CEPOL bringstoge<strong>the</strong>r senior police <strong>of</strong>ficers, supports<strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> a networkand encourages cross-border cooperationin <strong>the</strong> fight against crime, publicsecurity and law and order. CEPOLparticularly focuses on: combatingcross-border crime through specialisttraining; disseminating best practiceand research findings; facilitating exchangesand secondments betweenpolice <strong>for</strong>ces; providing training <strong>for</strong>trainers; developing common curriculato harmonise training programmes;providing training <strong>for</strong> police authoritiesin candidate countries; providingan electronic network <strong>for</strong> sharingknowledge and best practice.CEPOL organises between 80 and100 courses, seminars and conferencesper year onkey topics relevantto police <strong>for</strong>ces inEurope today. Theimplementation <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> activities takesplace at <strong>the</strong> nationalpolice training colleges.In 2007, some1 350 senior police<strong>of</strong>ficers attended aCEPOL activity.CEPOL was establishedas an agency <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>EU</strong> in 2006.The CEPOL Secretariat is based atBramshill, approximately 70 km west<strong>of</strong> London.The agency cooperates with a widerange <strong>of</strong> partners, including o<strong>the</strong>rlaw en<strong>for</strong>cement <strong>agencies</strong> such asEuropol, Eurojust and Interpol. CEPOLhas working agreements with non-<strong>EU</strong>Member States (Norway, Iceland andSwitzerland) and has built relationshipswith non-<strong>EU</strong> Member States anddifferent universities and researchinstitutes.The acronym CEPOL is Frenchand stands <strong>for</strong> Collège européen depolice — <strong>European</strong> Police College (inEnglish).CEPOL has an annual budget <strong>of</strong>about <strong>EU</strong>R 7.5 million (2007) and isfunded by <strong>the</strong> <strong>European</strong> Communities.Improving <strong>European</strong> police cooperation through training25
