having lived in the UAE for the past two years,I have only recently ventured into the NorthernEmirates to see the startling different terrainthat awaits. The breathtaking mountains are a completechange from the flat sands of Abu Dhabi andDubai. Even the mountainous dunes of Al Ainare dwarfed by the valleys and peaks in Fujairahand Ras Al Khaimah.Even more spectacular is what can be foundunder the sea in the Northern Emirates.Mussandam is renowned for its spectaculardiving and underwater terrain, but did youknow that there is just as much diversity offthe shores of Fujairah and KhorFakkan? Evenwithin sight of a container port you can finddiverse coral reefs, home to a huge range ofspecies, and if you catch them at the right time, packs of reef sharks. There is nothing like taking your first look downonto this underwater world from the surfaceand seeing shoals of fish swim past. Some DiveCenters in Fujairah have taken the enterprisingstep of creating artificial reefs to create homesfor wildlife under the water, and are monitoringthe health of the oceans there, and on thenatural reefs.Monitoring the health of the reefs is key as theygive us an indication as to the health of ouroceans. Corals can be very sensitive to prolongedperiods of raise temperatures, and the wildlifethat depends on them are easily affected as well.Whilst there are many efforts to conserve andpreserve the reefs around the UAE, many arestill under threat from dredging, ocean trafficand changes in the sea state due to globalwarming. The UAE is in a unique position tobe able to study the reefs, as the reefs off AbuDhabi (yes, there are some!) live in water that isgenerally warmer than the accepted tolerancerange. Scientists are monitoring these reefsto see how they respond to the different seatemperatures, and changes in sediment andnutrient levels. It is key that the corals of the UAE are preserved. So next time you take a dip in the sea, why notbring a mask and snorkel and see what you canreally see?Emma Kirkman is afreelance productionand communicationprofessional, andpassionately devotes herspare time to helping ThePlanetarians to spread theenvironmental message.Post a message to Emma atwww.facebook.com/theplanetarians orwww.twitter.com/theplanetariansGET ENGAGED. BREAKING LANGUAGE BARRIERSCOMMUNITY SIMPLIFYING ARABIC LEARNINGBy Liz KinaneMain screenMaria and her inspiration, KeyaJana recording voice oversApp iconKeya recording voice oversMaria Menezes was always aware ofthe challenges parents face teachingArabic to their children. She scouredthe market for an “interactive and funmethod” to help her daughter Keya whowas having difficulty learning Arabicin school but couldn’t find anythingsuitable. So the Indian born Dubai basedmum, decided to stop being an observerand instead decided to take an activerole in her daughter’s education.Maria started by doing some research and soonrealized that she was not alone in her plight. Shediscovered that many parents faced the samedilemma and that many shared her feeling ofhelplessness. So Maria gave up her day job as theFounder and Creative Director of The Carameltheory and threw herself into the challenge andworked with App Developers to create an iOSbased application called “Something Fishy aboutArabic” that can be downloaded from the AppleApp Store and works on iPod, iPhone or iPad.Maria describes her application as an engaginglearning resource to help children andunderstand and absorb Arabic, and as a greatteaching tool for non-Arabic speaking expats.“The level 1 application is devised for 3-7 yearolds. The first component teaches the letters. Auniverse is created where one can discover whyeach letter exists, along with its sound and its28 | www.tempoplanet.comrelation to other letters. This alternative methodof teaching stimulates and actively engages thelearner,” she explained. The next two modules comprise a series ofgames. Recognising that the “interest of youngchildren is only sustained for a short time” shedesigned games to keep the user engaged forlonger periods while simultaneously enhancingthe learning experience. These games help tobreak down learning obstacles and allow theparticipant to connect to the language in anenjoyable way. There’s also a two-person gamethat helps enrich the bonding experiencebetween parent and child.“Children are like sponges ready to soak innew information; however young childrenwill often resist something if they believe itto be associated with education. So learningis disguised within this resource and theuser acquires new information in a fun andstimulating way.” She adds that the applicationcan also be used by older and more experiencedlearners to refresh their knowledge. As for the character in the game, Maria begana contest on Facebook to name the characterand the educational octopus was finally namedTammy. Not knowing Arabic too well herself,Maria enlisted the help of an Arabic teacherRania Abu Ghush- Hindiyeh. Having beena part of creating the Arabic curriculum forgovernment kindergartens in Dubai, Rania wasthe perfect choice for this App. As for the voicesof the character, well that fun job was left in thedutiful hands of Rania’s 11 year old daughterJana Hindiyeh for Arabic, and Maria’s sevenyear old Keya Menezes for English.Maria has already received a positive responsefor her product with considerable interest fromparents, teachers and the KHDA (Knowledgeand Human Development Authority). Heraim is that the application “will not be used asa one off but alongside school curricula” andalready she looks forward to developing the nextlevel solution, which will be aimed at higherage groups and a version that targets Arabicspeakers. While this app may have begun as her idea,Maria is fully aware that none of this would havehappened without the support she received fromfamily and friends. “They’ve have been hugelysupportive and encouraging and, in fact, a lotof my friends and ex colleagues have pooled intheir resources and talent to help me put the apptogether. Most importantly, I would not havebeen able to do this without my husband, RoenMenezes. He was and will always be the windbeneath my wings,” said Menezes. To find out more or to downloadthe app, go to: http://www.somethingfishyaboutarabic.com/

YasmineStrawberry picking with my brother in EnglandYasmine’s mum, sister and Yasmine in JordanYasmine with her grandparentsGLOBAL NOMAD:YOUTH INTERNATIONAL CITIZENBy Yasmine Ziadat- student at British School Al Khubairat, Abu DhabiIn this fast-paced, technology-drivenera forming an identity can beoverwhelming for the youth of today.Throw in globalisation, being anexpat and living in a multicultural, cosmopolitan city, and you’ve got yourhands full! Knowing where your homeis can certainly be difficult, especiallyfor me, an expat since birth. When I’m asked where “home” is, I neverquite know what to say. I am Jordanian andPalestinian, with a hint of Swiss, and I happen tobe British as well. Being a dual national as wellas never having lived in either Jordan or the UK,I don’t feel that I can confidently claim eitherplace as my one single home. Whilst Englishis my first language, my parents groundedthe foundations of a multilingual lifestyleby teaching me Arabic at a young age, as wellencouraging me to study French at school.I was born in Malaysia, I have moved countriesthree times since then, and alternated betweenschool systems: American, Internationaland British. Constantly moving, I adjustedto change feeling like a new person with eachmove. Through this I have also developed amid-Atlantic accent; further unsettling myconcept of who I am. I sometimes feel like an“Englishman amongst Arabs and an Arabamongst Englishmen” - lyrics coined by Lowkey,an English/ Iraqi rapper.Being a teenager is a bit like being a new personas well, because we’re no longer children, butwe’re not quite adults either. This seven yeartime frame allows us to figure out more aboutwho we are, and what our identity is. If we assessthe people in the world in this day and age, Ithink we’ve come to realise that there is a vastpercentage of people who might feel the way Ido. With immigration, mixed marriages, andexpatriate lifestyles, it is becoming harder tosimply identify where we’re from, and wherehome is. With an ever increasing population,we’re also increasing cultural variation. Havingfamily and friends scattered across the globealso helps to blur the boundaries of where“home” is.I’m only half way through these seven years ofadolescence and I’m still unaware of who I reallyam. Although all this travelling has made myidentity ambiguous, I love it. I feel that travelhas opened a lot of doors for my identity andhas made me open-minded. I have travelled inmy past, I travel presently, and I know I willcontinue to do so in the future. Whether or notwe can ever pin-point a home on the map, we canidentify ourselves as humans, all living on thesame earth.www.tempoplanet.com | 29

I immediately ran over to see what the commotion was, and thefirst thing I saw was his leg. It was in the right place, except that his footwas facing the wrong direction. Ouch...He was drowsy and appeared miserable. Time to think straight.Next, I see that his blood pressure is in the toilet and he looks like he isout of breath. He’s been with us for only minutes but already we knowwhat injuries are trying to kill him.But today, he’s in luck. He’s surrounded by a wealth of experience in theform of two experienced trauma doctors with an enthusiastic crack teamof residents and nurses. We immediately set out to repair his exploded lungs, straighten outhis crooked leg, fix his moribund blood pressure and relieve him of hishorrific agony. By the time he was ready for the operating room, he wascomfortable and talking with us.He’ll be ok. All in all, he was lucky that he arrived at the right shop.I mention this because the press had recently attacked the credibility ofthe emergency care in a high profile center in the UAE. The professionalabilities of the staff had been unjustly critiqued resulting in escalatedverbal abuse by patients towards the medical staff. The fallout was awful, resulting in a lot of medical staff questioning their role in being here.Maybe we aren’t so welcome? But for me, it comes down to this: if we are so bad, why do patients keepcoming back? Many by choice. Why do the sickest patients from otheremirates end up with us so often? Sometimes, directly off the planefrom other countries!!! Lastly, why are we given the responsibility ofteaching young locally educated physicians who will one day take overthe emergency care of the UAE?As Public Enemy once rapped, so relevant in this case: “don’t believethe hype.....”You’re in the best hands in the UAE. Amal Al AgroobiHana MakkiTHE BRAIN THAT SINGSFILMBy Sharon CarvalhoAUTISM AND MUSIC THERAPYPhoto credits: Alwiya ThaniWhen Hana Makki and Amal AlAgroobi met at the Berlin Film Festival, little did they know that their drive andpassion would bring them together towork on socially focused projects. They embarked on their first project‘Half Emirati,’ a film directed by Amaland produced by Hana, that is alreadygetting critical attention.Soon afterwards Amal approached Hana withthe next project, this time to co-direct andco-produce a documentary on a subject that wasfar more challenging, dealing with the complextopic of autism. Amal explains: “Having livedabroad my entire life when I first arrived inmy country, the United Arab Emirates, I wasshocked when I realized that there are subjectsthat are not much talked about in the MiddleEast.”Hana and Amal hope to raise awareness aboutautism through their current collaboration, afilm entitled ‘The Brain that Sings.’ The filmis about two Emirati autistic boys; 18-year-oldMohammed and six year old Khalifa, and theirexperiences during an intensive three monthcourse of musical therapy.Hana and Amal have turned to crowdfunding tofinance both the production of the film and themusic course for the two boys. They’ve alreadyraised 20 percent of the cost of the film, thanksto the Abu Dhabi Music and Art Foundation, and welcome contributions.Hana recollects beginning this project withAmal, “When Amal approached me with ‘TheBrain that Sings’ I was more than eager to get onboard. My passion is documentary and bringingto light stories that hold a truth. It is veryimportant for me to do justice to the familiesin the quality of the film we produce. I havelived with sickness in my own family and I knowthe heavy burden it brings; both the financialpressures of medical bills and the social isolationfrom ‘normal’ society. I hope we get to achieveour goals to give the children this course as weraise awareness about their condition.”Autism is a condition that affects a surprisinglylarge number of families here in the UAE, Hanaexplained. One of the many and very complexissues that arises with autism is the inability tocommunicate. Mohammed and Khalifa sufferfrom the frustration of not being able to expressor fully understand their own emotions. Amaland Hana believe musical therapy will help theboys interact and build their communicationskills.“Khalifa and Mohammed are excellent examplesof the types of stigmas I want to address,” saidAmal. “Here are two boys from two seemingly‘normal and flawless’ Arab families who haveone of these unspeakable problems- they areboth autistic. I wanted to help them. Theirfamilies were itching to get their stories out, eager for people to realize how difficult it is toraise these boys with minimal support and thelack of treatments for them,” said Amal.Eager to complete this project Hana andAmal, have chosen to go the unusual route ofdeveloping a ‘crowd funding’ video to help themraise the necessary funds.“We know that there is no cure for autism. WhatI do know is that by simply giving attention andacknowledging these families and their burdenswe will be making an immeasurable differenceto their lives. Hope is something that shouldnot be underestimated. Mohamed and Khalifacannot express themselves and are crippled withfrustration. We play games like chess, snakes and ladders, Dominoes and othersthat the patients’ want, and there are alsomovie nights that we organize for bothadults and children. This is not just goodentertainment for the patients, but a goodway for them to meet and get to know eachother. We also help at the Outpatient SpecialtyClinics in liaising with patients to getthem a suitable appointment with medicalspecialists.34 | www.tempoplanet.comMelika GhateaMohammed Al AmeriFrom left to right - Badria Al Zaabi, Sayeda Mohammed,Abdurrahman, Me & Sanah ChauhanMEETING PEOPLEThroughout my volunteer work I meet manynew people and many have remained my friends. One of them is Shiraz Sheikh a senior volunteerat SKMC who is involved in many patientactivities such as sports, education (teachingEnglish language and computer skills) andorganizing special events and entertainment.“The experience has been enlightening. mediaAlma KadragicFREEDOM OF THE PRESSWHAT IT MEANS TO MEAs we used to do in school years ago, I’mwriting about how I spent my summervacation or really, the month of August inthe US. Wherever I am, I read newspapersregularly. In the UAE I subscribe to hardcopies of The National and Gulf News, and I breakfast with these papers everyday. At the same time, I subscribe to emailhighlights of the New York Times and WallStreet Journal seven days a week.During August I put The National and GulfNews on hold but continued to receive the Timesand the Journal in email format. SometimesI killed an email because I bought or receivedone of these papers in the hotel. The Journalwas everywhere, free in the Chicago DowntownMarriott as well as in the New York MarriottMarquis and the Washington D.C. Dupont CircleHotel. In each city, USA Today (which I don’t likefor the reasons so many people do like it) wasalso available for free as well as the ranking –sometimes only – local paper. In Chicago, it wasthe Tribune. In Washington D.C., of course, thePost. In New York, the Times. But I didn’t only read the news. For the first timeI visited the Newseum, a museum dedicated tothe news in Washington D.C. I had resisted goingfor several years – some of my former ABC Newscolleagues told me it was too expensive in a citywhere the big national museums are free. TheNewseum costs $20 for adults which I not onlypaid, but paid even more to become a memberand supporter. The exhibits are worthwhile; they trace thehistory of the First Amendment to the Billof Rights in the U.S. Constitution, follow thesequence of events on September 11, 2001,remember some famous newsmen, give childrenthe experience of reporting the news ontelevision, and introduce adults to video gamesabout news.I watched with amusement as a small Japanesegirl whispered correct answers to her father andshowed him how to push the buttons and makethe figures fall in the water or disappear. He wasclumsy; she knew all about video games and wasvery gentle in leading him through this one.I didn’t spend much time with the FirstAmendment exhibit, but that’s because I havetaken it for granted as an American citizen, andI learned from my parents who escaped duringWorld War II from a country that no longerexists what it means to live without a guaranteeof free speech. The First Amendment is part of an addition tothe U.S. Constitution called The Bill of Rightsthat dates back to 1789. It states, “Congress shallmake no law respecting an establishment ofreligion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;or abridging the freedom of speech, or of thepress; or the right of the people peaceably toassemble, and to petition the Government for aredress of grievances.”My careers as a news producer and bureau chiefin the US and Europe; a business owner in theUS and Europe; and an academic and freelancetrainer of journalists and PR specialists wouldhave made no sense without the existence of theFirst Amendment. Most Americans rely on the First Amendmentand cannot understand why some peopleoutside the US believe that the governmentis responsible for everything that appears inmedia.36 | www.tempoplanet.com TO ADVERTISE IN THE WIDEST CIRCULATED YOUTH AND COMMUNITY FOCUSED MAGAZINE IN THE UAE, CALL: 02 491 8624

tamakkan knowledge hubIan MasonLOST INTRANSLATIONMANGLINGMARKETINGMESSAGESI recently watched, for about the third time,Sofia Coppola’s enigmatic film, ‘Lost InTranslation’ and during the movie, perhapswhen Bill Murray and Scarlett Johanssonwere wandering through the streetsof Tokyo in the early hours, my mindswitched to my own ‘lost in translation’experiences in the UAE.Every day I see examples of translation that arebeyond lost. Menus, posters, signs, letters…youname it. The corruption of language - especially, for me, the English language - is very amusingat times. However, communication in business is criticalwhether it be written or spoken. I will leavespoken communication for another time, asI may need a whole issue of Tempo to discussthis. But in terms of written communicationthis is the first contact you have with a potentialcustomer. It could be an advertisement, abillboard or company signage. Take a sign nearmy workplace for example: it reads ‘DressPreseeing Service’. I think that means ‘PressingService’ rather ‘than looking at a dress beforebuying it’.My message is plain and simple. Such errors areinexcusable. They affect the credibility, andtherefore the trustworthiness, of the business.Even if I was interested in dress pressing, couldI trust this business not to overheat the ironingmachine and scorch the dress if they can’t gettheir business message right? This may be idealistic, but in the world ofmarketing and branding, perception iseverything. I will repeat that: perception iseverything! Think of any major brand. Yourperception of it, right or wrong, is the onlyopinion that matters. If you think the food atMcDonald’s is unhealthy, then that’s what it is,no matter how much marketing the companydoes to negate that perception. Maybe over timethe perception will erode but it still influencestoday’s buying choices. As we approach the US presidential elections, the concept of perception will take on greaterproportions. Does Romney have what it takesto be president? Who knows? But his actions, his words, even his mannerisms will all be partof the voters’ perception process and he will bejudged accordingly. The US presidential electionis as much about spin as substance. But back to the UAE. Poorly translatedmarketing materials can cause moments ofamusement, but more seriously they can also, again right or wrong, create some negativeperceptions about the business. This appliesacross all languages, not just English. Bad Hindito-Arabictranslations have the same effect.A native speaker will have a deep distrust ofsomething that is incorrectly translated or spelt. It can also create confusion. Take, for instance, the spelling of ‘Jebel Ali’ in Dubai. Is this theSAVE THE DATE!correct way to spell it? According to manysigns, it could be ‘Jabel Ali’ or even ‘Jabal Ali’depending on the person translating it. Iunderstand it is a phonetic issue, but for anexpat or visiting driver, this messes with theirmind. Official style guides seem to be in shortsupply. The good news is that this is a simple issueto address. All you have to do is ask a nativespeaker if what has been translated makessense before anything is printed. This willavoid a ‘handburger’ being eaten instead of a‘hamburger’. I have been told that ‘hands’ don’ttaste that good.If you are setting up a business, it is often thesmall things that count. As a starting point, make sure that your company name andmarketing messages are not ‘lost in translation’.FREE ATTENDANCENEXT TAMAKKAN SEMINAR! BE THERE!INNOVATION! horoscopeAries: Let someone close to you know exactly how you feel about him orher. This is particularly important if there is adulation on your part. Maybethings won’t work out — but they certainly won’t as long as you keep quiet.Expect proper conduct out of your subordinates and you will get it. Afinancial opportunity could wither away if you hesitate too long.Taurus: A last-minute trip to faraway places could be just what the doctorordered. Excitement and, very probably, romance could well be the result —but only if you let things move at their own pace. Now might be a good timeto begin a serious savings plan.
