them, and he said to the king: You cannot kill me until you do what I ask you todo. And he said: What is that? He said: You should gather people in a plain andhang me by the trunk (of a tree). Then take hold of an arrow from the quiverand say: In the name of Allah, the Lord of the worlds, then shoot an arrow and ifyou do that then you would be able to kill me. The king called the people in anopen plain and tied the boy to the trunk of a tree, then he took hold of an arrowfrom his quiver and then placed the arrow in the bow and then said: In theName of Allah, the Lord of the young boy; he then shot an arrow and it bit histemple. He (the boy) placed his hands upon the temple where the arrow had bithim and he died and the people said: We affirm our faith in the Lord of thisyoung man, we affirm our faith in the Lord of this young man, we affirm ourfaith in the Lord of this young man. The courtiers came to the king and it wassaid to him: Do you see that Allah has actually done what you aimed at averting.They (the people) have affirmed their faith in the Lord. The king commandedditches to be dug at certain points in the path. When these ditches were dug,and the fire was lit in them it was said (to the people): He who would not turnback from his (the boy's) religion would be thrown in the fire or it would be saidto them to jump in it. (The people courted death but did not renounce religion)till a woman came with her child and she felt hesitant in jumping into the fireand the child said to her: 0 mother, endure (this ordeal) for it is the Truth."(Transmitted by Imam Ahmed, Imam Muslim and An-Nasa'i from the Hadith ofHammad Ibn Salamah).Some scholars claimed that the incident of the ditch was recurred orrepeated in the past more than once. Ibn Abu Hatim said: I was told by myfather after Abul Yaman after Safwan Ibn 'Abdur Rahman Ibn Jubair as saying:the incident of the ditch took place in the Yemen during the lifetime of Tubba'.And, it took place in Constantinople during the lifetime of Constantine who setthe fires in which he threw the Christians who were sticking to the religion ofJesus (Islamic Monotheism). It also took place in Iraq, in the land of Babylonduring the lifetime of Bikhtinassar who erected an idol and ordered the people toprostrate themselves before it. Daniel, 'Izrya and Mashayl refused andthereupon, he set a great fire and threw them into it. However, Allah Almightysaved them from the fire and caused the nine men who transgressed over themto fell into the fire they themselves made.Concerning Allah's Statement that reads: {Cursed were the people of theDitch}, As-Sadiy said: There were three ditches: one in Sham (Syria), anotherin Iraq, and the third in the Yemen. In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful(18)Barsisa the Worshipper(The Renegade)Allah the Almighty says in His Glorious Qur'an:{(Their allies deceived them) like Shaitan (Satan), when he says toman: "Disbelieve in Allah." But when (man) disbelieves in Allah,Shaitan (Satan) says: "I am free of you, I fear Allah, the Lord of the`Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists)!" So the end of both will bethat they will be in the Fire, abiding therein. Such is the recompense ofthe Zalimun (i.e. polytheists, wrongdoers, disbelievers in Allah and inHis Oneness)}. Satan came to him and said: Kill the woman andthen bury her for you are a reputable and highly respected man (i.e. don't riskyour own reputation for such a simple woman). The monk killed her and thenburied her. Thereupon, Satan visited her four brothers in a dream while theywere asleep and said to them: the monk committed adultery with your sister,and because she got pregnant, he killed her and buried her in such-and-suchlocation. In the morning, one of them said: "By Allah! Last night I dreamt ofsomething and I do not know whether to relate it to you or just keep it tomyself?" They said: Relate it to us. He did so and one of them said: By Allah! Isaw the same dream. Another said the same. And the fourth one said the samething.
