National Youth Leadership Training isan intense, 5½ day, outdoor leadershiptraining experience for youth troop, team,and crew leaders. The course goal is toprepare young men and women tobecome superior leaders in their troop,crew, district , council, and otherorganizations they belong to now, and inthe future.Participants learn to use current corporateleadership skills within the framework of theScout Oath and Scout Law. BSA Nationalcarefully developed the NYLT curriculumwith input from current corporate trainers,the United States Air Force Academy, andothers in the training community. Where will the University be held?We are pleased to return to Southern Methodist University again this year. You may access the SMUinformation page here and the “Course Catalog” has additional campus information, parking andbuilding assignments.How do I register?The January 2014 session will be available for online pre-registration via CampMaster beginningOctober <strong>2013</strong>. Pre-registration will close December 6, <strong>2013</strong>. University of Scouting registration flyerswill be distributed at Roundtables and other District meetings beginning in October. The “CourseCatalog” contains instructions on how to access CampMaster and schedule classes.What’s included in my registration fee?In addition to a full day of fun, filled with interesting class sessions, handouts and fellowship with otherleaders, everyone will receive lunch, certificate via email and a commemorative 2014-edition patch.After the event, notes from many of the sessions will be available online.The early-bird fee is $30.00 which runs from open of registration until October 31, <strong>2013</strong>. Regularpre-registration is $40.00 which is valid from November 1, <strong>2013</strong> until November 31, <strong>2013</strong>. Amit Banerjee of Troop 51, sponsored by FirstUnited Methodist Church in Frisco, has been selectedas the council level winner for this award.Amit’s project was to publish the magazine PhilanthropyKids. Philanthropy Kids is a magazine thatpromotes and recognizes philanthropy in kids. Themagazine is dedicated to spreading awareness aboutphilanthropy among kids, educate them, encouragethem and celebrate their contributions to society.William T. Hornaday UnitA Hornaday unit certificate is awarded to a pack,troop, team, or crew of five or more Boy Scouts,Varsity Scouts, or Venturers for a unique, substantialconservation project. At least 60 percent of registeredunit members must participate. At least 60 percentof the registered unit members must participate inthe project. Scouts from Troop 11, sponsored byLiving for the Brand Cowboy Church, removedseveral species of invasive, non-native trees and shrubsalong the Dilsey Creek in Henderson County underthe advisement of Dr. Brian Baumgartner, biologyprofessor at Trinity Valley Community College.William T. His project repairedthe damage caused by erosion at the Windmill HillPreserve in DeSoto.Eagle Project of the Year AwardThe National Eagle Scout Association has establishedthe Glenn A. and Melinda W. Adams National EagleScout Service Project of the Year Award to recognizevaluable service of an exceptional nature by a Scout toa religious institution, a school, community, or otherentity. The award recognizes the Scout for his EagleScout leadership service project, which is part of therequirements for earning the Eagle Scout Award.Medal of MeritThe Medal of Merit may be awarded to a youthmember or adult leader who has performed someoutstanding act of service of a rare or exceptionalcharacter that reflects an uncommon degree of concernfor the well-being of others. Holden McDermott, anEagle Scout from Troop 707 sponsored by DallasElks Lodge 71, woke up in the night and smelledsmoke. He went outside and noticed a neighbor’shouse on fire and immediately went back home andcalled 911. His quick actions helped prevent thesituation from becoming more serious.Honor MedalThe Honor Medal may be awarded to a youth memberor adult leader who has demonstrated unusualheroism and skill in saving or attempting to save alife at considerable risk to self. Wayne Hendricks isa Venture Scout from Crew 425 sponsored by theBSA National <strong>Council</strong>. On July 27, 2012, Wayne wasat a campout and noticed a young boy was strugglingin a swimming area in a creek. Wayne jumped in andgrabbed the boy and towed him to shore. He turnedthe boy on his side while he coughed up water andstayed with him until he was better and his family wasat his side.“Green Bar” Bill Harcourt ScholarshipAwardsOne of our <strong>Circle</strong> <strong>Ten</strong> Scouts and Mikanakawa Lodgearrowman received one of the sixteen “Green Bar” BillHarcourt Scholarship awards to serve on the NationalJamboree Order of the Arrow Staff. Dylan Chan, thechapter chief for Hotowa’e (Northern Lights District)was recognized at the Jamboree by the National OAChairman, Ray Capp; along with the granddaughter ofLord Robert Baden-Powell, Gill Clay.


SERVICE PROJECTOPPORTUNTITIESFifty years ago one of the most tragic incidents inAmerican history happened right here in Dallas,Texas. This November, on the 50th anniversaryof the assassination of President John FitzgeraldKennedy, the world will shift its gaze and look toDallas. The hope of #JFKDAY is that the world willsee a city living out the legacy of a man who calledthis great nation to serve their communities whenhe said, “ask not what your country can do for you,ask what you can do for your country.”The #JFKDAY campaign: [Run, Serve, Remember]brings together, under a united front, a series oftwo events: a 5K run and a Day of Service. Citizensof North Texas will run in their community, servethose in need in their community and rememberthe legacy of the man who originally called themto action. On November 23rd, <strong>2013</strong>, the Day ofService, thousands of volunteers will participate incommunity service projects at over 50 cites acrossDallas County.Scouts are invited to assist with the 5K run and thecouncil-adopted For the Love of the Lake serviceproject, or any other project, on the Day of Service.Texas Discovery Gardens is requesting the help of<strong>2013</strong>/2014 Eagle Scout candidates to make six to tennew wood picnic tables and benches. We would like tohave recycled materials used if possible. We are the firstpublic garden in the state of Texas to be 100% organic,and we want our outdoor seating to reflect our values. EASTERN SKIES DISTRICT cont.Monday, we kicked off camp with Finger Printing anda special appearance by Boys’ Life very own “PEDRO”.Tuesday, we all made it back and were entertainedby “Medieval Times” during our dinner; by the waycampers, Pedro is doing well and survived the swordfight.Thank you for your support for the past 5 years. I haveenjoyed working with each and every one of you.
