WD6Welcome to Wing Ding 29 in BillingsAre You Ready To Ride?Wing Ding 28 at the GaylordOpryland Hotel & ConventionCenter in Nashville, Tennessee, will remain in our memories for a verylong time. Now, a year later, and withthe many miles we have traveled and themany people we have met as theInternational Couple of the Year, wefind ourselves still excited with whatwent on at Wing Ding 28! The honorbestowed on us was not an obligation—it was an opportunity. Yes, an absoluteopportunity to meet many new friendsas we traveled to GWRRA rallies,Chapter rides and events. We want totake this occasion to say thank-you toeach and every GWRRA Member wemet for the courtesies and kindnessextended to us as we traveled across thisgreat land of the USA and into neighboringCanada as GWRRA Ambassadors. This has been an awesome year oftraveling for us! By the time we get toBillings, we will have toured 34 of theUnited States and five CanadianProvinces during 2006 and 2007.We genuinely support the Couple ofthe Year Program, and the honor begins atthe Chapter level. The GWRRA Chapteris the launching pad for the Couple of theYear program and from there it transitionsto the District and then to the Regionalselection process.Tom & Kathy Peck, InternationalCoordinators for the Couple of the YearProgram, are putting together a great programat Wing Ding to provide anotherRegional Couple with an opportunity tobe selected as the International Couple for2007–2008. The selection process will beheld on Tuesday, July 3, at 1:30 p.m. at theHoliday Inn—Grand Montana hotel.Come out and support your RegionCouple—they will appreciate it!The National Staff selected Billings asthe Wing Ding 29 site and, as it so happens, this is one of our favorite locations.Billings is called “The Magic City” andwe hope everyone who attends finds someBy Jim & Brenda PenningtonInternational Couple of the Year 2006-2007of his or her own magic in this beautifullocation. The area has lots of history foryou to explore, and there are three nationalparks within a day’s ride of Billings:Yellowstone, Glacier and Grand Teton.Yellowstone—together with theBeartooth-Absaroka Wilderness Area tothe north and Teton National Park to thesouth—has become a last bastion in theLower 48 States for large predators suchas grizzlies and wolves. Even the casualvisitor can view large herds of bison, elk, mule deer and pronghorn antelope here.Yellowstone National Park is also thehome of Old Faithful—the most famousof its geysers—and beautiful YellowstoneLake, and the Upper and Lower Falls ofthe Yellowstone River. Glacier NationalPark lies not far away in the northwesternpart of the state adjacent to Canada’sWaterton Provincial Park, creating anothervast area for those on the lookout forinteresting wildlife and arresting scenery.A trip to Wing Ding gives you the opportunityto take in the great riding areas ofMontana and Wyoming and perhaps slipacross the border into Canada and explorethe Canadian Rockies before or after ourrally.W i n g i n ’ W e s t !At our last Wing Ding in Billings in2000, we rode many happy and funmiles with our GWRRA friends andlong-time riding companions Denny &Linda Hahn. We rode the BeartoothHighway several times from Red Lodgeup to Cooke City during the rally. Thesememories will last forever in our mindssince Denny passed away from diabetesand related health issues in 2004. Wehope you each have a long-time travelingbuddy to ride with this year. For the GWRRA Members who havenever experienced Wing Ding, this willbe an event you will never forget! Therewill be so many old and new friendsthere—as well as the planned free concertentertainment with Kenny Rogersand Dolly Parton impersonators, thevendors, scenic rides, seminars, activitiesand optional events, that you will notknow what to do first. Combining all ofthese events and activities adds up to agreat week that puts into effect theGWRRA motto of “Friends for Fun,Safety and Knowledge.”Being your International Couple of theYear for 2006–2007 has been an absolutehonor for us to be GWRRA Ambassadorsand a privilege to represent each of you.As International Couple of the Year, it isour hope that all your journeys this yearhave been safe and happy ones and thatyou will continue to meet and make manynew friends keeping the GWRRAmotto—“Friends for Fun, Safety andKnowledge” going. After headingnorth to the small town of Roundup (population~2,000), you’ll go west to the tinytown of Lavina, Montana (population~200).Lavina was founded by one of theTerritory's best known pioneers, T.C.Power, who organized the Billings-BentonStage Company in 1882, the first northsouthline to carry mail on coaches. Aboutmidway on the stage line, where there wasa good ford across the Musselshell River, established a stage station including a messhouse, bunk house, store, and saloon, andnamed it in memory of a former sweetheart,Lavina. You’ll return to Billings by way ofBelmont, Broadview, Comanche andActon, Montana.●Named for a Sweetheartby Margaret Lehfeldt and Mary MorsannyLavina was founded just forty miles north of the NorthernPacific railhead in Billings by one of the Territory's best knownpioneers,T.C. Power. In earlier years,T.C. Power was well established in Fort Bentonat the time that fortified fur post changed into a thriving city whenthe rush to the gold mines increased river trade on the UpperMissouri.T.C. Power knew until 1880 Central Montana abounded inwildlife with thousands of buffalo but was practically uninhabited.Never the less, he knew that with the coming of the railroad heenvisioned a stage line would be needed to answer the demand fora direct over-land route to connect the railroad with his holdings inFort Benton. So in May of 1882 he organized the Billings - BentonStage Company. It was the first north-south line to carry mail oncoaches.About midway on the stage line there was a river that cut itsage-old course through the trees and tall grass meadows of thewide Musselshell Valley.Where there was a good ford, he chose anideal site for a station, and said "With Clate Warner and other hiredhelp, we put up stage stables, mess house, a bunk house for the mento sleep in, a store, and of course my saloon. That was the biggestbusiness of them all." Even though he was appointed as the firstpostmaster, he made the rounds of the stage line every month, butnone of the stations pleased him as much as the one on the southbank of the Musselshell, and in memory of a former sweetheart,Walter Burke named it Lavina. As the Musselshell Valley settled up thick in the summer of1882, the stage stop became known as Old Lavina and it was a hubof activity. The bell tolled for Old Lavina when the surveyors chose a newtown site a mile downstream in the wide bend of the Musselshellthat had been the old Indian campground. A few months later onFebruary 16, 1908, the first passenger train steamed past the oldstage stop and pulled up to the depot in what was now New Lavina.July 2007W i n g i n ’ W e s t !WD41
