Since its establishment in 2008, Australian Writers’ Week has expanded everyyear and is an important annual event in the Embassy’s program of bilateralcultural exchange and collaboration. With thedevelopment of an increasingly literate, connected global community, the ability toshare our stories across borders is more real than ever, and the economic contributionsof those who create works of the mind greater than ever and growing.Copyright Agency, through its Cultural Fund, has made a concerted effort to bringour members and their works to China as a country in our region of great importance.Along with Australian Writers’ Week in Beijing, we are very pleased to provide supportto a variety of other initiatives, including to the Australian children’s publishing sectorthrough Books Illustrated to bring some of the best Australian children’s books andauthors to China; and through support of Red Gate Gallery and the Australian Chinesegallery, 4A, to showcase some of the best Australian contemporary and Indigenousart in China.Our dialogue with China extends beyond Cultural Fund activities to ongoingcommunication about collective management of copyright and its role in the creativeindustries. In December last year Copyright Agency welcomed a seven person Chinesedelegation headed by Ms Duan Yuping, Deputy Director-General of the NationalCopyright Administration of China. Another key delegate was Mr Zhang Hongbo,Director General of CWWCS, our sister collective copyright management organisationin China which is in the process of becoming operational. This visit provided theopportunity for Copyright Agency to share our expertise and experience gathered overmore than three decades in running collective copyright licensing and to demonstratethat a comparable statutory scheme for collective management of literary and visualarts works can be run in China to benefit both creators and consumers of content.The Copyright Agency Cultural Fund supports many activities, including those thatassist in developing trade in Australian visual arts and publishing.
