Welcome to Greenville,Where You'll Find Decades ofDelegates and Themes Galore!Melissa Eason • Executive DirectorHello Wing Ding delegates! Are youready for another exciting Internationalevent that’s packed withGWRRA friends, family, vendors, seminars, rider courses, entertainment, and even a fewsurprises? I know I am!As you may remember, last year my husband,Jarod, and I were unable to attend WingDing due to the recent arrival of our daughterJessica. But this year, I am pleased to announcethat there will be three generations of my familyattending Wing Ding 30 in Greenville, SouthCarolina, including Jessica! I am very excited tomeet our longtime Members, welcome newMembers, and visit with Wing Ding attendeesas well. And, speaking of welcoming new WingDing delegates, we’ll be holding a special meetand-greetimmediately following OpeningCeremonies on Thursday, July 3, in Hall B ofthe Carolina First Center. And we’re alsobeginning a new program this year—the WingDing Buddy Program. So when you pick upyour Wing Ding 30 registration packet weencourage you, if you’re a longtime attendee,to pick up a red button that reads “Wing DingVeteran,Ask Me, I’m Here To Help.” First-timeattendees, we encourage you to pick up a yellowbutton that reads “My First Wing Ding,Share The Ride With Me.” It’s our hope thatthese buttons will help newbies find WingDing veterans who can help answer questionsfor them. And, for you veteran delegates, it’s afun way to meet first-time Wing Ding delegates, make new friends, and show themaround Wing Ding. But that’s only the start of the fun thingswe have planned this year! We have somegreat new themes and activities planned forWing Ding, most of which will be held indoorsat the newly enhanced Carolina FirstCenter—the largest convention center in thestate. The convention center contains 315,000square feet of exhibition space along with88,000 square feet of meeting and conferencespace.July 2008Based on this year’s Wing Ding theme of“Riding through the Decades,” we’reintroducing daily themes called, “Decades ofthe Day.” These themes will focus on two ormore decades, beginning with the 1950s. Forinstance, Thursday, July 3, will be ‘50s and ‘60sday in which delegates can dress in the attireof either one of those decades. I hope everyonewill join me in dressing for the decadesand also join in the fun of the new “ ’50s or’60s Chapter Competition”.There’s even anew twist to an oldie but goodie event—theMascot Contest—which, this year, will featurea special category for the Mascot mostdressed in the attire from any one of thedecades of the 1950s through the 1990s orbeyond! I’ll even be bringing the mascot fromthe Home Office. You’ll find plenty of other events involvingthe “Decades of the Day” theme every dayexcept Sunday, July 6, due to it being a half-daywith Closing Ceremonies. One you certainlywon’t want to miss is the final theme day eventon Saturday, July 5. Saturday’s event will pushthe limits of all our imaginations as we welcomedelegates to design the “Gold Wing ofthe Future!” This design can be in the formof a toy model, a detailed drawing or even justa picture of the futuristic bike. This bike showwill be judged as a Members’ choice. If you’veever dreamed of something more you’d like tosee on a Gold Wing—if that’s even possible!—bring your ideas and come see the ideas of theother delegates. And speaking of joining in with other delegates, don’t forget our Fourth of July,Guinness World Records attempt for the“Largest Parade of Honda Motorcycles” duringthe Grand Parade. Currently, the recordis only 884 motorcycles. We know we alwayshave thousands of Hondas at Wing Ding! So,let’s get out there and go down in history!GWRRA Members will begin staging the eventat 3:00 p.m. at the New JL Mann High School. From here, Members will travel through thecity’s downtown area and end at the city ofGreenville’s Fourth of July celebration. TheGrand Parade will start promptly at 5:00 p.m.But don’t wait for Greenville’s Fourth ofJuly celebration to check out this beautifulSouthern city with its award-winning downtown.Since our last Wing Ding visit here in2001, the downtown area has been revitalized. Not only does it include an array of restaurants, art galleries, theaters and specialty boutiques, but in the West End district is anincredible structure called the new LibertyBridge that spans the scenic Reedy River FallsHistoric Park and waterfalls. Other revitalizationefforts include the Governor’s School forthe Arts and a new baseball stadium,West EndField, that is reminiscent of Fenway Park andhome to a fitting sculpture of one ofGreenville’s own baseball legends—ShoelessJoe Jackson. With so much to do and so much to see—and so many decades to cover!—we knowyou’ll enjoy your visit to Wing Ding 30 inGreenville this year. We appreciate that youwill be making the journey and wish you all asafe trip to South Carolina and back. Before I close this greeting, I must take amoment to send out a special thank you toCarl and Donna Blackston, District Directorsof South Carolina, for all their help and supportin making this year’s event possible. Also, thank you to George Collins, ChapterDirector SC-F, Charles and Kathy Coleman,Chapter Directors SC-E, and Wayne Cossano,Chapter Director SC-T.And, of course, I’d liketo thank our wonderful corps of volunteerswho give so much of themselves all week longin order to make the events fun and effortlessfor everyone. When you see these folks, besure to let them know how much you appreciatetheir efforts.Enjoy the ride!—Melissa Eason●WD5
