The report concluded: Travelers Rest remains a highly local market geared particularly towards local residents. Local traffic will continue to be the “bread and butter” for local businesses. Fortunately, this alone represents a strong and growing market for Travelers Rest. “Visitor” traffic represents a very low proportion of 14 overall traffic. Several businesses however are showing stronger performance than others with visitor traffic. These businesses are reaching out to what they perceive as a greater future market. Customers who reside inside the Travelers Rest zip code but outside of the City of Travelers Rest are still shopping in downtown stores just as much as customers who also reside inside the city. This equalization in customer traffic indicates that Travelers Rest is a powerful market in all of Northern Greenville County.
Clearly, the City of Travelers Rest has the capacity for a larger market area. Business owners must think regionally if Travelers Rest is to be thought of as an economic center. While certain obstacles exist, such as competition from Greenville and natural barriers, there still is potential for expansion. The greatest potential is to the north where there are fewer natural boundaries and there is less competition. There is also great potential, as the economic assessment indicates, to serve nearby Furman University and North Greenville University. Travelers Rest is no different. While the district faces challenges from other nearby commercial areas, there are many things that the downtown area, along U.S. 276 can offer that many other cannot. The potential is there for a walkable, dense urban district, complete with specialty shops. The goals and objectives listed at the end of this chapter could go a long way in achieving this, making Travelers Rest a destination with a more regional market. With proximity to the mountains and lakes, Travelers Rest has several unique retail opportunities, as Sunrift Adventures has done. In addition to the U.S. 276 corridor, State Park Road has become an office, financial, and government corridor. Conclusion As this element shows, there are a number of opportunities and challenges
