imperial status. <strong>Vijayanagara</strong> existed in a complex network <strong>of</strong> competingempires and states that vied for terri<strong>to</strong>rial and political power acrossPeninsular India. <strong>The</strong>se included the Islamic Bahmani Sultanates in theDeccan and the Hindu rulers <strong>of</strong> Orissa in the East.
